Abstract

Abstrak: Makna Leksikal dalam Sistem Kala Past Tense Bahasa Inggris dan Teknik Penerjemahan ke dalam Bahasa Indonesia pada Buku Biografi Suharto: A Political Biography Karya R.E Elson. Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengungkap makna leksikal dalam sistem kala (past tense) bahasa Inggris Tujuan penelitian ini, yaitu untuk mengidentifikasi, mendeskripsikan dan mengkaji makna leksikal dalam sistem kala (past tense) bahasa Inggris dan teknikpenerjemahan yang digunakan ke dalam bahasa Indonesia pada buku biografi Suharto; A Political Biography karya R.E Elson.Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian adalah pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan metode analisis isi. Sumber data penelitian adalah buku Biografi Suharto; Sebuah Biografi Politik karya R.E Elson. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa makna leksikal Bahasa Inggris menggunakan aturan yang ketat dalam penggunaaan kalimat past tense, sementara Bahasa Indonesia tidak memiliki sistem yang ketat dalam pembentukan makna kalimat kala. Selain itu penggunaan teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan meliputi teknik penerjemahan harfiah 24 data (52%), teknik modulasi 8 data (17%), teknik adaptasi 3 data (6,5%), teknik peubahan, teknik penghilangan, kesepadanan lazim dan teknik transposisi terdapat 4 data (8,6%).

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of the Memrise application on the speaking skills of eleventh-grade students at SMAN 03 Kota Bengkulu. The study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test–post-test control group design. The sample consisted of 77 eleventh-grade students, including 38 students in the experimental class and 39 students in the control class. The experimental class was taught using the Memrise application, while the control class received conventional instruction. The research instrument was a speaking test administered as both a pre-test and a post-test. Students' speaking performances were assessed by two raters using the same scoring rubric. The collected data were analyzed using validity and reliability tests, normality and homogeneity tests, the Independent Samples t-Test, and the F-Test using SPSS. The findings indicated that the data from both groups were normally distributed and homogeneous. The Independent Samples t-Test showed a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.010, which was lower than the significance level of 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference between the post-test scores of the experimental and control groups. Furthermore, the F-Test yielded a significance value of 0.010 with an F-value of 6.973, confirming that the Memrise application had a significant positive effect on students' speaking skills. The Partial Eta Squared value of 0.085 indicated that the treatment explained 8.5% of the variance in students' speaking achievement. Therefore, the Memrise application can be considered an effective learning medium for improving students' English-speaking skills.

Abstract

This study aimed to improve the vocabulary memorization of fifth-grade students at SDN 071 Bengkulu Utara through the use of The Loud House cartoon as an audio-visual learning medium. The study was motivated by students' low ability to memorize English vocabulary, as indicated by difficulties in understanding word meanings, recalling previously learned vocabulary, and low learning motivation due to the use of less engaging teaching methods. This research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) adapted from the model proposed by Arikunto, Suhardjono, and Supardi (2010), consisting of two cycles: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The participants were 19 fifth-grade students of SDN 071 Bengkulu Utara. Data were collected through vocabulary tests, classroom observations, and documentation, and were analyzed descriptively by comparing the results of each cycle. The findings revealed that the implementation of The Loud House cartoon effectively improved students' vocabulary memorization. The students' mean score increased from 64.21 in Cycle I to 79.79 in Cycle II, showing an improvement of 15.58 points. In addition, 16 out of 19 students (84.21%) successfully achieved the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM) of 75. Classroom observations also indicated that students became more active, enthusiastic, and confident during the learning process. Therefore, the use of The Loud House cartoon is an effective alternative audio-visual learning medium for improving English vocabulary memorization among elementary school students.
