Abstract

Nowadays, especially in STKIP PGRI Tulungagung, the reading interest of the students is varied. But, they realize that reading is important. But, there were opinion from students that the lecturers’ strategies can affect their interest in reading or in reading lesson. The aim of this study is to know how students’ perspectives on lecturers’ strategies in teaching reading. For that reason, it does not analyze the way students learn during reading lessons. But, it just analyzed from the students’ opinion. The subjects of this study are students from semester two and students from semester four. There are two instruments employed: questionnaires (close and open questionnaires) and interviews. From the data obtained, the results of close and open questionnaires, most students from second semester and fourth semester have thought that in reading activity, it is not only focus on pronunciation. Then, they also thought that reading activity is very important to increase their knowledge even to add vocabulary. Furthermore, they agreed if reading is beneficial to add vocabulary and knowledge. Then, most of them said that the strategy used by lecturer in teaching reading is good and acceptable.

Abstract

There are communication almost fail because of misunderstanding of the reference. Thus, explaining reference for its importance in communication is needed. Reference means pointing that is as an act in which a speaker or writer uses linguistic forms to enable a listener or reader to identify something. Reference can be divided into two: exophora and endophora. Furthermore, there two kinds of exophora: homophora and deixis. Deixis is a form of referring that is tied to the speaker´s context. In addition, deixis concerns the way in which languages encode or grammaticalize features of the context of utterance or speech event, and this also concerns ways in which in the interpretation of utterances depends on the analysis of that context of utterance.

Abstract

Deixis is clearly a form of referring that is tied to the speaker´s context which leads us to the concept of deictic centre. The deictic centre can be divided into certain ‘sub-centres’: (1) person deixis; (2) time deixis; (3) place deixis; (4) discourse deixis; and (5) social deixis. This research provides descriptive knowledge of the way in using deixis of fourth semester students of STKIP PGRI Tulungagung.This research is a descriptive qualitative for it describes deixis found on the written texts made by C class of fourth semester in English department both group A and B. Furthermore, this research is called qualitative because this research has soft data, it is in the form of words, and it provides rich description and analysis of the data.Person deixis can be found as: subject, object, possessive adjective, reflexive or emphatic pronoun, name of person, definite and indefinite noun. Furthermore, place deixis in students’ writing can be found only in word where as adverb of place. In addition, time deixis can be seen in the form of adverb of frequency, noun phrase, adjective of time, adverb of time, numeral adjective, and temporal conjunction.

Abstract

Meaning cannot be transfered well if there is errorin grammar. This paper aims to determine the grammar errors committed by the 6th semester students of English Education Department as basis for new method. Specifically, the study aims to answer: 1) what grammar errors are committed by the 6th semester students of English Education in their written text; and 2) what factors caused the students to commit these errors in writing as evident on their written composition. The respondents of this study consisted of english education students, Semester 6. Result showed that the common grammar errors committed by the 6th semester students of English Education are: verb f, tenses of the verb, sentence structure and word order, the use of articles and preposition, punctuation and capitalization, and spelling. 2 Big factors as the cause of errors are : direct factors and indirect factors.
