Abstract

This study examines how a nontheistic organization called The Satanic Temple (TST) fights for religious freedom for its members, particularly in abortion rights in the US. Ronald Inglehart’s secularization framework is employed to conduct a more in-depth analysis of this group’s efforts to voice religious freedom for its members, particularly on the abortion issue. Therefore, this study also provides an in-depth examination of TST’s strategies regarding the abortion issue. The finding shows that TST has far-reaching implications not only for their efforts against the new abortion law but also for the group’s presence amidst the religious majority environment of the US. Furthermore, another finding also reveals that TST’s efforts in legal proceedings have yet to be treated fairly. TST has a strong legal argument because TST members interpret their fundamental tenets and have an abortion ritual. However, solid legal opinions are not always sufficient. In response to legal challenges, judges have shown reluctance to evaluate Satanist claims on their merits, preferring to invent procedural criticisms. The ruling did not hinder TST as much as it prevented the problem.

Abstract

One of the most popular novels written for children is The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis (2005). However, this novel is controversial amongst critics because it contains religious symbols. This research argues that The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe has its way of presenting religious symbols implicitly therefore children can enjoy reading it. Thus, this research aims to examine the effective presentation of religious symbols in the novel. This research uses the Formalism approach. To support the analysis, the researcher uses library research as the method with the religious symbols found in the novel as the primary data and the books and journals written by experts as the secondary data. The result of this research is The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe presented religious symbols through the characters of children, role models, central subjects and important events of the story of the novel.

Abstract

As a singer and an actress, Demi Lovato has fame which can influence her fans globally. Further, with the mental health, addiction, and trauma issues, she gains positive changes in her life that affect and encourage her fans as well. The object of this study is Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil documentary series. This study reveals Lovato’s posttraumatic growth that influences her identity and global influence. The narratives, captured clips, posts, and previous research are used as the data in this study. This study uses the theory of posttraumatic growth and new media for data interpretation. The findings show that Lovato’s posttraumatic growth consists of five domains: personal strength, relations to others, new possibilities, appreciation of life, and spiritual and existential changes. Moreover, her posttraumatic growth also leads her to discover her identity as a non–binary person and bring positive impacts to her fans around the world and the non-binary community. Therefore, as a new media form, the Dancing with the Devil documentary series successfully delivers Lovato’s stories and struggles to people worldwide, especially her fans.

Abstract

The author frequently observed parents embroiled in a continuous argument regarding the appropriate religious upbringing of their children, which seem to be an ongoing and persistent disagreement to this day. The matter then inspired the researcher to find out more regarding the religious freedom for children, especially in the United States, as seen in the movie version of Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. In relation to the previous statement, this article formulates two objectives: (1) to present how the movie depicts the kinds of children’s freedom of religion, and (2) to discuss how the findings of the first objective contribute to the ongoing polemic in the United States. The postmodernism approach was applied, by using Lyotard’s theory, focusing on the diversity of experiences and the rejection of grand narrative as its starting point to unveil the fragmented freedom of religion for children in the US. The first results show that, according to the movie, two types of parents often engage in a debate: one who creates a religion-neutral environment and the other who creates a religion in a neutral environment. The second result shows that both types are valid. Unlike the freedom of religion for children, the freedom of religion of parents is, in a way, stronger than the rights of children. The powerful parental right is legitimate if parents do not break the border upon “the best interest of the children”. Parents are then allowed to impart or not to impart their religious beliefs towards their children.

Abstract

The United States has been a successful land of immigration since the late 1800s. The Arab immigration is a part of that fortunate history. This paper aims to represent Arab immigrants' identity through Diana Abu-Jaber’s Arabian Jazz (1993) by using the Postcolonial migrant. The story is about the Ramoud family, who have migrated from Jordan to the United States, and one of them confused identity. Jemorah, Matussem Ramoud's daughter, has “a double-consciousness” where physically she is like an Arab but not her cultural and attitude. She struggled with her identity because she was born in Jordan and grew up as a teenager in Euclid, the United States. Her aunties also insist that Jemorah get married to an Arabian because they want to preserve the heritage, Arab culture, and the family’s honor. Her condition is quite different from Melvina, Jemorah’s younger sister, in that she can adapt well to American culture. This novel also examines identity as a component of hybridity, especially in Jemorah and Melvina, as the main characters. This paper concludes that the second generation of Arab-Americans lost their identity, and it is quite different from the first generation, who preserve their Arab heritage, norms, tradition, values, and identity.

Abstract

As part of the postnational study, this study aims to identify the trauma Black Vietnam veterans suffered in the present time and their stance as Americans in Da 5 Bloods. Using a qualitative method in collecting the primary data from the conversation that happened in the film, as well as finding secondary data from books, journal articles, and the internet related to the study to support the analysis, this study also used historical trauma theory by LaCapra to help define the meaning behind the conversation and construct a more comprehensive view on the traumatic aspect in history. Based on the discussion, this study finds that Black Vietnam veterans are still most likely to suffer from PTSD in the present time because of their mistrust toward the VA and other Vietnamese despite being an ally. At the same time, the experience Black Vietnam veterans had from serving their country thus defines their perspective toward the government and the US as a whole because of how they were and are treated. In the end, the experience from the war made their stance against the war and its cruelty become crystal clear.
