Abstract

Basic Writing is the first basic writing course for students in English Education Program of STKIP Garut, which is aimed to develop students' writing English skill. The efforts have been developed to improve the learning on Basic writing course and one of them is the use of multimedia. The research questions of this research were: 1). does the use of Computer-Assisted Instruction can improve the students' writing skill?, 2). does the conventional media also improve the students' writing skill?, 3). Is there any significant of improvement between the use of Computer-Assisted Instruction and conventional media?. The research used the quantitative approach and was conducted through the Quasi-Experimental Design. The research conducted between two classes, the experiment and control class, by using 50 students as samples in English Education Program of STKIP Garut. The research findings showed the primary points that the use of Computer-Assisted Instruction improved the students’ writing English simple sentence skill due to the gain value with the medium category on Basic writing course in STKIP Garut; The students’ writing English simple sentence skill of control class, which the students did not use the interactive instructional multimedia, improved considering the gain value with the low category; and There was the significance level of difference that the students who used the Computer-Assisted Instruction were better than the students who did not use the Computer-Assisted Instruction or on the other hand used the conventional media.

Abstract

The demand for increased foreign exchange especially in remote areas, can be obtained from tourism objects that are visited by many local and foreign tourists. To attract the foreign tourists in particular, the tourism objects may require street signs, brochures, pamphlets, or information boards written in English to make the foreign tourists visiting the tourism objects understand easily the information related to the tourism objects. Therefore, this community service program was necessarily held in two main objectives: (1) socializing the importance of using brochures and pamphlets written in English in order to attract more foreign tourists; and (2) providing workshop to recognize language features in functional texts which should be used in the brochures or pamphlets. As many as 10 hostel owners around tourism objects in Pamengpeuk followed this community service program. The methods used were lecture and training provided to the participants in the form of workshop. The findings of the community service program showed that there was no brochures or pamphlets written in English found in the hostels around tourism objects in Pamengpeuk. Furthermore, the results of the workshop revealed that 60% of hostel owners were enthusiastic in learning to write brochures in English and encouraged to make one during the workshop. However, the rest of them appeared not interested and believed that without making brochures in English the hostels still gained profits and visitors from local tourists and foreign tourists. Thus, the socialization for the importance of making brochures in English to promote tourism objects and hostel in remote areas needs to be followed up again in the next community service program.

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP), defined by Hutchinson and Waters (1987) as a goal oriented approach that tailors language instruction to learners’ specific professional needs, occupies a central place in vocational education in Indonesia. Current policies such as the Merdeka Curriculum and Ministerial Decree No. 244/M/2024 emphasize that English instruction in vocational high schools must prepare students for the linguistic demands of their respective fields rather than for general communication alone. However, existing studies primarily investigate ESP within a single vocational major and focus on needs analysis or material development, leaving limited understanding of how teachers implement ESP simultaneously across different departments with distinct technical discourses under one curriculum framework. This study aims to examine how ESP materials are implemented in two majors, Software Engineering (RPL) and Electrical Installation Engineering (TITL), at SMK Teknologi Mandiri in Garut, West Java. A qualitative descriptive design was employed through four classroom observations and semi structured interviews with two experienced English teachers. The findings reveal four consistent implementation strategies: technical vocabulary introduction, genre contextualization of national curriculum text types, authentic material use, and vocational task simulation. The study also identifies three major challenges, namely limited instructional time, demands on teachers’ technical knowledge, and varied student proficiency levels. The findings suggest that effective ESP implementation in a multi major vocational context depends on interdisciplinary collaboration and adaptive material development to align curriculum requirements with workplace communication needs, thereby strengthening students’ readiness for Field Work Practice.
