Abstract

Background: The housewife is a group of women who are at risk for sexually transmitted infections. Sexually transmitted infections is one of the risk factors for pre-cancerous cervical lesions. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the incidence of sexually transmitted infections with cervical precancerous lesions on housewife in Sangkrah health center, Surakarta Methods: This study was a descriptive cross sectional analytic approach that was conducted in June-August 2012 in Sangkrah health center, Surakarta. Sampling was done by purposive sampling technique. In this study, researchers took a sample size of 53 samples. Research carried out by filling out the questionnaire, followed by a visual inspection test checks acetic acid (VIA) and the examination of sexually transmitted infections. Where is a sexually transmitted infection is gonorrhea, candidiasis and bacterial vaginosis. Data analysis using chi-square method. Results: This study shows the value of relationship to STI: a) Gonorrhea p = 0.299, CI95% = 0.236 to 71.357, and RR = 4.10, b) Candidiasis p = 0.160, CI95% = 0.236 to 71.357, and RR = 6.29, c) Bacterial Vaginosis p = 0.117, CI95% = 0.413 to 136,271 and RR = 7.50. From the results of these data revealed that there was no relationship between the incidence of sexually transmitted infections with pre-cancerous cervical lesions housewife in Surakarta but clinically meaningless to pose the risk of precancerous cervical lesions. But found a significant relationship between STI> 1 types and cervical precancerous lesions where p = 0.000, CI95% = 1.659 to 1507.303 and RR = 50.00.   Conclusions: There is no relationship between the incidence of sexually transmitted infections (Gonorrhoea, Candidiasis, and Bacterial Vaginosis) with pre-cancerous cervical lesions on housewife in Sangkrah Health Center Surakarta. Keywords: Sexually transmitted infection, Cervical Precancerous Lesions, Housevives, Surakarta.

Abstract

Background: Seeds of Swietenia mahagoni Jacq. contain various antioxidants such as alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, triterpenoids, steroids, and tannins. They are thought having hepatoprotector effect. This study aimed to know the influence of Swietenia mahagoni Jacq. to decrease alanin transaminase level in paracetamol-induced mice. Methods: Samples were 25 male mice, Swiss webster strain, 2-3 months old  and + 25 g of weight, each. Samples were divided into 5 groups, each group consisted of 5 mice. Group K(-) were administered aquadest, while group K(+) were administered curcuma with the dose of 25 mg/25 g body weight of mice for 14 days. Group  P1, P2 and P3 were consecutively administered mahagony seed extract with the dose of 0 mg, 14 mg and 28 mg/25 g body weight of mice for 14 days. Paracetamol was administered to groups of K(+), P1, P2, and P3 on the 12th, 13th, and 14th day. On the 15th day, blood samples were taken and the ALT (alanine transaminase) level was measured with a Model 902 Automatic Analyzer Hitachi. Data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test (α = 0.05) and Post Hoc Mann Whitney test (α = 0.05). Results: Mean rate of alanine transmainase of group K(-), K(+), P1, P2 and P3 was 54.04  ± 7.74 U/L; 46.74 ± 3.33 U/L; 173.5 ± 39.445 U/L;  88.90 ± 37.04 U/L and 73.18 ± 7.46 U/L, consecutively Conclusions: There was correlation between the oral administration of mahagony seed extract (Swietenia mahogany Jacq.) and the decrease of alanin transaminase level in paracetamol-induced mice. Keywords: Alanin Transaminase (ALT), Seed extract of Swietenia mahagony Jacq.,

Abstract

Asthma is characterized by both chronic inflammation and remodeling of the airways. Eosinophils may contribute to inflammation associated with bronchial asthma by causing tissue damage and subsequently organ dysfunction, but also by the generation of cytokines and lipid mediators. It was reported in previous studies that pharmacological activities were identified in various compounds extracted fromEuphorbia hirta L. such as antiinflammatory, histamine inhibitor, lipoxygenase inhibitor, anti-allergic and cyclooxygenase inhibitor. This study was aimed to determine the effect of E. hirtaextract onperipheral blood eosinophils count in mice model of allergic asthma. MaleBalb/C mice were sensitized and challenged intraperitoneally (i.p) with ovalbumin(OVA). Mice were immunized i.p. on days 1 and 14 with 2.5 mgof OVA adsorbed to 7.75ml of Aluminium hydroxide gel. OVA challenges (10 mgOVA in l ml of PBS) were administered aerosolly on days 21, 23, 25 and 27, andperipheral blood eosinophilscount was determinedon day 28.A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with LSDpost hocanalysis was used to determine significant differences. Results were expressed as mean+SEM, and values of p 0.05wereconsidered statistically significant. The results showed thatperipheral blood eosinophilscountin the OVA group was51.0+10.4cells/mm E. hirtaextract dose 500 mg/BW/day was30.2+6.3cells/mm3,E. hirtaextract dose 1,000 mg/BW/day was 30.4+6.0cells/mm and antihistamine group was32.2+8.6cells/mm respectively, whilecontrol mice showed46.6-8.8 cells/mm3. It was concluded that E. hirta extract could minimizeperipheralblood eosinophilscount.
