Abstract

This study concerns the influence of sentence element awareness on the score of Grammar, Structure,and Written Expression (GSWE) in English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT). Some teaching methodsneed to be proposed to increase students’ awareness of sentence element. A class action methodwas used in this study, including planning, action, observation, and evaluation/reflection. For thispurpose, the study was conducted for 7 weeks involving the students taking Extensive English coursein the second semester of the academic year of 2013/2014. In the first week, the students were taughtEnglish simple sentence. In the next two weeks, students were taught English compound sentence.In the next two weeks, students were taught English complex sentences. In the last two weeks, theevaluation of GSWE was conducted. The results show that, first, the teaching method focusing onincreasing students’ awareness of English sentence elements was designed by comparing thoseelements to Indonesian sentence elements. Second, this teaching method design was able to increasestudents’ score of GSWE in ELPT, about 6.64%. Thus, teaching method focusing on increasingstudents’ awareness of English sentence elements can increase students’ score of GSWE in ELPT.Keywords: GSWE, sentence element, ELPT

Abstract

Perbedaan laki-laki dan perempuan dalam berbahasa selalu tampak terutama ketika mereka terlibat dalam percakapan. Bahwa laki-laki lebih sering mendominasi percakapan, dan perempuan lebih sering menggunakan bentuk Bahasa standar di suatu percakapan antara laki-laki dan perempuan merupakan hasil yang sering ditemukan dalam fitur bahasa yang digunakan oleh laki-laki dan perempuan. Selain ragam lisan, perbedaan penggunaan bahasa antara laki-laki dan perempuan juga bisa ditemukan di tulisan akademis mereka melalui fitur-fitur dalam penulisan akademis. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menunjukan perbedaan penggunaan bahasa antara laki-laki dan perempuan yang terlihat dalam penggunaan keterangan penguhubung di tulisan akademis mereka. Tulisan akademis dari lima belas mahasiswa laki-laki dan lima belas mahasiswa perempuan di Departemen Sastra Inggris, Universitas Airlangga dipilih secara acak untuk menjadi data untuk mendapatkan pola penggunaan keterangan penghubung. Tulisan akedemis yang didapatkan sebagai data merupakan hasil tulisan mahasiswa dikelas academic writing dan critical reading. Dari tulisan akademis yang sudah dibuat, ada perbedaan penggunaan keterengan penghubung kategori enumeration & addition, contrast/concession, apposition, dan summation di paragraf dan esai yang mahasiswa buat. Persentase frekuensi penggunaan jenis enumeration & addition tertinggi. Namun, presentase frekuensi penggunaan enumeration & addition di tulisan mahasiswa laki-laki lebih rendah daripada presentase frekuensi penggunaan enumeration & addition di tulisan mahasiswa perempuan. Hal ini berbeda dengan frekuensi keterangan penghubung transition yang tidak ditemukan sama sekali di tulisan akademik laki-laki dan perempuan

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi kesalahan siswa serta penggunaan umpan balik oral korektif guru dalam pengajaran keterampilan berbicara Bahasa Inggris di SDN Wonorejo 274 Surabaya. Kesalahan siswa diteliti untuk mengetahui gambaran kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh peserta didik dan penyebab terjadinya kesalahan-kesalahan tersebut sebagai rangkaian pemerolehan Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa kedua. Persepsi guru dan persepsi siswa terhadap umpan balik yang diberikan diangkat untuk mengetahui apabila sudut pandang guru dan siswa saling mendukung satu sama lain atau justru saling berkontradiksi. Teori analisis kesalahan dari Corder (1981) dan Luoma (2004) dan teori umpan balik korektif dari Lyster dan Ranta (1997) digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Melalui metode kualitatif, hasil penelitian menunjukkan (1) kesalahan siswa pada keterampilan berbicara Bahasa Inggris mereka banyak ditemukan di aspek kelancaran yang meliputi banyaknya jeda, pengulangan, kegagapan dan penggunaan fillers; (2) pada aspek akurasi, siswa-siswi SDN Wonorejo mengalami hambatan yang tercermin pada aspek omission, misaddition, misselection, misordering dan mispronunciation atau salah pengucapan; (3) kesalahan yang dibuat siswa dapat diargumentasikan berasal dari intervensi bahasa pertama dan belum sempurnanya penguasaan konsep dan aturan-aturan pada Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa sasaran; (4) Umpan balik eksplisit korektif merupakan satu-satunya tipe umpan balik yang digunakan guru karena guru menganggap tipe umpan balik ini paling efektif untuk meningkatkan akurasi dan kelancaran berbicara para peserta didik; (5) Baik siswa dan guru menganggap umpan balik korektif sebagai medium yang penting sebagai respons terhadap kesalahan yang dibuat dan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memperkaya pemahaman pada bidang pengajaran Bahasa Inggris dan pemerolehan bahasa kedua.

Abstract

Various culture in Indonesia is slowly being forgotten by the majority, for people now uses another way of communication to deliver the message from one person to another. One of the examples that could see is the usage of Javanese script or usually called Hanacaraka. Therefore, studying the visual language of shoe design from Flymax Indonesia case study will help the public to understand how urgent creative cultural product is. This research uses qualitative research regarding the case study based on the in-depth interview through the owner of Flymax Indonesia and visual language analysis regarding the visuals. This study has implications for the creative industry practitioners in conveying visual language and impacting methods in developing creative products by including cultural elements in popular products. From Flymax study case, implementing cultural to modern shoes is to strengthen cultural identity, user identity, and local brand identity, moreover supporting local economic growth and cultural preservation.

Abstract

Establishing sustainable waste management in healthcare industries is challenging as the social, economy, environmental dimension in the sustainability needs to be complied. However, prior studies have proposed indicators to build the sustainable waste management without addressing a systematic manner leading to bias and considering the environmental dimension to drive stakeholder’s behavior. This study aimed to determine how environmentally friendly behavior affects the sustainable waste management in the healthcare industries. There were 874 articles collected from the databases consisting of PubMed, Sciencedirect, Scopus, SAGE and Ebscohost after removing the duplicates and 8 articles claimed to meet the inclusion criteria. The environmentally friendly behavior is driven by stakeholders’ consciousness towards environmental practices, strong belief, awareness, knowledge and perception. The behavior needs to be reinforced by regulations and institutions and improved by training and education in order to develop the sustainable waste management. Theoretically, this study contributes to sustainable waste management by addressing more on environmentally friendly behaviors of all actors. In managerial implication, this study also offers considerations for firms on the areas which need to be improved to gain sustainable practices
