Facing the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0 in which technology has become the daily basis of human life, English has become inevitably significant. In fact, it is really needed in the health sector, especially medical laboratory technology which adopted advanced technology, and thus requires the medical technologist to be able to accomplish human to human and human to machine interactions. This study aimed to identify the language proficiency of students of medical laboratory technology. The population of this study was the students of Akademi Kesehatan John Paul II Pekanbaru. The instrument used in this study is test. The results indicated that the overall performance was still categorized in the lowest level (A2) with the scores ranging from 337 to 443. In the first two sections, listening comprehension and structure and written expression, most of the students’ proficiency was classified in the lowest level (A2) with the scores ranging from 38-49 and 33-43 respectively. In the last section, reading comprehension, all students’ proficiency was classified in the lowest level (A2) with the scores ranging from 31-47. In conclusion, students’ language proficiency was still categorized in the basic level or waystage

Industrial revolution 4.0 provided greater opportunities for digital technologies. Therefore, English is essentially needed especially in health sciences since it serves as language of instruction in guidelines published by WHO, recent updates in research journals, and the like. Consequently, English had been a compulsory subject in institutions of higher learning. In medical laboratory technology, English is needed to be applicable in comprehension of laboratory equipment manuals. The purpose of this study was to analyze common errors in translation of laboratory equipment manuals in an ESP class. This was a descriptive quantitative study. Data were obtained from assessment of 34 translation works performed by students in an ESP class. This study used authentic materials. There were four common problems identified in this study, word-choice problems, grammatical problems, pragmatic problems, and cultural issue. Grammatical problems became the cases with highest occurrence ranging from 82.35 – 97.6% among the errors found in the translation performed by the students.

Collocation is one of the aspects affecting vocabulary mastery. However, the knowledge which the students had in collocation was not in line with theunderstanding and use of the single words. Therefore, they had difficulties in using and choosing the appropriate words in different contexts of communication. In order to know the contribution of collocation to the students‟ vocabulary mastery, a test of collocation and a test of vocabulary mastery which included collocation as part of it were applied as the instruments of the research. The sample of the research was selected by applying cluster random sampling. This study proved that the collocation contributes significantly to the student‟s vocabulary mastery. Therefore, collocation and vocabulary mastery could not be treated separately in vocabulary learning and teaching.

Despite the fact that English is adopted as compulsory subject in higher education and extended period of learning, students still have low proficiency level. Thus, studies on students’ proficiency level need to be conducted for an effectively designed classroom activities. The purpose of this study was to assess students’ speaking skills to obtain a comprehensive review. The population of this study was students of Akademi Kesehatan John Paul II Pekanbaru. The instrument of this study was rubric assessment with four aspects assessed: grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation. The average speaking performance was 2.25 in satisfactory level. The lowest result was grammar with the average score of 2.56 in satisfactory category, whereas the highest result was pronunciation, 3.08, good category. The results of vocabulary and fluency were 2.79 and 2.82 in satisfactory level. In conclusion, students’ speaking performances were still in satisfactory level. Improvements were needed in grammar, vocabulary and fluency

Mikroalga sebagai organisme fotosintetis mengandung biomassa yang telah dieksplorasi untuk menghasilkan bahan bakar alternatif dalam bentuk biodiesel dan bioetanol. Selain itu, biomassa mikroalga ternyata masih menyisakan produk lain yang belum dieksplorasi secara optimal yaitu biopigmen. Salah satu jenis mikroalga yang didominasi oleh klorofil serta kerotenoid yaitu Chlorella sp. Penelitian ini fokus pada pemanfaatan biopigmen mikroalga Chlorella sp. dibidang kesehatan khususnya kemampuan sebagai antibakteri alami terhadap bakteri patogen Staphylococcus aureus. Mikroalga Chlorella sp. ditumbuhkan dalam medium Walne dan dipanen menggunakan metode sentrifugasi. Mikroalga Chlorella sp. diekstrak menggunakan pelarut heksan:aseton (7:3) dan dimurnikan biopigmennya dengan kolom kromatografi. Biopigmen yang diperoleh, diuji aktivitas antibakterinya dengan metode Kirby-Bauer. Hasil penelitian diperoleh kerapatan sel mikroalga Chlorella sp. sebesar 16,54×106 sel/mL. Ekstrak kasar mikroalga Chlorella sp. berwarna hijau tua. Hasil pemurnian dengan kolom kromatografi diperoleh jenis biopigmen karotenoid pada panjang gelombang 380–400 nm dan klorofil pada panjang gelombang 450 nm dan 620 nm. Aktivitas antibakteri terhadap S. aureus yang dihasilkan oleh ekstrak kasar sebesar 9±0,104 mm, karotenoid sebesar 11,6±0,038 mm dan kloramfenikol 9,4±0,102 mm.

English for Specific Purposes merupakan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris secara khusus pada bidang tertentu. Kemampuan ESP ini sangat dibutuhkan karena aplikasi penerjemah instan yang tersedia secara luas belum dapat menerjemahkan terminology secara tepat. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan pelatihan ini bermanfaat untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris siswa SMKN 1 Tualang sesuai dengan bidangnya. Pelaksanaan Kegiatan ini dilakukan dengan 2 tahapan yaitu kegiatan pembelajaran untuk meningkatkan kompetensi siswa dan kegiatan praktik di laboratorium menggunakan materi autentik untuk memberikan pengalaman belajar bagi para siswa. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian diharapkan dapat meningkatkan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris para siswa yang bersifat aplikatif.

In the digital era, English is essentially needed for communication. Therefore, English for Specific Purposes is required, especially in vocational program. The ESP class is designed to prepare the students to be able to use English related to their field of study. However, learning resources in medical laboratory technology are difficult to find. the purpose of this study is to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery in ESP classes through the use of authentic materials, Classroom Action Research was conducted in two cycles at Akademi Kesehatan John Paul II Pekanbaru. The samples of the study were the students taking ESP classes. The results of the study indicated the improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery. The students obtained the average score of 41.52, 54.39, and 72.98 in the pre-research, cycle 1, and cycle 2 respectively. The students also perceived that the use of authentic materials had been successfully brought the real language in medical laboratory into the classroom. In conclusion, the use of authentic materials could improve the students’ vocabulary in the ESP class and create learning experience

Compared to the four language skills, listening is the first language skill acquired by a language learner. Nevertheless, Students frequently had low performance in listening. They also had a notion that listening can be hardly acquired. Thus, new methods need to applied in listening activities, one of them is using YouTube. This study is classroom action research conducted in two cycles. The subjects of this study were 49 students of Akademi Kesehatan John Paul II Pekanbaru. Tests and Interviews were carried out to collect data. In cycle 1, the students’ score increased from 50 to 65.10. In cycle 2, the students obtained the average score of 71.02. In conclusion, the use of YouTube in listening activities can improve students’ listening skills. The result of interview revealed that students are more interested in learning English through YouTube. They can learn pronunciation and how to express ideas the same way native speakers did.

Era revolusi industry 4.0 membuat Bahasa Inggris menjadi salah satu kualifikasi yang sangat dibutuhkan. Untuk dapat mahir berbahasa Inggris, ada 4 kemampuan berbahasaS yang harus dikuasai, yaitu listening, speaking, reading, dan writing. Dengan demikian, listening harusnya menjadi kemampuan pertama yang harus dikuasai dalam belajar Bahasa asing. Tujuan dari kegiatan pelatihan ini untuk memperkenalkan pembelajaran listening berbasis online learning sekaligus mendampingi siswa dalam pembelajaran sebagai fasilitator pembelajaran untuk terbukanya diskusi tentang pembelajaran Bahasa dengan menggunakan authentic material dari online sources mencakup topik sehari-hari. Kegiatan ini terlaksana dengan efektif dan bermanfaat bagi para siswa berdasarkan hasil kuesioner umpan balik.
