Abstract

This study aims to analyze the maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), especially Structural Firefighting Suits (SFS), in an effort to maximize its lifespan at Kualanamu International Airport, Deli Serdang. Structural firefighting suits are essential protective equipment for Aviation Accident Rescue and Fire Fighting (PKP-PK) officers, which serve to protect personnel from the dangers of extreme temperatures and fire while on duty. However, suboptimal maintenance can lead to a decrease in the quality of protection and shorten the life of the equipment. This study identifies the various factors that influence the deterioration of suits, as well as the efforts that can be made to extend their lifespan, including the challenges faced in the maintenance process. Based on interviews with PKP-PK personnel and direct observation, it was found that factors causing damage include exposure to extreme temperatures, chemical contamination, and storage that is not in accordance with applicable standards. Efforts to extend the service life of suits include proper storage, regular cleaning with appropriate cleaning agents, and rotation of use to reduce wear and tear. In addition, the main challenges faced include budget constraints, inadequate storage facilities, and lack of systematic training for personnel. This study recommends the implementation of more standardized maintenance procedures, the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), as well as periodic training for personnel to extend the life of Structural Firefighting Suits and improve operational safety at Kualanamu International Airport. This study highlights the importance of standardized PPE maintenance as a critical step in strengthening occupational safety for aviation rescue and fire fighting operations.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the performance of firefighting foam stored in the ARFF warehouse at Kualanamu International Airport. Foam is the primary extinguishing agent used in airport firefighting operations, especially for incidents involving flammable liquids. A decline in foam quality can directly affect firefighting effectiveness. This research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing data collection techniques such as observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that major factors contributing to foam degradation include unstable room temperatures, direct exposure to sunlight, and improper storage practices, such as mixing foam with other equipment. Additionally, budget constraints remain a key obstacle to constructing a dedicated foam storage facility. These results highlight the importance of proper foam storage in compliance with regulations and the need for adequate infrastructure to maintain foam effectiveness in emergency situations.

Abstract

A clear and well-structured organizational system is a crucial factor in ensuring the effectiveness of emergency services at airports. This study aims to: (i) identify the organizational structure of the Airport Rescue and Firefighting (PKP-PK) Unit at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport Makassar, (ii) assess its alignment with operational needs and emergency service standards, and (iii) evaluate personnel competencies in relation to national and international regulations. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation review regarding the structure and competencies of PKP-PK personnel. The findings indicate that the PKP-PK organizational structure at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport formally complies with existing regulations, both in terms of hierarchy and functional division. Each position, from unit head to operational staff, carries clear roles in supporting emergency operations. Nevertheless, several challenges were identified, including the limited number of certified personnel, insufficient succession planning, uneven training implementation, delays in equipment procurement, and the lack of joint simulation exercises with stakeholders. The study concludes that although the organizational structure already meets operational requirements, the effectiveness of its implementation still requires strengthening personnel competencies, improving training quality, and enhancing cross-sector coordination to ensure optimal emergency services.
