Abstract

Objective: This research was aimed to analyze the mandibular cortical width based on a mental index (MI) and gonial Index (GI) in hypertension patients correlated with serum calcium and cortisol levels. Materials and Methods: This study was an analytic-observational study with 31 hypertension patients aged 41-79. All of the patients have checked their serum calcium and cortisol level. The panoramic radiograph was taken and analyzed using Image-J Fiji software. The mandibular cortical width was then measured with Mental Index (MI) and Gonial Index (GI) and correlated with the serum calcium and cortisol level. Results: The data obtained from examining serum calcium and cortisol levels and the measurement of Mental Index (MI) and Gonial Index (GI) showed varying results but tended towards normal values. The results of the correlation test between mental index and gonial index with cortisol and serum calcium showed no correlation with p>0.05. Conclusion: There was no correlation between serum calcium and cortisol level in the value of MI and GI in hypertension patients.

Abstract

Objectives: This case report is aimed to report the finding of canalis sinuosus on an impacted maxillary canine using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) examination. Case Report: A 21-year-old male was referred from orthodontic department to radiology department UNPAD Dental Hospital for CBCT to determine the treatment of malalignment asymptomatic maxillary canine. The case revealed the presence of canalis that was identified as a canalis sinuosus, a branch of the anterior superior alveolar nerve that rarely known by a practitioner, at the apex of impacted right maxillary canine. Conclusion: The information of this anatomical variation is important for professionals due to damage that may be caused during treatment. The use of advanced imaging examination is recommended to acknowledge the individual anatomical variation before determining the proper treatment planning.

Abstract

Objectives: This review aimed to understand the effect of exposure to panoramic radiographs on exfoliated buccal mucosal cells at the cellular level. Review: The dose of radiation exposure in dentistry, both intraoral and extraoral, has been regulated by The National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB). However, even though it is given in small doses, x-ray radiation due to intraoral and extraoral radiographs still has a radiobiological effect on the exposed tissue. The radiobiological effects of X-ray exposure can cause changes in biological molecules, either directly or indirectly, within hours or days. There are two classification of this radiobiological effect, called deterministic and stochastic effect. The deterministic effect occurs when the dose given exceeds the recommended dose by the NRPB, whereas the stochastic effect does not have any threshold that needs to be exceeded to give some adverse impact to the exposed tissue One method used as a predictor or biomarker of genetic damage due to exposure to physical or chemical mutagenic agents in humans is micronucleus (MN). The biomarker for the cell damaged is the change of nucleus shape and outline, called pycnosis, karyolysis, karyorrhexis. Conclusion: The exposed to x-ray from panoramic could induce cell and genetic damaged. Prescription for panoramic radiographic examination in patients should be as effectively as possible according to the principles of ALADA (as low as diagnostically acceptable) to avoid adverse effects on the exposed tissue.

Abstract

Objectives: This review aimed to understand the radiographic features of carotid artery atheroma on panoramic radiographs as an early diagnosis of atherosclerosis. Literature Review: Carotid artery calcification is caused by a plaque known as an atheroma. Atheroma is a plaque composed of lipids and rich in calcium. If atheroma formation in the carotid arteries increases, it would cause stenosis of the blood vessels and increase the risk of stroke. On panoramic radiographs, carotid artery atheroma appears as a heterogeneous radiopaque image with an irregular shape and well-defined borders. Radiopaque image located inferior to the angle of the mandible, close to the cervical spine (C3-C5) and above the hyoid bone. Conclusion: Incidental findings on panoramic radiograph could be an initial reference for further examination and evaluation of atherosclerosis.

Abstract

Abstract

Objectives: This case report aimed to report an extra root number of mandibular first molars that are mimicking benign cementoblastoma in the periapical radiograph and clarified using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) examination. Case Report: A 22-year-old female patient was referred from private clinic to Radiology Department of Universitas Padjadjaran Dental Hospital for a CBCT examination of the left mandibular first molar with benign cementoblastoma as the provisional diagnosis. Conclusion: It is necessary to consider CBCT examination in order to obtain accurate diagnosis of the presence of distolingual root.
