Abstract

The research and design of the Kaganga Script Revisualization as Lampung Identity or Had Lampung is an attempt to provide aesthetic value to the conventional letter system. The aesthetic aspects that were given derived from Lampung cultural traditions, icons, and other visual idioms, such as ornaments on tapis cloth, carvings, traditional clothing accessories, and the stylization of Lampung's unique flora and fauna. The research method of the Kaganga script re-visualization is using Creative Thinking Process approach of Bryan Lawson, who applies steps in solving visual communication problems through several stages; (1) initial understanding (2) preparation (3) incubation (4) information (5) verification. Data analysis is done by considering several aesthetics factors; legibility, readability and unity. From several design or prototype alternatives that have been tested, the new Kaganga script using the Jungian (ship) motif was selected. This design uses Lampung traditional idioms to stylize the original script, which are the stylization of the Jung / Ship motif and the motif of Gold Thread Embroidery. Furthermore, this design can be continued on to the public testing and introduce it to Lampung public after it has been digitized.

Abstract

Lampung has many traditional and distinct motifs, one of which is “Pucuk Rebung” and “Kapal”. Both of these motifs are visual elements that we can find on Lampung's weaving, Tapis. As time goes by, these traditional motifs had undergone a shift in terms of production technique, application, and public perception of the motifs. This traditional motif has been developed by creative industries such as several distro in Lampung and applied to fashion products, ranging from accessories, t-shirts, and so on. Research shows a change in traditional motifs (Pucuk Rebung and Kapal), especially on composition and application of motifs, and not on the main visual elements itself. This certainly shifts the visual perceptions of Lampung youth towards the traditional motifs. Research on Lampung youths visual perceptions of traditional motifs will help designers to innovate, especially in utilizing Lampung's distinctive motifs. Research shows that traditional motifs score slightly higher than the new motifs. traditional motifs (both Pucuk Rebung and Kapal) are considered more dynamic, more elegant, (giving) more (sense of) proud, more meaningful, and better.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to determine the pattern of internet use as a source of inspiration for design students in the early stages of the design process. In the design process, words and images are factors that greatly influence creativity, and the internet makes it easy for students to access these data. The research conducted through distributing questionnaires to undergraduate product design students to determine their internet usage tendency in finding design inspiration. By knowing the pattern of internet usage and what sites they usually visit, we can find out the input quality that students get independently when looking for inspiration. This is an important aspect to avoid design fixation.The result shows that in the process of searching for inspiration through the internet, students tend to use sites that are general and have more visual data (such as pinterest) in the first place, then followed by searching more about linguistic data (design explanations, features, functions, etc.) (such as behance), and then the usage tend to be more diverse depending on each students style and preference. The use of search keywords is still dominated by references that are near and even exactly the same as the design categories they are developing (exp. searching car designs reference when designing cars). This enhances the possibility of design fixation.To enhance the quality of input obtained by students will be better and reduce the possibility of design fixation, higher education institution could make the finding inspiration process in a more structured system such as lectures or other formal method. Key words: product design, early phase design, internet, creativity, design education

Abstract

Lampung language learning is a compulsory lesson at the elementary school level in Lampung. In the current era of globalization, it is difficult for elementary-level students to learn local languages because they are more focused on other things, such as playing games and social media. Interest in learning the Lampung language is no longer attractive to them. The purpose of holding community service at the MIT Muhammadiyah Sukarame first grade elementary school is to increase interest in learning the Lampung language and introducing the Lampung script to elementary-level students. The method used is direct observation, surveys, and conducting pre-tests & post-tests on students' abilities. This research showed an increase in the interest of first-grade elementary students in learning the Lampung language. Their interest was due to the textbooks provided in the form of pop-up book media, which, in addition to displaying an almost complete visualization, also allowed students to interact with books independently. With this dedication, it is hoped that elementary grade one students will get to know and like the Lampung language better at MIT Muhammadiyah and other schools that need it.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis penggunaan ilustrasi dalam desain kemasan vernakular produk snack yang dijual di pasar tradisional Bandar Lampung. Dalam konteks globalisasi, desain kemasan vernakular berperan penting dalam mempertahankan dan menghargai warisan budaya lokal melalui integrasi unsur visual yang autentik. Penelitian ini mengisi kesenjangan pengetahuan dengan fokus pada pengintegrasian elemen budaya lokal dalam kemasan produk, yang umumnya ditemukan di pasar dan warung kecil. Metode yang digunakan adalah mixed method, dengan survei lapangan di delapan pasar tradisional di Bandar Lampung dan analisis visual yang diikuti dengan perhitungan statistik deskriptif. Data dikumpulkan secara acak melalui dokumentasi foto kemasan snack dan dianalisis berdasarkan variabel penggunaan ilustrasi, kedekatan ilustrasi dengan produk/merek, representasi isi produk, serta penggunaan unsur lokal yang mencerminkan kearifan lokal. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 72,5% kemasan menggunakan ilustrasi, dengan 67,9% menonjolkan elemen produk. Selain itu, representasi visual beragam, namun hanya sekitar sepertiga kemasan yang mengintegrasikan unsur lokal. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa meskipun banyak desain dihasilkan oleh desainer non-profesional, nilai budaya lokal tetap mendukung autentisitas dan identitas desain vernakular.

Abstract

In the design process, inspiration, whether in the form of words or visuals, plays a significant role that can be both beneficial and lead to design fixation. This research aims to examine the patterns of inspiration-seeking by Visual Communication Design (DKV) students in the initial stage of packaging design using the internet. The study employs a quantitative method, with DKV students as the research subjects. Cluster random sampling is used to select third-year DKV students at ITERA. Data is collected through an online questionnaire, and descriptive analysis is applied for data analysis. The results indicate that during the search for packaging design inspiration, students tend to prefer visually-oriented websites they visit first. Furthermore, on the second and third websites visited, the proportion of descriptive explanations (concepts and design explanations) gradually increases. This suggests that, in the initial stage, students tend to prioritize visual aspects over explanations, and later consider narratives or conceptual explanations. Some frequently visited websites include Pinterest, Behance, and Freepik. Additionally, there is no significant difference in the use of concrete and abstract keywords in the search.Keywords: design, inspiration, creativity, earlyphase.AbstrakPada proses perancangan desain, inspirasi baik dalam bentuk kata ataupun visual memiliki peran penting yang bermanfaat dan menimbulkan design fixation. Penelitian dilakukan untuk mengkaji pola pencarian inspirasi mahasiswa DKV (Desain Komunikasi Visual) pada tahap awal (early design) perancangan desain kemasan menggunakan internet. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif, dimana subjek penelitian adalah mahasiswa DKV. Teknik pengambilan sampel menggunakan cluster random sampling pada mahasiswa DKV tingkat 3 di ITERA. Pengumpulan data menggunakan kuesioner online, sedangkan teknik analisis data menggunakan analisis deskriptif. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa dalam proses pencarian inspirasi desain kemasan, mahasiswa lebih memilih laman yang lebih berorientasi visual pada situs yang pertama kali mereka kunjungi. Lebih lanjut, pada situs kedua dan ketiga yang dikunjungi, proporsi deskripsi penjelasan (konsep serta penjelasan sebuah desain) secara bertahap meningkat. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa cenderung lebih memilih mempertimbangkan aspek visual dibandingkan penjelasan untuk tahap awal, selanjutnya dengan melihat narasi atau penjelasan konsep. Beberapa situs yang paling sering dikunjungi diantaranya adalah Pinterest, Behance, dan Freepik.
