Abstract

Abstrak. Artikelinimelaporkan  hasil penelitian tentang jati diri melalui asimilasi budaya yang tergambar dalam  novel LeRoi Jones yang berjudul Dutchman. Penelitian ini bertujuanuntukmenganalisis asimilasibudaya orang kulithitamdalamrangkapencarianjatidiri. Rancangan penelitian adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan objek penelitian adalah tokoh utama dalam karya sastra tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Clay sebagaitookhutamasangatberambisiuntukberhasildikalangan orang kulitputih. Diamencarivalidasi agar dapatditerima di kalangan orang Amerikaberkulitputih.Diamengadopsibudaya orang kulitputihseperticaraberpakaian, pendidikandannilai-nilai yang dimilikioleh orang kulitputihdenganmenanggalkanjatidiri yang telahdiamiliki.  Kata kunci: self-identity, cultural assimilation

Abstract

Abstract. Penelitian ini menganalisa tentang rekonstruksi kehidupan pengarang di dalam drama Long Day’s Journey into Night karya Eugene O’Neill. Pendekatan teoretis yang digunakan adalah pendekatan historis-biografis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada beberapa fakta dalam kehidupan pengarang yang dibangun kembali kedalam fiksi seperti anggota keluarga, konflik ibu pengarang, dan konflik pengarang sendiri. Dari hasil analisis dapat disimpulkan bahwa Long Day’s Journey into Night merupakan drama biografidarisi pengarang, Eugene O’Neill. Penelitian ini diharapkan memperluas wawasan dan pemahaman tentang hubungan antara karya sastra dan pengarangnya. Keywords: (historical-) biographical approach, reconstruction of author’s life

Abstract

This study is about an analysis of Santiago's way to find happiness in Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist. Psychological approach and the help of psychological theory that are used in this study to identify the reasons of Santiago's strife to pursue happiness through his journey to Egypt. From the novel, Santiago's family life background is the main reason of his strife to find happiness. The result of the study, researcher finds some indicators of happiness according to Selingma's PERMA in Santiago's journey. Santiago meets relationship, meaning and accomplishments in the end of the journey. He meets the girl, Fatima, as the love of his life. He also finds the meaning of his life, which is to live without any regrets. then, he finally finds the hidden treasure as his dream. The three indicators help Santiago to be happier than before. From the analysis, it can be found that the reason why Santiago feels happier in life is because he never stops encouraging himself with the faith of his dream, the faith of his own destiny, and the faith of his mission in life.

Abstract

The study explores the patriarchal oppression on women reflected in Malala Youefzai and Christina Lamb’s I am Malala. The study aims to identify the forms, the cause, and the impact of the patriarchal oppression on women especially on the Pashtun women of the Swat Valley, Pakistan. The research designed used is a qualitative research. Meanwhile, the approach employed is psychological approach. The study shows that there are some forms of patriarchal oppression on women: cultural dominance, powerlessness, exploitation, violence and marginalization. The women are discriminated and mistreated in many ways. The patriarchal oppression on women is the result of the regime of General Zia’s government and also the rules set by the Taliban group. Pashtun women are marginalized. It is an excuse of keeping the Chasity and dignity that the civilization had changed. Culture and tradition play a role as the cause of patriarchal oppression on the Pashtun women where many families dictate a strong preference of sons over daughters. Meanwhile, there are two impact of patriarchal oppression on Pashtun women, physically and emotionally. Many women become illiterate, have no skills except doing housework and end up depending on men for their survival. They also suffer of excessive fear and anxiety and the worst impact is being killed.

Abstract

This Study is entitled An Analysis Racism in Angie Thomas Novel Concrete Rose. It aims to describe the forms of racism reflected in the novel and to describe Maverick struggle to fight against Racism. The study is designed as descriptive qualitative study since the object of the study and the result of analysis are presented in descriptive form. The approach used is sociological approach The sociological approach to literary works is one type of approach in the sociology of literature that is used to analyze the events, characterizations, and settings contained in the short stories that are read. Humans take actions intentionally to accomplish their goals, at the same time, human actions have unintended consequences (unintentional consequences) of setting that impact on subsequent human actions. Humans according to this theory are agents of purposeful actors who have reasons for their activities and are able to describe those reasons repeatedly. This study describes the main character who is trying to achieve his goals by dealing with racial conflicts that occur in his environment The author concludes that there are 2 types of racism in the novel Concrete Rose. The first is Prejudice. Prejudice is a prejudice or negative assessment of an object without knowing the truth first. Angie Thomas shows indirectly how prejudice occurs. Maverick's bad prejudice occurs because he is a black person. In America they have a bad reputation. The second is discrimination. Discrimination is an act that treats a person or group differently and unfairly on the basis of the characteristics of that person or group. Discrimination by police and paramedics against the main character is very, very detrimental and has a negative impact on the main character.

Abstract

This analysis about Rachel Lippincot’s novel entitled Five Feet Apart. The study focuses on what characteristics of the Young Adult Literature genre in the novel. The objective of the study aims to describe the characteristics of the Young Adult Literature genre found in the novel. The characteristics of Young Adult Literature relate to intrinsic elements of the novel which consist of character, theme, plot, and point of view. The approach used in analysing the novel is the structuralism approach. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method. The result of the analysis states that novel Five Feet Apart fulfils the qualifications of the characteristics of Young Adult Literature. The character of the novel have a physical appearance, the way they behave, and interact with each other. Such as Stella as the main character she have a characteristic of long eyelashes, sandy brown wavy hair, full lia ps, and thin body. While Will Newman as the second of the main character have a physical appearance that is a thin and tall body, deep blue eyes, and dark brown hair. Moreover, the characters in the novel have a change in attitude and way of thinking. As seen from the analysis, the plot in the novel have a faster and the storyline going in the present. Themes in the novel consist of some of themes that is Young Adult Literature and romance because the novel tells about the love story of the two people young adult suffering from lungs illness, that is Stella and Will. There are 2 point of view from the young adult protagonist person as the main character in the novel, in the first chapter begins with Stella point of view and the next chapter continuous by the point of view of Will Newman.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development of Nora’s character after the apparent death in Matt Haig’s the Midnight Library. The data of this study is taken from the words and dialogues in Matt Haig’s the Midnight Library that shows the characters and character development of the main character, Nora. The writer uses psychological approach and focuses on apparent death because she wants to analyze character development happens to Nora after apparent death. The result of the analysis, first the character of Nora easy to dispirited, negative thinking, pessimist, ungrateful, and always blame on herself for everything happens. the second is apparent death in Midnight Library influences Nora’s character. The third, the writer finds the character development in Nora that she becomes happier, positive thinking, always grateful, optimistic, and always assumes everything that happens in life is a good lessons for life.

Abstract

Remaja memiliki masalah emosi yang berbeda-beda dan cara menyikapi permasalahan sesuai dengan karakteristik kepribadian masing-masing. Individu yang memiliki karakteristik introvert cenderung menyimpan setiap permasalahannya, sehingga menimbulkan berbagai dampak. Salah satu dampaknya adalah mengalami kecemasan, baik dalam bidang akademik maupun bidang lainnya. Praktikan membantu melakukan terapi dengan metode merajut bersama dengan klien. Teknik art therapy menggunakan media seni dan proses kreatif dalam sebuah proses penyembuhan. Hasil dari seni digunakan untuk mengeksplorasi perasaan, konflik emosi, meningkatkan kesadaran diri, mengontrol perilaku, mengembangkan kemampuan sosial, meningkatkan orientasi realitas, mengurangi kecemasan, dan meningkatkan penghargaan diri. Art therapy sangat membantu remaja mengatasi gangguan emosi, menyelesaikan konflik, menambah wawasan, mengurangi perilaku bermasalah, serta meningkatkan kebahagiaan hidup. Pelatihan psikoedukasi dengan metode merajut ini membantu menurunkan tingkat kecemasan dan juga membuat produktif remaja karang taruna Desa Ngrawan, Berbek, Nganjuk.

Abstract

This research tells about a character named Arthur where he suffers from bipolar episodes which require him to commit to the hospital and take medication, and also makes him tell his daughters to live their own lives, but there is anxiety experienced by him. Arthur told his daughter because there were some problems that happened at her daughter's school, and there were some problems that made her depressed, namely when he had a fight with his wife in the past and caused their family to fall apart due to divorce. and in this analysis it is also explained that the cause and effect of a bipolar episode where Arthur suffers from severe depression due to the problems he suffers that comes from his daughter.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa internasional telah mempengaruhi berbagai hal termasuk kurikulum sekolah di berbagai negara. Di Indonesia, bahasa Inggris dikategorikan sebagai bahasa asing dengan rentang waktu belajar yang pendek untuk pembelajaran di sekolah, dan tentunya setiap sekolah akan mempunyai kebijakan sendiri mengenai pembelajaran ini. Pada beberapa sekolah yang memberikan rentang waktu pendek sesuai kurikulum akan berusaha untuk menambah jam pembelajaran di luar jam pembelajaran di kelas. Hal ini diterapkan oleh Panti Asuhan Ad-Dakwah, Jalan Garuda 01, Sidoarjo, yang mengajukan permohonan bantuan kepada Prodi Sastra Inggris, FIB, Untag Surabaya untuk memberikan tambahan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris secara non-formal. Pembelajaran diberikan setiap Sabtu dengan materi pada tingkat dasar sesuai dengan tingkat sekolah peserta, termasuk pendampingan dalam mengerjakan tugas dari sekolah. Pelaksanaan dibantu oleh mahasiswa dengan tujuan agar jarak usia yang tidak terlalu jauh, sehingga peserta terhindar dari suasana kaku jika didampingi dosen. Dengan pembelajaran selama tiga bulan, kemampuan peserta menunjukkan peningkatan yang baik dalam keterampilan listening, speaking, reading, dan writing.
