Abstract

In patriarchal society, men are in a superior position than women. In this society men should be in charge and women should follow along, this causes women to be placed in a subordinate or inferior position. Patriarchy is important to discuss because Patriarchy is a socially-constructed system where males have primary power. It affects many aspects of life, from political leadership, business management, religious institutions, economic systems and property ownership, right down to the family home where men are considered to be the head of the household. The aims of the research are to analyze the reflection, the patriarchal systems portrayed and the effects of patriarchy on the victims in the novel. The literary work that is used in this research is Hanna Lynn’s Athena’s Child. This novel is based on the famous Greek mythology retelling of the story of Medusa. This research is conducted by using qualitative method and library research. The analysis is based on the theory of the Patriarchy’s by Allan G. Johnson and Sylvia Walby’s patriarchal structures. The research shows patriarchal system that occurs in the novel entitled Athena’s Child by Hanna Lynn and the effect to the victims.

Abstract

Ambar Andayani Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Surabaya diglossiafbs@gmail.com  Abstrak India Pancatantra adalah pola dasar dari Tantri Kamandaka Jawa kuno, Laos dan Siam Tantrai Tanthai. Penelitian ini bertujuan membandingkan antara Pancatantra dan Tantri Kamandaka yang berasal dari dua negara di benua yang sama, Asia, dan dari periode yang berbeda (200 SM dan 1200 ini). Studi sastra komparatif menunjukkan bahwa kedua karya ini menghasilkan warna lokal. Warna-warna lokal dianalisis dengan motif Thompson dan itu semiotik Riffaterre yang dilakukan oleh tingkat heuristik dan hermeneutik. Melalui aplikasi interpretasi dan sastra interdisipliner, simbol-simbol yang ditemukan dalam cerita rakyat dijelaskan. Perbandingan dari kedua dongeng mencapai makna otentik, memodifikasi "Sebuah Louse dan A Bug" di Indian Pancatantra Yoga dan "Louse A dan A Bug" di Tantri Kamandaka Jawa kuno yang menceritakan tentang Kaladesa. Akhirnya transformasi dari yoga ke kaladesa diselidiki dengan konsep akulturasi. kata kunci: sastra komparatif, motif, simbol, yoga   Abstract Indian Pancatantra is the archetype of Old Javanese Tantri Kamandaka, Laos Tantrai and Siam Tanthai. This research wants to compare between Pancatantra and Tantri Kamandaka which comes from two different countries in the same continent, Asia, and from different periods (200 BC and 1200’s). This comparative literary study shows that they produce local colors. These local colors are analyzed with Thompson’s motif and Riffaterre’s semiotic which is conducted by heuristic and hermeneutic levels. Through the applications of interpretation and interdisciplinary literature, the symbols found in the folktales are explained. The comparison of both fables achieves the authentic meanings, “A Louse and A Bug” in Indian Pancatantra modifies Yoga and “A Louse and A Bug” in Old Javanese Tantri Kamandaka tells about Kaladesa. Finally the transformation from yoga into kaladesa is investigated with the concept of acculturation. key words: comparative literature, motive, symbol, yoga

Abstract

This study discusses the class conflict that occurs in Samira Sedira’s People Like Them. The aim of this research is to describe the forms of class conflict and tells the factors that cause the class conflict find in the Samira Sedira’s People Like Them. The researcher chooses this novel because Sedira explores the issue of class conflict through two families who live in a village at the foot of the mountain. The researcher uses a qualitative descriptive method and a sociological approach to connect social conflict and literature. To analyze the conflict in the novel, the researcher uses Lewis Coser’s Class Conflict theory. Coser's theory emphasizes that class conflict can drive social change and maintain social structure by enabling tensions in society. The researcher finds two forms of class conflict, namely Realistic and Non-realistic conflict, and the factors that cause class conflict are Social and economic Enviousness, Cultural Differences and Assimilation, Exclusion and Racism, and the last one is Economic Injustice and Insecurity. This conflict is reflected in various aspects of their lives, including employment, housing, and daily social interactions. The study concludes that "People Like Them" not only highlights issues of class conflict in the specific context of the society depicted in the novel, but also offers broader insights into social dynamics relevant to Coser's theory of class conflict.Keywords: class conflict, cause of class conflict, non-realistic conflict, realistic conflict
