Abstract

This study aims to find out the efficiency of grain dryers using a chimney and a fan as suction air from the collector into the drying chamber. The research was conducted at the Central of Laboratory Department of Mechanical Engineering Faculty of Engineering, University of Muslim Indonesia, Makassar. A dryer was made from a zinc plate of 0.2 mm as collector by using a hot-air and solar energy as a drying medium. It was expected that this tool can dry grain quickly with evenly distributed drying level or water content. There were five variations of the Chimney : 20 cm, 50 cm, 80 cm, 110 cm and 140 cm with the grain thickness of 7 cm, 5 cm and 3 cm. The data were then analyzed to obtained the efficiency of the dryer. The results reveal that the time required to lower the water content of the harvest grain from 24.6% to 13.6% - 13.85% of milled moisture was 4 hours - 6.5 hours with an efficiency of 34,232 % for grain thicknes 7 cm, 31,480 % for grain thicknes 5 cm and 30,122 for grain thicknes 3 cm at 80 cm chimney height.

Abstract

The research aimed at making jatropha waste and rise husk  briquet in various  compositions, determining the combustion characteristic, briquet heating value (HHV), determining briquet chemical characteristic, and coparing it with the use of carosine stove. The research method was an experiment in the Laboratory of Mechanical Engineering, Hasanuddin University and in the Laboratory of Mining Engineering, the office of Industry, South Sulawesi Province. The result of jatropha waste briquet are in the forms of hollow cylinder in six samples. The weight of each smaple of the raw material is 1,000 grams with the concentration of 0%-50% of the mixed composition of the jatropha waste and paddy chaff waste. The result of the research reveals that the briquet with the chaff 0% composition has the highest time, temperature, and heat value. The result  of the research at the time of the real briquet burning by using the briquet stove indicates that the addition of chaff (%) composition has the impact on the decrease of the briquet burning time, and the maximal temperature obtained. The laboratory research result reveals that the addtion of chaff (%) composition has the impact on the decrease of the briquet heat value. The testing result of the chemical composition through an ultmateness analysis, the testing result of thermal characterisitic through a proximity analysis, and physical characterisitic, generally fulfily\] in the existing briquet standard (commersial briquet standard reference, import, Japan, USA).  The testing result of the comparison with the paraffing stove indicates that the use of briquet is more economical Rp.500.- than the use of the paraffin to boil 1 litre water. Keywords : briquette, rice husk, jatropha

Abstract

The most important component in the refrigerator is the refrigerant. The refrigerant absorbs heat from one side and throw it to another side through the mechanism of evaporation and condensation. This research aims to develop a refrigeration machine using different refrigerants that can be observed with the performance of the compressor, evaporator performance and COP, and hoped this research can show the installation as a medium of learning in applying the working principle of refrigerator. The research method was experimental at setting 8 refrigeration machine with data collection for the pressure and temperature of R-12 and R-134a were measured at the compressor inlet and outlet for 300 minutes. Determining the value of the enthalpy at any point by using REFPROP program. The use of different refrigerants in a refrigeration machine indicates that the refrigerant R-134a better than R-12. It can be seen after 300 minutes for R-134a, compressor performance 29.4 kJ / kg, the performance of the evaporator is 144.5 kJ / kg, COP 4.9 while for R-12 compressor performance 21.8 kJ / kg, the performance of the evaporator is 12.3 kJ / kg, COP 4.6.

Abstract

The refrigeration system used to meet the needs of human life can be in the form of a thermoelectric cooler (TEC). Due to its small volume, environmental friendliness and several other advantages, TEC can be widely applied such as in fish cooler box. In this study, the cooler box used had dimensions of 290mm x 205mm x 254mm and were given twelve stacked 3 TEC modules with varied DC voltages. The purpose of this study is to determine the voltage that can provide the best TEC performance. This performance will be indicated by the Coefficient of Performance (COP) value of each voltage variation. The experimental results show that the best performance of the TEC is at 42 Volts. The lowest temperature achieved during the experiment was 7.74℃ on the cold-side.

Abstract

Biomass briquette stove is a cooking tool that is still widely used by the people of the interior of South Sulawesi. Even in urban areas, it is not uncommon to find their use because of the ease of obtaining briquettes and its relatively good efficiency. This study aims to determine the best performance of a biomass stove from three types of clay material stove shapes in different configurations of geothermal variations. The three variations of the geometric shape of the stove are cylindrical, rectangular and hexagonal using biomass material from coconut shell charcoal in the shape of a honeycomb with an inner diameter of 15 mm and an outer diameter of 65 mm and a height of 45 mm. The uniqueness of this stove is the addition of a sleeve diameter of 180mm in the stove's combustion chamber as heat insulation so that the combustion process in the combustion chamber can be more perfect. The test results show that the presence of a flat surface on the stove wall will accelerate heat loss compared to the cylindrical surface. This is in line with the results which show that the highest rate of heat loss occurs in a rectangular shape, then a six-square shape, and the last is a cylindrical shape. Furthermore, it can be concluded that the cylindrical stove is the superior of the two in terms of flame temperature, ability to boil water and thermal efficiency of 798°C, 30 liters and 73.66%, respectively.

Abstract

The intensity of solar energy is an important factor in viewing the performance of the thermoelectric generator (TEG). Most studies only look at the effect of treatment on the TEG module in the form of cooling mode and its materials. Therefore this study examines the effect of the solar intensity value on the magnitude of the module voltage. On the hot side of the module are placed heat absorber plates of copper, Fe and aluminum plates as well as non collector plates. Modules are cascaded and connected in series as many as 14 modules per plate, so that a total of 56 TEG modules are used. Data collection is carried out simultaneously on all plates. The test results show that the increase in solar intensity is liner with the magnitude of the TEG module voltage or in other words the correlation is positive. The data also shows that copper collector plates produce the highest voltage difference, followed by Ferro, Alumina and no-plates at ∆V 0.871, 0.805; 0.369 and 0.153 V, respectively
