Abstract

English structure is one of the principal elements considered problematic by many students. Therefore, every teacher is always encouraged to use the effective teaching ways. One of the proposed ways in teaching English grammar is using media like humour stories. As suggested teaching media, humour stories require an examination. Therefore, this research attempts at finding out the effectiveness of humour stories to teach grammar and maintaining students’ learning motivation. The method employed was quasi-experimental research. The instruments used were a test, questionnaire, and field note. The participants of this study were two classes of English Language Teaching Department. The students learnt some grammar topics such as past simple, present perfect, passive voice of past tense, passive voice of present perfect, passive voice of present simple, passive voice of present continuous, passive voice of present future, relative clause, and noun clause. The results reveal that humour is an effective teaching media for grammar. The significance of 2-tailed (0.035) was lower than 0.05. There is a significant difference between control and experimental group. Furthermore, the result of the questionnaire shows that the usage of humour positively influenced the learners’ motivation. The observation results also reveal that the teaching atmosphere in the experimental class is getting better in each meeting.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to foster pupils' abilities in English pronunciation. Participants in this Classroom Action Research (CAR) were the students of sixth grade in MI Ma'arif NU Sunyalangu consisting of 20 students. Their English pronunciation abilities were still considered low because the pretest average score was only 48.86. The tools used were the test questions and the observation sheet. In order to enhance their English pronunciation skills, the researchers utilized the Phonics method. This method was chosen due to its merits in teaching English pronunciation. Two cycles of study were undertaken. The average score on the posttest for cycle 2 was 85.69, which was higher than the successful criteria of this study (65). In short, the phonics method could help pupils pronounce English more clearly, especially young learners.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out students’ difficulties in learning English. The method employed was a case study. The data was collected through interviews. The participants of this study were seven Thai students of the English Language Teaching Study Program of Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Purwokerto. The results revealed that in learning listening skills, the students faced difficult accents and a lack of vocabulary. Next, in reading skill, the students encountered two types of learning challenges called lack of vocabulary and difficult to comprehend the whole text. In learning speaking skills, the students had four types of difficulties namely unconfident and nervous, lack of vocabulary, difficulty with accent, and fluency. In mastering writing, Thai students had several problems called lack of vocabulary and difficulty understanding the grammar rules. Furthermore, the pupils had certain challenges when learning subskills. The pupils encountered the difficulty of remembering and comprehending the meaning when learning new words. Secondly, the students believed that understanding English grammar was difficult when they were studying it. Finally, the students faced challenges with the complex pronunciation system, Thai accent effect, and suprasegmental feature (stress) when learning pronunciation. In short, Thai students who learned English as a foreign language in a foreign country faced several types of learning difficulties.

Abstract

Comunication ability is one of the soft skills that is supposed to be mastered by youth in this modern era. This ability can be trained by doing lots of social activities at schools or community. Organisation for youth is one of the places that can be used to improve this communication ability. Communicating in English is now becoming important in all aspects, for example, education, business, health, technologies, etc. Therefore, being able to communicate in English is needed. However, many people still think that communicating in English is difficult. One of them is IPPNU Kedungbanteng members. They still found difficulties and felt unconfident to communicate in English. Therefore, storytelling training was done because this interesting method can be used to improve confidence in communication. The participants of the training were given material related to concept of storytelling and how to prepare storytelling. The result shows that the participants gave positive responses toward the training activities and storytelling
