Abstract

The article reports an investigation on the differences between the schematic structure of English and Indonesian research article introduction. By selecting thirty research articles from each group and analysing them using the CARS model (1990, 2004), this study has unravelled several differences. At the macro level, the English articles respectively have a higher percentage of reviewing items of previous research, indicating gap, and summarising methods. While their Indonesian counterparts tend to have a greater deal with making topic generalisations, presenting positive justifications, and stating the value of the present research. In addition, while the Indonesian articles have more unidentified schematic elements and lack outlining the structure of paper, the English ones demonstrate a higher degree of move reiteration. At the micro level, the English articles are characterised by the use personal deixes as self-mention, and more variation of linguistic clues in claiming centrality. On the other hand, their Indonesian counterparts are depicted by the absence of self-mention, the use of code mixing, and a major tendency in using amplifiers and evaluative adjectives in claiming centrality. These differences might be partially influenced by the writers’ culture, knowledge, editorial policy, social environment, and in certain cases, the technical problems.

Abstract

Developing an English cohesive and coherent writing requires an effort of connecting ideas grammatically and semantically. To explore this, we carried out a research study by analyzing fifteen journal abstracts from international journals in ELT whose impact factors are within the top 10 in the field. The data showed that the abstracts make use of integrated pattern, not relying simply upon a single pattern. The findings also suggest ambiguous relationship between some clauses, many of which rather represent inductive relationship; therefore coding them into the three thematic progression patterns in Eggins (1994) seemed to be less accommodating. Further research on this subject would then require more sophisticated research theoretical framework.

Abstract

This paper investigates the preferred criteria EFL undergraduatesin an Indonesian University use for journal article selection and the strategiesthey employed for the reading of the articles. Five final year students wereinterviewed to collect pertinent data. Using semi-structured interviewtechnique, the findings suggests that the main criterion for journal articleselection is its similarity with their research topics. In addition to this, theyalso consider journal reputation as well as ease of access. Their preferencesmight be partially influenced by prior instruction from lecturers in relevantcourses. In terms of reading strategies, they reported they did not read thewhole article whilst focusing on certain structure such as abstract, findings, and conclusion. These strategies are mainly cognitive and overlook themetacognitive ones. Therefore, teachers are suggested to scaffold the readingjournal articles to foster critical thinking and evaluation of the selectedarticles as well as metacognitive awareness to construct arguments from thetexts.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore how EFL pre-service teachers conceptualize and perceive creativity. A total of 226 pre-service teachers enrolled at a state university, Universitas Islam Negeri Mataram, participated in a survey, and six of them voluntarily took part in a follow-up focus group interview. Their conceptions of creativity were investigated using open-ended questions and interviews. In addition, their perceived creativity was assessed through a self-report scale adapted from the Creativity Styles Questionnaire–Revised (CSQ-R). The findings indicate that their conceptions are partially aligned with prevailing theories of creativity, encompassing creative outcomes, individual traits, and creative processes. Furthermore, the majority of participants identified themselves as medio-creative. Creative individuals reported greater use of techniques, heightened sensory awareness, control over environmental and behavioral factors, and stronger beliefs in unconscious processes. The study also discusses implications for pre-service teacher education. The aim of this study is to explore how EFL pre-service teachers conceptualize and perceive creativity. Abstract

This paper seeks to explore the undergraduates’ experiences when reading journal articles as references for their thesis composition through a narrative inquiry. Four undergraduates of English Language Education program at UIN Mataram were interviewed to analyze  what they encountered when reading such genre. The findings suggest that their experiences mostly circulated around their motivation and challenges, therefore the narratives were focused on these facets. In terms of motivation, these students seemed to be strongly driven by controlled motivation that entailed the need for a model, accessibility and currency, as well as demands from supervisors and institutions. Furthermore, these students also encountered challenges in terms of unfamiliar academic technical terms and vocabulary, boredom due to text complexities, and failed reading strategies. These findings imply the need of scaffolding the reading of journal articles for undergraduates in their final year of study.
