Abstract

Presidential election debate attracts public attention toward general election. Through the presidential debate, euphemism is uttered by candidates, and it creates effect to other debaters. This paper is focused on examining effect (perlocutionary act)of euphemism in presidential election debate 2019. The corpus covers the utterances containing euphemism and their responses as the effect produced by the candidates in the prime presidential election debate 2019. The methods used in analyzing data were pragmatics identity method and referential method. The results show that the effect of using euphemism includes verbal perlocutionary act acceptance namely agreement and verbal perlocutionary act refusal includes contradiction, rebuttal, disagreement, denial and criticism. Verbal perlocutionary act acceptance is only expressed by a candidate from the same party as support. However, the verbal perlocutionary act of refusal is expressed by candidates respectively. It indicates that each candidate has different ideology and communication strategy.

Abstract

When delivering a speech or talk, a speaker shares a great deal of background knowledge to the audience. However, as human being, the speaker often gets nervous and forgets the words to say. Sometimes the speaker is not able to memorize all information that s/he wants to present to the audience. In fact, during the talk, the speaker must speak fluently to maintain a good situation and communication to the audience. Therefore, to fill a gap during a talk because the speaker could not memorize every detail of information to be presented, using vague language sometimes becomes an option. Vague language may also be used for other purposes besides nervousness and memory problem, i.e. as a tension management (Trappes-Lomax, 2007). This research explores vague language as tension management device used by Jimmy Kimmel as the host in the Oscars opening monologue in 2017. The method used in this research was qualitative descriptive since it describes the data in the form of word or sentence. The results demonstrate that Jimmy Kimmel used vague language types such as conventional indirectness, category and quantity approximation, hedges, modal expressions, implicitness, euphemisms, softeners and down toners as tension management devices. Furthermore, vague language can function as hedges for Jimmy Kimmel’s statements when the information he presented is not precise.

Abstract

Program pelatihan dalam  pengabdian masyarakat in iharapkan dapat meningkatkan ketrampilan  bagi mahasiswa dan peserta yang akhirnya dapat menambah pendapatan dan pengisian waktu luang yang berdampak peningkatan secara ekonomi. Buah Rambutan banyak ditemukan di sekitar Tembalang dan wilayah Semarang dimana Sekolah Vokasi  Universitas Diponegoro berada. Pengolahan buah rambutan meningkatkan nilai buah rambutan disaat panen raya, selain mencegah penurunan harga pasca panen, pengolahan menjadi selai mencegah pembusukan buah karena penumpukan dalam proses penjualan. Buah rambutan yang diolah menjadi selai membuat proses penyimpanan menjadi lebih lama. Produk selai yang dihasilkan dapat diolah sebagai pelengkap di isian kue kering, roti ataupun cake.. Kegiatan pelatihan ini selain membuat selai juga membuat kue nastar dengan isian selai rambutan, ketrampilan ini dapat dikembangkan secara terus menerus oleh peserta sehingga dikemudian hari dapat membantu perekonomian. Kata Kunci: rambutan, selai rambutan, nastar isi selai rambutan This training program in community service is expected to improve skills for students and participants who can finally increase their income and fill in their leisure time which has an impact on economic improvement. The processing of rambutan fruit will increase the fruit value of rambutan at harvest time, besides preventing a decline in post-harvest prices, processing into jam prevents fruit decay due to accumulation in the sales process. Rambutan which is processed into jam makes the storage process last longer. Produced jam products can later be processed as a supplement as filling in pastries, bread or cake. Rambutan fruit is found around Tembalang and the Semarang region where Vocational Schools Diponegoro University are located. This training activity in addition to making jams also making nastar cakes with rambutan jam filling, this skill is expected to be developed continuously by participants so that in the future it can help the economy. Kata Kunci: rambutan fruits, rambutan jams, nastar with rambutan jams
