Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant effect using Picture-Cued Storytelling Technique on the speaking ability of the third year students of SMPN 8 Pekanbaru. The research design was a re-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was class IX-3 chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. In order to collect the data, a pre-test and post-test were administered and then the data were statistically analyzed by using the t-test formula. The result showed that the mean score of the post-test was higher than the mean score of the pre-test (51.43>47.39). The value of t-test was 11.528 while the value of t-table in significance level 5% df = 32 was 2.037. Therefore, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Null Hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It could be concluded that there was a significant effect of using Picture-Cued Storytelling Technique on the speaking ability of the third year students of SMPN 8 Pekanbaru.Key Words: Picture-Cued Storytelling Technique, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Dewasa ini, media sosial menjadi hal yang penting dan tidak bisa lepas dari kehidupan sehari-hari. Salah satu media sosial yang dapat menunjang kegiatan pembelajaran di sekolah adalah aplikasi Instagram. Aplikasi ini dapat digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran karena dilengkapi dengan fitur-fitur yang memadai untuk hal tersebut. Pengabdian berupa kegiatan sosialisasi ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan dan pengalaman belajar kepada para guru dan peserta didik untuk memanfaatkan sosial media yaitu aplikasi Instagram di SMK Ibnu Taimiyah Pekanbaru. Hal ini dikarenakan masih banyak guru maupun peserta didik yang belum mampu memaksimalkan media Instagram ini menjadi media pembelajaran yang menarik. Pengabdian ini menggunakan metode evaluasi dengan cara survei langsung ke lokasi dan praktik secara langsung. Adapun untuk memaparkan hasil pengabdian ini digunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini dapat memberikan manfaat yang signifikan bagi peserta pelatihan, baik dalam meningkatkan pengetahuan mereka dalam menerapkan penggunaan aplikasi Instagram sebagai media pembelajaran ataupun dalam implementasi Instagram itu sendiri dalam proses pembelajaran. Peserta juga tentunya diharapkan dapat menerapkan pengetahuan yang diperoleh dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar.

Abstract

The technological development has influenced the educational aspect in supporting the teaching and learning process that can be run online. Online learning has been started commonly used for teaching English. This process is also facilitated by the existence of the online platforms. The teachers need to know the students’ preference towards the online platforms in order to achieve effective and efficient online learning. It has evolved into the indicator for evaluating the online learning for teaching English writing skills. Thus, the schools and the teachers can determine which online platforms are appropriate to use on the students. Thus, this research aimed to find out the students’ preference on online learning platforms for English writing skills in Senior High School 1 Bagan Sinembah. The criterions are language learning potential, meaning focus, learner fit, authenticity, positive impact and practicality. This is descriptive studies with detail analysis of students’ preference on online platforms like Zoom, E-learning, WhatsApp (WA) and Schoology. E-questionnaire was distributed to the students for collecting the data. E-learning obtained the highest percentage from natural science students with 74,0% and WhatsApp got the highest percentage from social science students with 68,3% as the suitable online platform for English writing skills for the students to learn and improve their writing skill when using the tools of those platforms. Therefore, it can be concluded that the students had different preferences in choosing the online platform for learning English writing skills. This preference leads us to believe that the online platforms can give the benefit of the students’ writing skill. It can be as the consideration for the teacher and decision-maker at school to choose the appropriate platform for students to be used.
