Abstract

The field of ESP teaching has undergone a revolutionary transformation with the integration of ICT tools and other authentic materials. These resources have proven to be invaluable to learners as they enable real-life interactions with native speakers. Various studies have explored the challenges faced by teachers and learners in ESP teaching situations. Therefore, this paper aims to describe the effectiveness of reading authentic materials toward the reading proficiency of psychology department students.   The study was conducted at the Psychology Department of Universitas Wijaya Putra. The students participated in 14 meetings, during which the experimental group was exposed to authentic reading materials and the control cluster received streamlined materials, a pre-test and post-test of the reading comprehension test were given to the students. The marks obtained were analyzed using SPPS and the students were given a set of tasks that included 50 multiple-choice questions and 10 essay questions. The research results revealed that the mean deviation score for the experimental group was 80, while it was 65 for the control group. Consequently. This provides evidence supporting the acceptance of the hypothesis, indicating an improvement in student performance after receiving the treatment. Specifically, the results revealed that exposure to authentic materials improved the reading proficiency of psychology department students

Abstract

This research analyzes Becky Kennedy's use of hedges and boosters in the TED Talk "The Single Most Important Parenting Strategy." The aim is to describe the types of hedges and boosters used by Kennedy and determine the most frequently occurring categories. A qualitative descriptive method was used with data collection through visual perception of the talk show. The steps of data collection included: 1) searching for and downloading the TED Talk and its transcript, 2) watching the talk show repeatedly, 3) converting the Word document into Txt format, and 3) importing the transcript into AntConc.exe. The analysis technique used was content analysis using the following steps: 1) examining the text containing the words hedges and boosters, 2) classifying the types of hedges and boosters, 3) presenting the data in tables, 4) analyzing using Hyland's (1998) theory, 5) drawing conclusions. The results showed that Kennedy tended to use words in the modal verb category in hedges and boosters and indicated the dominance of Kennedy's use of modal verbs in strengthening or doubting his arguments in the speech.

Abstract

This article aims to shed light on the compliment strategies employed by men and women towards Indonesian female politicians, using a netnographic approach to uncover implications of these interactions. By exploring the intersection of gender, communication, and politics, this study contributes to the ongoing discourse on gender equality and empowerment in the political sphere. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method. Data consists of comments from netizens on the Instagram posts of five Indonesian female political figures. Documentation techniques are used for data collection, while Content Analysis is employed to data analysis. The steps include: selecting political posts, extracting top-liked compliments, identifying types of compliments, categorizing compliments, presenting data, interpreting the, and drawing conclusions. The results show that the compliment types that the women receive from men are in the forms of evaluations or appreciations. While women tend to give admiration and request. The patriarchal system in Indonesia does not serve as a barrier for Indonesian women to actively participate in politics. Men will appreciate and respect women who demonstrate competence and good traits
