Abstract

Abstract. The focus of this research is the semantic aspect in the form of various implied meaning of the text of the state address of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during his reign of 2004-2008. In the perspective of critical discourse analysis, it can be shown five implied meanings as follows: to answer the demands of the public, garnering support from many circles, building optimism to the people, boost self-image in the public eye, and muffled criticism of the political opponent / rival. In his state address, it is discovered that SBY discredited his political rival groups impliedly. Key words: semantic, textual meanings, hidden meanings, critical discourse analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT.  Indian Pancatantra is the archetype of Old Javanese Tantri Kamandaka, Laos Tantrai and Siam Tanthai. This research wants to compare between Pancatantra and Tantri Kamandaka which comes from two different countries in the same continent, Asia, and from different periods (200 BC and 1200’s). This comparative literary study shows that they produce local colors. These local colors are analyzed with Thompson’s motif and Riffaterre’s semiotic which is conducted by heuristic and hermeneutic levels. Through the applications of interpretation and interdisciplinary literature, the symbols found in the folktales are explained. The comparison of both fables achieves the authentic meanings, “A Louse and A Bug” in Indian Pancatantra modifies Yoga and “A Louse and A Bug” in Old Javanese Tantri Kamandaka tells about Kaladesa. Finally the transformation from yoga into kaladesa is investigated with the concept of acculturation.Key words: comparative literature, motif, symbol, yoga, kaladesa

Abstract

Abstrak. Fokus pembahasan kajian ini adalah motif cerita fable-fabel Pancatantra menurut klasifikasi motif-index Thompson (1966). Pancatantra adalah rangkaian fabel di dalam cerita berbingkai, yang berisi ajaran moral dan etika bagi seluruh umat manusia. Tantra pertama “Perselisihan di antara Sahabat” pada Pancatantra terjalin dari 22 fabel berangkai tentang persahabatan dan konflik antarbinatang, sebagai metode dan materi mendidik Pendeta Visnu Sharma kepada tiga putra malas dan bodoh dari Raja Kerajaan Mahilaropyam, Amarshakti. Fabel-fabel tersebut mengandung beragam motif cerita, dari motif tentang pendeta mengajarkan kebijaksanaan kepada putra-putra raja pada fable ke-1, “Tiga Pangeran Yang Bego”, hingga motif tentang hewan yang memberitahu harta benda dan motif seseorang yang terbunuh karena memukul lalat di wajahnya pada fable ke-22, “Kera Bodoh dan Kisah Para Brahmana”.  Kata-kata kunci: story motif, fable, tale, framed story, moral value

Abstract

Abstrak. Dalam perspektif feminisme, novel Dadaisme karya Dewi Sartika (2004) menggugat dominasi lelaki sebagai kelas satu masyarakat maupun lelaki dalam dunia fiksi. Dari sudut pandang semua feminisme (liberal, radikal, marxist, sosialis), Dadaisme tetap sanggup menunjukkan gugatan dan perlawanannya terhadap dominasi lelaki dalam kanon sastra maupun dalam kehidupan konkret di masyarakat. Penolakan tersebut berwujud keberanian wanita untuk: pertama, berselingkuh membalas selingkuh kaum pria; kedua, menolak pernikahan; ketiga,  menolak dijadikan benda pelunas hutang. Tindakan penolakan pertama bernilai negatif (melemahkan perlawanan), sedang tindakan kedua dan ketiga positif (memperkokoh perlawanan). Kata kunci: kritik sastra feminis, patriarki, dominasi, subordinasi

Abstract

ABSTRACT. This study expresses reflection of Herman Melville’s point of view about multiculturalism in his novel, Moby Dick (1851). Five indicators of characteristic of multicultural literature applied as the base of this study are: varied and unique characters, admission of equality of all characters, authentic character’s social background, values of ancient treasure, and author as part of story. By expressive-hermeneutic approach, it can be concluded as followings. First, Moby Dick represents varied and unique characters. Second, Moby Dick represents admission of equality of all characters. Third, Moby Dick shows authentic social background of characters. Fourth, Moby Dick promotes values of ancient treasure, namely tradition and religion (Christian). Fifth, Moby Dick represents Melville’s involvement as part of story through character (Ishmael). Therefore, Moby Dick really represents multicultural values.Keywords: represent, multiculturalism, exspressive-hermeneutic approach, multicultural literature

Abstract

Abstract. This study is about Annie de Leeuw’s struggle for freedom in Johanna Reiss’ The Upstairs Room. Annie de Leeuw and her sister, Sini find themselves separated from their Jewish family during the Second World War. The Germans always look for them because they are Jews. Annie struggles to gain her free living like others by hiding in a Gentile family’s small room in upstairs for almost three years. Through the characterization of the main character, this study is analyzed intrinsicly. Apart from intrinsic approach, this study also applies extrinsic approach to strengthen the analysis. The extrinsic approach is needed since it also discussesthe concept of freedom.Annie de Leeuw gains her freedom when they are finally liberated by Canadian troops. Surviving in hiding for a very long time, Annie has almost lost the ability to walk. She gets her freedom in the end after facingmanyhard obstacles in her struggle. It is concluded that freedom is an essential need of human being that has to be struggled. Keywords: struggle for freedom, freedom, character

Abstract

There are two tendencies in comparative literary study. First, in comparative literary study, both of literatures from two countries are compared for certain points (theme, stylistic, setting, characterization, etc). Second, comparative literary study raises literary critical appreciation from other discipline perspectives (psychology, sociology, philosophy, religion, anthropology, politic). In this article, both tendencies are applied at once. The focus of this paper is about the theme in novels Harimau Harimau Muchtar Lubis and Moby Dick Herman Melville. It uses existentialism philosophical approach and criticism literature. The finding of the research, if we compare them, the existentialism theme in Harimau Harimau and Moby Dick has similarities that human being has freedom to determine her/his choice in her/his life for the future. Yet, what choice that she/he takes, it has a risk that she/he must face with responsibility as a human being. The pursuits of the responsibility caused anxiety, frightened, suffering as what the characters face in these novels. Abstract

From the perspective of Sartre’s existentialism, it can be concluded that Ahab is nothing else but what he makes of himself. Through what he does against that white whale, he gets his meaningful existence. Ahab exists only to the extent that he fulfills himself. Ahab gets happiness with his plan and act to kill his mighty woe. Furthermore Ahab’s decision at the same time creates an image of man that in general will do the same thing.

Abstract

Nyi Roro Kidul, Nyai Loro Kidul, or Nyai Ratu Kidul is a character of folk legend which has existed  all along south coast of Java land: from East Java, to Middle Java and Jogjakarta, then to West Java and Banten. People along the south coast of Java island believe to myth of this legendary character as a beautiful and supernatural woman who has authority of devil realm in Indonesian Ocean (Indian Ocen) or Segoro Kidul (South Sea). The popularity of Nyi Roro Kidul has also become motivation for national film-making and TV media to produce many films and drama about this character. Although there are many similarities about the revelation, among regions, legend and mass culture (film, TV); the representations of Nyi Roro Kidul show differences in theme emphasis.  In East Javanese people, Nyi Roro Kidul is emphasized on the intention of people seeking wealth pesugihan (with the helping from devils) by sacrificing human soul for antidote. In Middle Javanese people, Kanjeng Ratu Kidul is representated as the take turn-wife of Sultans from Mataram, Sultan Panembahan Senopati to Sultans of Jogjakarta in the present time. The west Javanese people represents this figure as the princess of Pakuan Pajajaran Kingdom who is betrayed and abused, and throw away herself to jump into South Sea, then she incarnates as a beautiful and undefeated supernatural queen. On film and television, Nyi Roro Kidul is presented as a beautiful, sexy, cruel and sexual adventurer woman.

Abstract

This research applies a literary anthropology approach that focuses the study on the uniqueness of Queqeeq character represented in Moby Dick (Mellvill, 1962). That uniqueness contains physical characteristics as a Polynesian, cultural behavior, belief, and dialect. Queqeeq character is described as a very sober man, consistent in his words and manners, and referring to Polynesid race, with large black eyes, natural dark skin, and unworldly tattoos. Quegeeq is represented as a character of a hard worker, agile, and tough as a seaman in the Pacific ocean. In religion, Queqeeq is described as a primitive ritual-religion person, who is serious in fasting; not to eat and talk in the Ramadan time, prays ritually through a wooden idol, following the ritual-religion custom of Polynesian. Generally, it can be concluded that Melville in Moby Dick (1962) succeeds in representing the specific characteristics of Polynesian culture through character and characterization of Queqeeq
