Abstract

Operational safety in the airside area of airports is a crucial aspect in ensuring smooth and secure flight operations. This study was conducted at Fatmawati Soekarno Airport in Bengkulu with the aim of identifying potential hazards in the apron area and assessing their risk levels using the Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) method. Through direct observation during the On the Job Training program, four safety-related findings were identified: non-compliance with PPE use by ground staff, presence of Foreign Object Debris (FOD), oil spillage on the apron, and aircraft refueling conducted simultaneously with passenger movement. The risk assessment revealed that three findings fell under the unacceptable risk category, while one required risk control. The study recommends mitigation measures based on the hierarchy of hazard control approach for each finding. These results highlight the importance of strengthening safety culture and continuous supervision in apron management to enhance the overall airport safety system

Abstract

The rapid growth of air transportation in Indonesia presents challenges to flight safety, particularly the recurring threat of bird strikes. Zainuddin Abdul Madjid International Airport Lombok (BIZAM), as the primary aviation hub in West Nusa Tenggara, frequently experiences such incidents due to its proximity to bird-attracting environments such as grasslands, rice fields, and water bodies. This study aims to analyze the causes of bird strikes and evaluate current mitigation strategies. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, involving direct field observation, interviews with airport safety personnel, and review of internal documents such as bird strike logs and safety reports. The research was conducted during the author’s On-the-Job Training (OJT) at BIZAM for five months in 2024. The findings revealed three documented bird strike incidents during the observation period, occurring near the runway and apron areas during take-off and landing phases. While current deterrent measures such as vehicle patrols and sirens are in use, they are largely ineffective in the long term. The absence of real-time monitoring systems, data integration, and inter-agency collaboration contributes to the vulnerability. This study recommends the implementation of habitat management, predictive data modeling, and radar-based detection tools to enhance flight safety and align with international aviation standards.

Abstract

Sultan Thaha Jambi Airport is located close to the city center, only two kilometers away, but there are still many forests around it. Due to its strategic but also vulnerable location, it is very common for wild animals to enter the airport area. The purpose of this study was to identify the causal factors and to find out how to handle wild animals at Sultan Thaha Airport. To overcome this problem, a Safety Risk & Quality Control Unit was formed whose task is to ensure the safety and quality of flights at this airport. This study was conducted by direct observation in the field, and collecting data from related documents. The results of this study concluded that the factors causing wildlife hazards at Sultan Thaha Jambi Airport come from internal conditions, such as infiltration ponds, tall grass, bushes, and trees that are habitats for wild animals. External factors include the existence of residential areas, rice fields, garbage dumps, ponds, fish ponds, and forests around the airport that attract wild animals. Internal handling is carried out through habitat management, such as installing fences and pruning vegetation, although it is still in the process of being repaired. External handling involves cooperation with BKSDA, PERBAKIN, authorities, and the community to evict, record, and regulate land use so as not to attract wild animals to the airport area.

Abstract

Kualanamu International Airport still relies on aeronautical revenue of 80%, while non-aeronautical contributions are only 20%. This condition requires diversification of revenue sources, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. This research aims to analyze strategies for utilizing vacant areas in Railink buildings to increase non-aeronautical revenue. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach through observation, interviews with commercial unit managers and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the value proposition canvas business model. The results showed that the vacant area is feasible to develop as a Commercial Lifestyle Hub that includes a children’s playground and event spaces. The potential contribution from this development is estimated to increase non-aeronautical revenue by 35-40% in five years. Key strategies include digital promotion, local collaboration and direct marketing. This optimization of non-productive assets not only strengthens the airport's financial stability, but also supports local economic growth and long-term competitiveness.
