Abstract

It is undeniable to express that architectural designs have a defining role in developing an identity, impression, and finally sense of a place. Traditional architecture which grows and develops along with the course of culture, natural conditions, geography, topography, and the social system, has characterized the existence of vernacular architecture of certain localities. The idea of embracing traditional architectural principles and forms into the current design of a built form has always been a real challenge. This encounter is even intensified when design in architecture is understood as a process of addressing needs, ideas, inspiration, conformance to a set of guidelines, as well as an embedded message an architect would like to convey through her/his design. This article discusses the approaches and efforts made by Grounds Kent Arsitek Indonesia (GKAI) in embracing traditional Balinese architecture in designing The Alantara Resort Sanur. This is a study that applies a qualitative approach, implementing interviews and in-depth design observations as its methods in data collection. By focusing on the building style, the results of this study show that there was a great deal of re-interpretation process of Balinese traditional architecture taking place, including 1) adaptation in the application of the Tri Angga concept; 2) domination in the use of local building materials; 3) adjustment in techniques as to how traditional building decorative elements are produced and used; 4) modification in the spatial hierarchy of certain structures; and 5) simplification in form of ornaments and decorative elements in use.

Abstract

This article raises a query in regard to the suitability of the 'studio' as a learning method in the field of architecture. Its existence is inspired by the central position of the studio in the curriculum for building design. The studio-based course absorbs a relatively more significant portion of resources, time, and energy compared to others which play a supporting or enriching role. This article applies an inductive approach and explorative method in both data collection and analysis. By considering the various components of influence in architectural learning – aspects of pedagogy, cultural diversification, social interests, and advances in science and technology –, the discussion and results of the study are described in three sub-topics. First is an exploration of a studio design-based education and its roles in learning. Second, it is a study of adapted learning methods that are initiated and implemented by various academic institutions in the same field. And third, it is an extraction of relevant learning methods for future education in the field of architecture.

Abstract

Abstrak  Traditional Balinese houses represent a form of the architectural heritage of the Indonesian archipelago, having evolved in accordance with the cultural, religious and philosophical values of Balinese society. The design of traditional Balinese dwellings is guided by the Asta Kosala Kosali, a system of rules governing spatial layout, orientation, dimensions and therelationships between buildings within a natah (compound). One of the key elements of this system is Sikut Satak, a traditional measurement method that uses human body dimensions as a reference for determining the size of spaces and buildings. This study aims to examine the application of the principles of Asta Kosala Kosali in the planning of traditional Balinese houses, particularly regarding the determination of plot area, building orientation, the placement of entrances, the spacing between buildings, and the layout of the compound’s landscape. The method employed was descriptive qualitative research through a literature review of various sources relating to traditional Balinese architecture. The findings indicate that the application of Asta Kosala Kosali serves not only as a technical guideline for house construction but also reflects a harmonious relationship between humans, the environment, and spiritual values. Body-based measurement systems, such as depa, hasta, kilan, musti, nyari, andatampak, result in building dimensions that are appropriate for the occupants. Furthermore, the division of space into the Utama Mandala, Madya Mandala and Nista Mandala reveals a spatial order that carries philosophical significance. Consequently, the Asta Kosala Kosali plays a vital role in preserving the identity of traditional Balinese architecture and must be safeguarded amidst the advance of modern development.

Abstract

This article examines a sustainable architectural tradition embodied in the formation of the Bale Tengah within the Tenganan Pegeringsingan community in Bali. The Bale Tengah has been selected for its distinctive symbolic role in representing the conception of the life cycle within the broader framework of Tenganan’s belief system. The study seeks to establish a connection between vernacular architectural forms and practices, the sustainable utilization of natural resources, and the continuous assurance of equitable access to these resources for the community across generations. On one hand, the research investigates deeply embedded and well-practiced belief systems, such as the krama adat’s collective codes, social mores, and ethical values. On the other hand, it analyzes five determining elements of architectural formation symbolism, form, structure, construction, and the materials employed. A qualitative methodology has been adopted, combining subjective interpretation with empirical field research. Data collection was undertaken through a series of architectural documentations and in-depth interviews involving key community figures and krama adat village leaders. The findings reveal that although the term “sustainability” is absent from the Tenganan Pegeringsingan vocabulary, the community’s traditional dwelling embodies the essence of sustainable practice. Both the conception and construction of the Bale Tengah reflect a philosophy of safeguarding the future by maintaining social cohesion and ensuring the conservation of natural resources. This process historically rooted and self-reflective has played a crucial role in sustaining the endurance and continuity of the Tenganan Pegeringsingan community.
