Abstract

Abstract: This reserach aimed at finding out the most common problems in writing experienced by the third year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. This research is a descriptive quantitative with survey and the population of the survey is 110 third year students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. A questionnaire was used to collect the data to find out most common problems in writing of the students. The questionnaire contained 21 statements and divided into 2 groups: internal problems (Organization, Spelling, Grammar and Capitalization) and external problems (Learners’motivation, teachers feedback and inadequate time) with 9 items. The questionnaire was accessed online via google forms. Every statement in questionnaire used 5 point Likert-Scale start from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The result showed the most problem in writing experienced in internal problem is spelling problem with 229.3 average points. The other problems are: organization problem with 217.3 average points, grammar problem with 213.6 average points and the last is capitalization 195 average points . The most problems in external problem is inadequate time with 246 average points. The other problems learners’ motivation with 243.3 average points and teachers’ feedback with 218 average points.Key Words: Survey, Writing, Writing problems.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed at finding out whether there is significant effect of using TPS (Think –Pair- Share) technique on the students ability of the first year students of Madrasah Aliyah Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru in comprehending narrative texts. The design of the research is pre-experimental. The population and sample are the first grade student of Madrsah Aliyah Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. The number of sample is selected by using cluster random sampling technique. To get the data, the researcher conducted a pre-test and a post-test, then the results are analyzed using quantitative data calculated by SPSS 16 version. The result of sig. value is 0.000. It can be stated that 0.000 < 0.005. Then, the result of t-test is 14. 82, meanwhile t-table is 1.701. The t-test is higher than the t-table. It means that Hypothesis is accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect of using TPS (Think-Pair-Share) technique on the students ability of the first year students of Madrasah Aliyah Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru in comprehending narrative texts.Key words: TPS(Thnik-Pair-Share), technique, reading comprehension, narrative text.

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research used One-Group PretestPosttest design to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of using Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) strategy on the ability of the second year students of SMPN 1 Siak Kecil in comprehending recount texts. The sample of the research was 27 students of class VIII-2 and obtained by using cluster random sampling technique. The data collected by giving a pre-test to see the student’s reading ability in comprehending recount texts before the treatment and continued by giving a post-test after the treatment. Then, the results of the tests were compared. The result of the data analysis showed that mean score of the pre-test was 65.22 and the mean score of the post-test was 75.51. In other words, the mean score of the post-test is higher than the pre-test, that is as this as 10.29. The value of t-obs was higher than t-table (12.108 > 2.055) at significant level of 5%. It can be concluded that Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Hence, there was a significant effect of Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) strategy on the ability of the second year students of SMPN 1 Siak Kecil in comprehending recount texts. The implication of the findings was that students’ reading ability could be improved through the application of STAD strategy. The strategy could also help students to be confident and active in reading classroom activities.Key Words: Effect, Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) Strategy, Recount Texts.

Abstract

Abstract : This research aimed to know the grammatical errors made by the third years of SMAN 1 Pekanbaru the academic year 2018/2019 in writing recount text. Descriptive method was employed in this research with both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The selected sample was XII MIA 5 students which consisted of 28 students. The sample was selected by using random sampling technique. The research findings provided the most common types of errors made by the students was error of selection with the number of errors was 323 or 78,00%. Moreover, it was followed by error of omission with the number of errors was 48 or 11,60%, and errors in addition and ordering fewer than 6%. Error of additon with the number of errors was 24 or 5,80% errors and errors of misordering with the number of errors was 19 or 4.60%. The errors performed by the students of SMA 1 Pekanbaru were caused by the influence of the first language and the second languageKeywords: Error Analysis, SMAN 1 Pekanbaru, Omission, Addition, Misordering, Selection.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimes to find out whether there is a significant effect of using Question – Answer Relationship strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMK N 1 Minas in comprehending recount texts. The research design is a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test dessign. The sample was X TITL (Teknik Instalasi Tenaga Listrik) chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The result of the data analysis show that the scores of the pre-test was 64.37 and the mean score of the post-test was 71.77. In other words, the mean scores of the post-test is higher than the pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-obs is higher than t-table (8.351 > 2.043). It can be concluded that the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Hence, there is a significant effect of Question – Answer Relationship strategy on the ability of the first year students of smk n 1 minas in comprehending recount texts.Key Words: Effect, Question – Answer Relationship, Reading Comprehension, Recount Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to find out whether the use of CIRC method could improve the writing ability of the second year students of MTs Al Fajar Pekanbaru. This research used classroom action research design and collected the data by using test and observsation sheets. Test used to measure the students’ progress in every cycle during the classroom action research. This test consisted of pre-test and post-test. Observation sheets used to observe the teacher’s and students' activities in the classroom. There were 25 students as participants. The level of achievement in this research was 75, based on the standard minimum criteria of achievement of English subject in MTs Al Fajar Pekanbaru. The research finding showed that the implementation of applying CIRC method as the teaching method could improve students’ writing ability at the first and second cycle. Based on the data analysis, the students’ scores improved from 63,47 in pre-test to 78,61 in post-test. Thus, the implementation of CIRC method could improve students’ writing ability of the second year students of MTs Al Fajar Pekanbaru.Keywords: CIRC Method, Writing Ability, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: The objectives of this research are to find empirical evidence of grammatical errors made by the second year students of English Study Program of Universitas Riau in writing descriptive essay and to find the sources that caused the errors. This is quantitative research with descriptive approach. Using cluster sampling, 25 students of class B were taken as the sample of this research. The data were collected throug writing test. The students were given blank papers contained a direction to write a descriptive essay with the topic “Describing Idol”. In analizing the data, several terminologies which deal with Error Analysis Technique were adopted such as identification, description, explanation, and evaluation of errors. Based on the process of identification and description, it was found that the students committed 498 errors that classified into four types of error which belong to Surface Strategy Taxonomy, they are: omission (25%), addition (22%), misformation (48%), and misordering (5%). Not only types of error to identify, this research also tried to explain the sources that caused the errors, which are: interlingual transfer (58%), intralingual transfer (33%), communication strategy (7%), and context of learning (2%). In addition, the errors made by the students were reconstructed into the correct form as the evaluation. Furthermore, in order to be good in using grammar in writing, several recommendations were given to the students such as doing more writing excercises and extensive reading, due to a complex productive skill which need more practice and more time to produce a good writing. In line with it, teachers need to provide interesting techniques with clearer explanation both in writing and grammar subjects and to follow up their writing to prevent the errors occur in the future.Key Words: Grammar, Error, Error Analysis, Writing, Descriptive Essay

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aimed to find out the ability level of the second year students of MA Darul Quran in writing descriptive texts. The subjects of this study were the second year students of MA Darul Quran who were selected by using the cluster random sampling technique. 32 students employed in this study was used the Writing Test adapted by Brown in 2003. The results of the data analysis showed that the mean score of the students` ability in writing the descriptive text was 56. It can be stated that the ability of the second year students of MA Darul Quran in writing descriptive texts was average. Based on the result of the students’ ability in each writing aspect, the lowest score was in the grammar aspect and the highest score is in the content aspect.Key Words: Study, Writing Ability, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: The main objective of this descriptive research was to find out about students’ ability in comprehending English texts. The sample of this research was the second year students of SMAN 2 Bangkinang. There were 52 students participating as the sample of this research.Tthe instrument of the research was a set of multiple choice test which consist of 48 questions regarding the reading components and The data were quantitative. The data were analyzed by calculating the score of the students in answering the test and classifying them to a certain level of ability using Harris formula. The results were that out of 52 students, no one student (0%) in excellent level of ability, 16 students (30.77%) were in good level of ability, 17 students (32.69%) were in average level of ability, and for the most part, 19 students (36.54%) were in poor level of ability. In addition, the average score of the students in comprehending English texts was 51.80. It meant that the students’ ability in comprehending English texts was in the average level of ability. The most difficult aspect is the students’ ability in finding inference with mean score 42.9 was in poor level of ability. This research recommended the students to to do more practice in reading three kinds of text (Narrative, Report and analytical exposition texts) in order to comprehend texts. Further research can focus on studying each subtopic in details. Other researchers can also focus on how to overcome the high level of difficulties in comprehending English texts, particular in finding inferences.Keywords: Ability, Comprehending, English texts

Abstract

Abstract : This study aims to find out the effect of discovery learning on reading comprehension of the first year students of SMAN 1 Pangkalan Kerinci in descriptive text.The data were collected in July to August. The population of this research is the first year students of SMAN 1 Pangkalan Kerinci. The number of sample is 35 students who are chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. This research is a pre experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design. The instrument to collect the data was multiple choice tests with 25 questions. The result of the data analysis showed that the mean score of pre-test is 64,8 while in post-test is 73. 05. It showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test. Hence, there is a significant effect effect of discovery learning on reading comprehension of the first year students of SMAN 1 Pangkalan Kerinci in descriptive text.Keywords: Pre Experimental, Discovery Laerning, Reading Comprehension, Senior High School, First Year Students.
