Abstract

Abstract

This article aims to map the polarization in Indonesia between Christian Education (or: Christian Religious Education) as it takes place within the domains of church and of school. Within the ecclesial arena, Christian education (Pendidikan Kristiani/PK) is often associated with the activity of teaching children. On the other hand, within the setting of a school, PK is often associated with a course of study assigned to students—one that mostly emphasizes the filling of cognitive gaps for the students yet (intentionally) ignores the affective and psychomotor domain that is integral for instruction. By examining this polarization, I argue that the polarizing divide between PK as implemented in a school and PK as implemented in the church can be overcome by virtue of the fact that both school and church are learning spaces for PK. This article is divided into three parts. The first will demonstrate certain misunderstandings about PK in the context of school and of church that lead to polarization. The second part shows how PK is presently practiced in the context of Indonesia’s churches and schools. Based on descriptions in this second part, the final section will offer a number of basic principles, in an effort to bridge the gap between PK as it takes place in school and in church.

Abstract

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the life of the church in Indonesia, including the design of Christian education organized by the church. The pandemic, in which digital technology develops rapidly and massively, urges the church to rethink the concept and purpose of Christian education to demonstrate its critical, adaptable, and creative dimensions. Based on a literature study of the various dynamics and changes that occur in the area of Christian education during the COVID-19 pandemic, this research proposes the three fundamental transformative efforts for the churches in Indonesia to design their concept and elaborate their purposes of Christian education, focusing on strengthening relationships among people, changing ways of thinking and learning (teaching), and socializing with digital media.

Abstract

This article discusses the risks of (religious) radicalism infiltrating formal education in Indonesia, particularly in middle and high schools. The value clarification approach popularized by Louis Rahts, Sidney B. Simon, Leland W. Howe, and Howard Kirschenbaum is used in this article to examine this problem by showing that educational design, which is dominated by indoctrinating model, opens up a place for radicalism to grow faster since it does not open an adequate space for students to question and discuss the values, they have learned in the learning process. This article argues that the value clarification approach helps teachers and students choose appropriate learning models to create an adequate space for students to understand, talk, and consider the values they are learning. In order to prevent the student from and minimize radicalism in school, then, in the end, based on the value clarification model, this article offers the three tasks of preventing students from radicalism, which are sharpening intelligence, sharpening the sense and sensitivity, and improving the way we are working with others.

Abstract

Learning methods for teenagers in the church are often equated with learning methods for children. If it is differentiated, it is a kind of modification of the teaching model of children. The teachers are not treating teenagers according to their abilities and needs. Based on the context of the teenagers at GMIT Kalvari, Maumere, this research wants to reveal the extent to which the learning methods used so far are friendly or unfriendly to the teenager group of Generation Z. The research method used is qualitative research using structured interviews to the groups of teacher and teenager and review on the teaching material document "Derap Remaja" that is used in 2022. By using the theory of learning models of Sara Little and generation theory of Gen Z foranalyze the context, results show that teenager-friendly learning is an urgent need because one-way teaching patterns are still strong enough to dominate the teenager learning model at GMIT Kalvari. Therefore, this paper proposes three principles and practical aspects related to the teenager learning methods, which are responsive and dialogical methods that go beyond the monologue one, the active involvement of teenagers in the learning process, and learning process that encourage the teenager to do something in their real life

Abstract

Abstract. This article is an effort to reconstruct ecclesiology by discussing the value of silaturahmi from an Islamic perspective and the Gandong system in Maluku culture with the help of Choan Seng Song's womb theology as the theological lens. This effort was motivated by the 1999 conflict on Haruku Island which began with the conflict on Ambon Island which had damaged the fraternal relations between Christians and Muslims on Haruku Island. Meanwhile, traditional ecclesiology, because it emphasizes the superiority of the church, often makes conflicts even sharper. The results of this study show that both silaturahmi and Gandong emphasize fraternarly love which is addressed both internally and externally. These two elements are also conceived in Jesus' messianic movement, thus making it to be a relevant ecclesiology for the solution to the conflict that occurred.

Abstract

Attention given to children from the womb plays a vital role in supporting their physical and character development. The Karo tribe has a seven-month pregnancy tradition called ngembah manuk mbur, which aims to provide care and attention to pregnant mothers and their unborn children. However, this tradition remains limited in terms of fulfilling the rights of unborn children. Therefore, this study aims to reinterpret such tradition in the light of a biblical-theological context and within the framework of a Child-Friendly Church that it can serve as a foundation for child-friendly Christian education in the context of Karo community. The study employs a qualitative method with a literature review to explore the concept of the ngembah manuk mbur tradition and the concept of a Child-Friendly Church. These concepts serve as analytical tools to examine the implementation of such tradition. The findings indicate that reconstructing the tradition based on biblical-pedagogical principles and within the framework of a Child-Friendly Church can transform it into a foundation for child-friendly education within the Karo community. Traditionally, ngembah manuk mbur is conducted to strengthen pregnant mothers and is only performed for first-born children. This study proposes three key reconstructions of the tradition: it should be performed for all children, it should be carried out throughout the mother's pregnancy, and it should serve as a way for all family members to welcome the child into the family.

Abstract

This article focuses on the narratives of children, members of the Pasundan Christian Church in Dayeuhkolot, who were victims of religious radicalism. These children have experienced certain acts of violence, such as verbal and physical violence, that have affected their lives, specifically their minds and behavior toward others who are different from them. As a result, these children did not have enough space to express and discuss what they had experienced. In this research, we have conducted interviews with three children to get the narratives about their experiences of intolerance and violence. At the same time, we do a literature review to explore the concept of theologizing with children. The results show that children's experiences of violence influence their theological perspective and understanding of God, others, and their relationships with others. By adopting the making meaning model proposed by Tanya Marie Eustace Campen, we argue that the four stages of this model, namely engage, recognize, claim, and respond, can be used as a model of doing theology with (victimized) children.
