Abstract

Meanings are related to language functions. To comprehend how the meanings of a word are various, conducting componential analysis is necessary to do. A word can share similar features to their synonymous words. To reach the previous goal, componential analysis enables us to find out how words are used in their contexts and what features those words are made up. “Shoes” is a word which has many synonyms as this kind of outfit has developed in terms of its shape, which is obviously seen. From the observation done in this research, there are 26 kinds of shoes with 36 distinctive features. The types of shoes found are boots, brogues, cleats, clogs, espadrilles, flip-flops, galoshes, heels, kamiks, loafers, Mary Janes, moccasins, mules, oxfords, pumps, rollerblades, sandals, skates, slides, sling-backs, slippers, sneakers, swim fins, valenki, waders and wedge. The distinctive features of the word “shoes” are based on the heels, heels shape, gender, the types of the toes, the occasions to wear the footwear, the place to wear the footwear, the material, the accessories of the footwear, the model of the back of the shoes and the cut of the shoes.Keywords: shoes, meanings, features

Abstract

This research aims to describe the types of address terms used by the main character in Jane Austen’s EMMA and  to reveal the main character’s purposes in using types of address terms. Further, this study employs descriptive-qualitative method. The result of the research can be concluded as follows. First, there are 8 types of address terms. They are (a) title plus last name, (b) first name, (c) full name, (d) pet name, (e) kinship terms, (f) title plus full name, (g) occupational terms, and (h) title alone. The most frequent use of address terms is title plus last name since it is used to respect the addressees. Second, there are 6 purposes of address terms. They are (a) to show politeness, (b) to show intimacy, (c) to show social status, (d) to keep inferiority, (e) to show friendship, and (f) to show solidarity. From the study, the writer found that the address terms are mostly used in purpose to be polite to the addressees.   DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v2i2.2747

Abstract

Students and lecturers often communicate, both in formal and semi-formal situations. Good communication between students and lecturers remains within the limits of politeness even though it is not in a formal situation. The existence of social media certainly facilitates communication between students and lecturers. This research aims to describe and analyze the politeness of language in short messages from students to lecturers through the WhatsApp application at Universitas 'Aisyiyah Yogyakarta (UNISA). This research employed a qualitative research. The data from this study were 105 conversations between lecturers and students through the WhatsApp messaging application. The analysis in this research was carried out to determine 1) obedience and violation to the tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim and sympathy maxim, 2) forms of language politeness, that are positive face and negative face, and 3) function of language politeness that are representative, directives, expressive, commisive and declaratives. The results showed that most of students used polite language in their text messages and used formal language which contained complete politeness expressions such as greetings, self-introductions, apologies at the beginning and/or at the end of text messages, intention in sending messages, thank you –note and closing. Most of the text employs positive face. Students’ text messages mostly function as representative and directives.  DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v4i2.4926

Abstract

Humor can be found in both spoken and written language, which is an imitation of spoken language. Comic books are one type of written source of humor. Asterix at the Olympic Games is one of comic which contains humor. The purpose of this paper is to determine how linguistic context and non-linguistic context produce humor in the comic Asterix at the Olympic Games. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The study's findings revealed that speech acts and maxims violations were linguistic contexts that contributed to the production of humor. Character expression and illustration, on the other hand, contributed to the production of humor in a non-linguistic context.

Abstract

Pendidikan anak usia tentunya melibatkan banyak aspek. Salah satunya adalah literasi dini. Literasi dini bukan berarti mengajarkan anak untuk membaca, namun bagaimana membangun agar anak-anak cinta membaca. Literasi dini dapat mengasah kemampuan mereka untuk berbicara dan menulis. Namun sayangnya tidak semua anak saat ini suka membaca. Tidak adanya buku bacaan dirumah menyumbang rendahnya literasi pada anak usia dini. Terlebih lagi di zaman modern seperti saat ini dimana smartphone merajalela dimana-mana, tentunya semakin membuat anak-anak jauh dari buku. Melihat fakta tersebut, maka membuat sudut baca atau pojok literasi, bisa menjadi salah satu solusi untuk meningkatkan minat baca anak usia dini. Pada saat ini, sudah mulai banyak sekolah yang mengadakan program pojok literasi karena program ini sangat efektif untuk menumbuhkan minat baca pada siswanya. Namun demikian, tidak semua sekolah mampu menyediakan pojok literasi ini. Ada banyak hal yang menghambat terciptanya pojok literasi, salah satunya adalah ketersediaan dana. TK ABA Sragan adalah salah satu taman pendidikan usia dini yang ada di Minggir, Sleman, Yogyakarta. TK ABA Sragan belum memiliki cukup sumber baca yang mampu meningkatkan minat baca siswanya. Berangkat dari hal tersebut, maka diperlukan usaha untuk meningkatkan minat baca siswa TK ABA Sragan. Salah satunya adalah dengan menyediakan pojok literasi di TK ABA Sragan dan mengadakan kegiatan read aloud. Pojok literasi ditata lebih baik dengan menambah koleksi buku, sedangkan kegiatan read aloud dilakukan agar meningkatkan bonding dengan anak-anak sehingga anak-anak semakin tertarik untuk membaca buku

Abstract

Banyaknya permasalahan yang ada di remaja adalah kurang optimalnya peran keluarga dalam pendidikan pertama dan proses pengasuhan. Proses pengasuhan dititik beratkan pada ibu saja dan Peran ayah di masyarakat baru sebatas pencari nafkah dan kebutuhan perkembangan anak. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui gambaran peran ayah dalam pengasuhan. Jenis Penelitian ini adalah Observasional dengan rancangan cross sectional dengan pendekatan kuantitatif. Sampel yang digunakan adalah 100 responden dengan teknik total sampling. Data dinalisis menggunakan analisis univariat dan bivariat dengan menggunaakan Chi-Squere. Hasil yang didapatkan adalah ayah cukup berperan dalam kegiatan pengasuhan pada anak, walaupun mayoritas ayah berstatus bekerja. Hasil uji statistik disebutkan peran ayah berhubungan dengan adanya kehadiran ayah. Untuk itu diharapakan ayah bisa selalu hadir di rumah setelah aktivitas bekerja sehingga dapat membersamai istri dalam proses pengasuhan
