Abstract

Damage to coral reefs on the coast of Palopo City will certainly threaten their productivity. Therefore, it is essential to use and manage coral reefs in the coastal area of Palopo City by applying the principles of a conservation area management system through integration, participation, and multi-stakeholders. This study aims to analyze the level of damage and the causes of coral reef damage and formulate a strategic model for managing coral reef ecosystems in the coastal area of Palopo City. Methods of data analysis using analysis of coral reef conditions, analysis of patterns of damage to coral reefs, and analysis of the processes' hierarchy. The percentage of live coral cover in the coastal area of Palopo City is categorized as damaged / sour with a percentage value (0–24.9%). One of the causes of damage to coral reefs in the coastal area of Palopo City is the existence of community activities that have damaged coral reefs in the past, such as fishing using non-environmentally friendly fishing gear such as fish bombs and potassium. The highest level of damage to coral reefs was at station 1, with a depth of 4 meters and the percentage of the mortality index was 82.07%. Simultaneously, the lowest level of damage is at station two at a depth of 4 meters, with a mortality index percentage of 69.73%. The first priority strategy in managing coral reef ecosystems on the coast of Palopo City is to determine the zoning of coastal areas. The second priority is coordination between stakeholders. The third priority is the preparation of regional regulations regarding the use of coral reef ecosystems. The fourth priority is to increase training programs for fishing communities.

Abstract

Organic waste has always been the waste with the largest production in Indonesia. Therefore, technology is needed that is able to process organic waste and make it more useful. One of the efforts that is being implemented in Purwosari Village is to use Black soldier fly larva technology. Black soldier fly larvae have the ability to change organic waste so that it has use value. The objectives of this community service activity are (1) increasing the knowledge of the partner community regarding the use of the Black soldier fly fly, (2) providing knowledge to the partner community regarding the technology of processing household organic waste using Black soldier fly larvae, (3) increasing the knowledge and skills of the partner community about the use of Black soldier fly larvae as high protein fish feed, (4) increasing community knowledge in maintaining The black Warrior flies. The method used is the transfer of technology through lectures, training and mentoring. The result of this activity is that the partner community has learned the knowledge of processing household organic waste using Black soldier fly larvae. The skills of partner communities regarding the processing of household organic waste using Black soldier fly larvae are increasing and partner communities can provide alternative feed to their farmed fish. This activity has also attracted the interest of the community outside Purwosari Village, so that after the socialization session and discussion, many people came to the maggot cultivation site to learn firsthand how to get maggot seeds.

Abstract

Decision-making in a household should not be done single-handedly by the husband as the head of the family. However, it needs to involve the wife, who plays an important role in improving the family economy. Generally, the women or wives in Palopo had not been involved in decision-making and had not been fully supported by government programs taking sides with the women. This study sought to analyze gender equality of decision-making in fisherman households and formulate a priority strategy for achieving gender equality in these households. Data collection was done using observation and structured interviews using questionnaires addressed to 7 stakeholders consisting of government agency officials, the Chair of Fisherman Cooperative, the Head of Nasyiah, and the Head of the Fisherman Group, as well as 30 families (husband and wife) whose livelihood depended in the fishery sector. The Moser analysis and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) were used to analyze the obtained data. This study revealed some results. The women or wives were responsible and more dominant as decision-makers in household, family, and financial matters. The men or husbands were responsible and more dominant decision-makers in production activities and social affairs. In addition, implementing outreach programs for coastal communities in Palopo had not been gender-responsive. Thus, the priority strategy in achieving gender equality in fisherman households, which holds the best opportunity and is considered important by stakeholders, is developing a guidance program for coastal communities, men, and women.

Abstract

The management of fishery resources in Lake Sidenreng faces various challenges in the form of high exploitation pressure, less selective use of fishing gear, and weak integration between formal institutions and community-based management practices. These conditions have the potential to affect the sustainability of fishery resources and the welfare of the fishing community. This study aims to analyze the sustainability status of fishery resource management in Lake Sidenreng and formulate a management model based on local ecological knowledge of the community. The research was carried out in November 2025 – January 2026 using a survey method through in-depth interviews guided using questionnaires and focus group discussions (FGD) with 44 respondents consisting of stakeholders and fishermen. Data analysis was carried out using the Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) method with the RAP-Amen approach, leverage analysis, and Monte Carlo. The results show that the ecological dimension with an index value of 62.5 and the social dimension with an index value of 65.7 are included in the category of quite sustainable, while the economic dimension with an index value of 48.3, technology with an index value of 42.8, and law and institutions with an index value of 45.2 are still classified as less sustainable. Sensitive attributes that affect sustainability the most include net size, fishing season, fisher income, knowledge transfer, strengthening local institutions, and fishing gear selectivity. Local ecological knowledge of fishing communities plays an important role in setting fishing seasons, selective fishing gear selection, and protecting fish habitats, but has not been optimally integrated into formal policies. Therefore, the recommended management model emphasizes on strengthening local ecological knowledge, strengthening the fishermen's economy based on environmentally friendly technology, and strengthening local institutions through a co-management approach. The integration between local knowledge and formal management systems is expected to be able to realize sustainable, adaptive, participatory, and community-based fisheries management in Lake Sidenreng.
