Abstrak. Simbolisme digunakan dalam berbagai tulisan seperti novel. Simbol merupakan bagian yang tak terpisahkan dari sebuah karya fiksi karena simbol memperkaya narasi dan menarik perhatian pembaca. Artikel  ini membahas simbol yang tersirat dalam kata mockingbird. Lewat analisa tema novel ini terungkaplah bahwa mockingbird menyimbolkan kebaikan dan kesucian, yang baik dan yang jahat, ketidaksetaraan social dan rasisme, dan keberanian. Abstract

Abstrak.  Artikel ini membahas karya Orhan Pamuk berjudul Snow dalam perspektif new historism. Yang menjadi bahan telaahan adalah kehidupan masyarakat Turki yang masuk dalam kelompok “liyan” sebagaimana tergambar dalam novel tersebut, khususnya yang menyakut hak-hak kaum perempuan. Umpanya, memakai penutup kepala merupakan pilihan bagi perempuan untuk mengekspresikan pilihannya. Bagi mereka yang memilih untuk memakai penutup kepala atas dasar imannya, seharusnya tidaklah tepat dimasukkan sebagai kelompok liyan. Kata kunci: hew historism, otherness, self-positioning

Abstract

Abstract. Menjadi seorang exile dan kerinduan akan tanah air adalah tema yang di-ekspose oleh dua penulis yaitu, Agam Wispi dan Leila S. Chudori. Karena alas an politik Agam Wispi harus meninggalkan negara asalnya yaitu Indonesia dan hidup sebagai seorang eksil. Kerinduan akan tanah airnya diungkapkan dalam puisinya yang berjudul Pulang. Novel Leila S. Chudori yang berjudul Pulang, juga bercerita tentangkehidupan seorang eksil yang bernama Dimas Suryo. Latar belakang Pulang dimulai pada tahun 1965 dan berakhir pada tahun 1998. Dimas Suryo, dan rekan-rekannya yang menghadiri konferensi wartawan di Santiago, Chili, pada saat terjadiperistiwa G 30 S tidak bias pulang karena paspor mereka dicabut dan mereka tidak bisa kembali ke Indonesia. Pindah dari Cile ke Kuba kemudian ke China, akhirnya berakhir menetap di Paris di mana mereka membuka restoran. Meskipun dipisahkan oleh jarak yang jauh dari tanah air mereka, kerinduan mereka untuk berhubungan dengan Indonesia adalah kunci dari novel tersebut.Tulisan ini mengeksplorasi hubungan intertekstual antara Pulang karya Agam Wispi dan Pulang karya Leila S.Chudori. Dengan menggunakan teoriinterteks yang diekspose oleh Roland Barthes dan Rifatterre, makalah ini berupaya untuk melihat bagaimana Pulang karyaAgam Wispi, seorang penulis eksil Indonesia, memiliki persamaan dan perbedaan dengan Pulang karya Leila S. Chudori, seorang penulis wanita Indonesia yang terkenal pada saat ini.Keywords: intertextuality, exiles

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the friendship of two women from two different generations in Afghanistan from the Soviet takeover in the 1980s until after 9/11. The Life of an Afghan Woman is depicted through two female characters who try to live a normal and peaceful life as anyone in the world wants. Dominated by a strong patriarchal culture in society and a life journey full of twists and turns, the characters of Mariam and Laila are strong women who face all kinds of suffering. Using feminist literary approach, the novel is scrutinized by applying close reading method. This research is a descriptive qualitative. Based on the analysis, the inferior position of women is a result of male domination in all aspects of life. It is concluded that women are oppressed economically, traditionally and ideologically. The oppression of women makes them have strong bonds and support each other to fight oppression by men.

Abstract

A  relationship    called  sisterhood   has  become  an  ordinary   thing  in society.  The  sisterhood   docs  not only  happen  to fellow  women  without  blood  tics but  also  occur   between   relationships    across   generations    of  which   parents   and children  live.  To examine  the occurrence   of sisterhood  relationships   by parents  and children,  the writer  decided  to do a study  on a novel  entitled   Belle Teal by Ann M. Martin.  Using  qualitative  method,  the data  are analysed  descriptively.   By applying feminist   literary  criticism   the writer  discusses   several  problem   statements   which include   the  sisterhood   that  occurs  across   generations   and  how  sisterhood   can  be exposed  to cross-generational    relationships.   From  the analysis,   it can  be concludedthat  sisterhood   can  occur  across-generation.    Mutual   caring,  intimacy   and  shared activity   can  enhance   and  expose   sisterhood   relationship   among   the  perpetrators. Sisterhood   also  has a positive   impact  that  can  make  a person  have  a more  godly thought  than before.

Abstract

This study discusses about Elio’s homosexuality in Andr? Aciman’s Call Me by Your Name. Elio is the main character in the novel. The study aims to answer three points: the cause of Elio’s homosexuality, the effect of Elio’s homosexuality and how homosexuality presented in the novel. The study uses qualitative research because it provides understanding into the problem and it derives meanings from the quotations. This study applies intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The extrinsic approach used is psychological approach as the literary approach. The psychological approach is applied in causes and effects of homosexuality as a psychological issue. The data source of this study is Call Me by Your Name novel by Andr? Aciman. The study found that Elio’s homosexuality is caused by Elio’s hormone and Elio’s family life. Elio’s desire and lust brings him to the wild imagination and fantasy. Elio’s parents are open-minded. It can be concluded that from the causes of Elio’s homosexuality brings him to the taboo thing and not every people can accept that sexual orientation. The novelist, Andr? Aciman wants to presented about the true feeling of the taboo love.

Abstract

Abstract. In this research, the writer discusses and analyzes the hierarchy of human needs of Don Tillman in a novel entitled The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. Don Tillman, the main character may have a perfect life but he has a trouble to fit in socially. This study uses the theory of the hierarchy of needs of Abraham Maslow. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data source used for the research is taken from the novel. Data collection is done by reading the novel, marking the data, grouping the data, and selecting the data. To analyze the data is done by analyzing and describing the data presented. This research shows that Don Tillman has fulfilled his five needs starting from physiological needs, safety, love and belonging, appreciation, and self-actualization. Even though there are obstacles in meeting these needs, especially the need for security and the need for love and belonging, Don Tillman is able to overcome them and successfully fulfill these needs.

Abstract

This article focuses on An American author of romance and adult fiction, Colleen Hoover shares her ideas about love and marriage in her novel “All Your Perfects", first published in 2018. It is a profound novel that explores the complexities of love and relationships in a way that is both insightful and thought-provoking about a damaged couple whose potential future hinges on promises made in the past. Colleen Hoover depicts how Graham and Quinn, as the main characters, fall in love and later how they face obstacles that threaten to tear them apart after seven years of marriage. The purpose of this study is to describe how consummate love is depicted in the novel “All Your Perfects” by Colleen Hoover and the effects of consummate love experienced by the main characters. The writer used a psychological approach to discover the styles of consummate love in Robert Stenberg’s Theory Triangular of Love in the novel “All Your Perfects”. The writer uses the novel as the main data and several journals and articles about romantic love, marriage, relationship, and the concept of triangular love by Robert J Sternberg as supporting data. According to Robert Sternberg’s Theory Triangular of Love, the result of this thesis is that both characters in the novel, Quinn and Graham, have experienced depicted and the effects of consummate love style with three components of a relationship: intimacy, passion, and commitment.

Abstract

This study examines the psychiatric symptoms called Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) experienced by Alicia Berenson in The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. This study aims to describe the symptoms and causes of Alicia Berenson, who experienced Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In this study, the writer applies a theory of the psychology of literature by Wellek and Warren and the theory of PTSD by Carlson & Ruzek. This study uses a psychological approach. The method used is descriptive qualitative. There are several PTSD symptoms found in Alicia’s characters, i.e., reliving the trauma through flashbacks, negative self-view, aggressive behavior toward oneself or others, impulsive behavior, social isolation, emotional regulation, and relationship difficulty. The causes of Alicia’s PTSD are a car accident at a young age, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, child abuse, and betrayal by her husband. It can be concluded that Alicia experienced PTSD, which later became complex PTSD due to repeated verbal abuse over a long period.
