Abstract

This research is a quantitative research that uses a correlational method. The population and sample in this study were all students of class VII A SMP Negeri 9 Kota Bengkulu in the 2016/2017 school year, which amounted to 30 students. The results showed that the existence of critical reading skills in the ability to write arguments is classified as very strong (0,852), meaning that critical reading skills are very supportive of the ability to write arguments. Where the variable critical reading ability contributes to the variable ability to write arguments at 72,59%, and also shows that tcount is greater than t table or 8,623 > 1,701, meaning that there is a significant relationship between critical reading ability to the ability to write arguments.Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif yang menggunakan metode korelasional. Populasi dan sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas VII A SMP Negeri 9 Kota Bengkulu pada tahun pelajaran 2016/2017, yang berjumlah 30 orang siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keberadaan kemampuan membaca kritis terhadap kemampuan menulis argumentasi tergolong adalah sangat kuat (0,852), artinya kemampuan membaca kritis sangat mendukung terhadap keberadaan kemampuan menulis argumentasi. Di mana variabel kemampuan membaca kritis memberikan kontribusi terhadap variabel kemampuan menulis argumentasi sebesar 72,59%, dan juga terlihat bahwa t hitung lebih besar dari t tabel atau 8,623 > 1,701, artinya ada hubungan yang signifikan antara kemampuan membaca kritis terhadap kemampuan menulis argumentasi..

Abstract

This study aims to determine the form and meaning of Serwai Ethnic spell language in Tebat Sibun Village, Talo Kecil District, Seluma Regency. In this research, the writers used descriptive research method with qualitative research type. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that those study discusses two problems, namely (1) What is the form of the Serawai Ethnic spell language in Tebat Sibun Village, Talo Kecil District, Seluma Regency (2) What is the meaning of serawai Ethnic mantra language in Tebat Sibun Village, Talo Kecil District, as long as. The results of the first problem research, it is known that there are five existence of the spell language of Serawai Ethnic in Tebat Sibun Village, Talo Kecil District, Seluma Regency (a) experience of spell language which contains elements of treatment (b) experience of spell language which contains elements of self-protection (c) Existence of spell language containing agricultural elements (d) existence of spell language containing elements of attracting women/pellets (e) existence of spell language containing elements of eliminating hatred. The results of the second problem research, it is known that the meaning of the language of the Serawai Ethnic in Tebat Sibun Village, Talo Kecil District, Seluma Regency, there are five meanings (a) the meaning of healing spell language (b) the meaning of self-protective spell language (c) the meaning of agricultural spell language (d) the meaning of language female charm spells/pellets (e) meaning of hate-killing spells.

Abstract

This research was aimed to describe the intrinsic elements and the stereotypes of women found in the main characters of the novel Perempuan Bayangan by Netty Virgiantini. This research was designed by using a qualitative approach and content analysis method. In this research, the researchers implemented documentation techniques (literature study) in collecting the data of this research. Moreover, the interactive framework was used as the data analysis technique. The result of this research revealed that the intrinsic elements found in the novel included the theme (the eternity of love), characters, and the characterization. The characters and characterization consisted of the major characters, the supporting characters, and the shadow characters. The major characters were Ningrum, Satria and Padmi. The supporting characters were Ponco, Pandu, Pratiwi, Mrs. Sinta, Kokok, Tia, Satria’s mother and Ningrum’s mother. The shadow character was Utari. The setting of this novel included the Satria’s living room, pujahera, kitchen, boarding room, in the toast stall, restaurant, Ningrum's parents' house, office, sofa, the landlord's house. The setting of time included in the morning, evening, afternoon, and noon. The plot of the novel was chronological, and the points of views were first-person and third-person. The figure of speech included simile and oxymoron. Moreover, the moral values showed that one of the best ways in loving someone who died is by letting them go and praying for their peace in heaven, and never judge people at will by comparing them to the other ones as each person has its different strengths and weaknesses from each other. The woman’s stereotype found in the novel was that marriage was just based on personal benefits. The silence of women was considered as a sign of agreement on anything. Husband compared his wife to other women, and yelled at the wife whenever she was doing something.

Abstract

Language styles are commonly used in newspapers intended to interact the readers’ reading interest and comprehension towards the delivered information. The aim of this research was to describe the language styles including the meaning used in the daily newspapers of Radar Selatan March 2021 edition. This research was designed by using a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The research data was the news found in the daily newspapers of Radar Selatan March 2021 edition. The data was collected through observation and interview, and analyzed by using an analysis model proposed by Miles and Huberman. In this case, the researchers implemented triangulation techniques as the data validity technique of this research. The result of this research revealed that there were some types of language styles used in the daily newspapers of Radar Selatan March 2021 edition. The most dominant language styles found in the newspaper included: (1) metonymy, such as the use of some familiar and popular words used by the society, (2) parable, such as the use of parable to illustrate something based on the characteristics, (3) pars pro toto, (4) figurative language of association , (5) antanaclasis, (6) synecdoche, (7) epizeuxis, (8) eponymy, and (9) anaphora.
