Abstract

Developing an English cohesive and coherent writing requires an effort of connecting ideas grammatically and semantically. To explore this, we carried out a research study by analyzing fifteen journal abstracts from international journals in ELT whose impact factors are within the top 10 in the field. The data showed that the abstracts make use of integrated pattern, not relying simply upon a single pattern. The findings also suggest ambiguous relationship between some clauses, many of which rather represent inductive relationship; therefore coding them into the three thematic progression patterns in Eggins (1994) seemed to be less accommodating. Further research on this subject would then require more sophisticated research theoretical framework.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aimed to explore the translation strategies and identify the types of idioms found in the novel The Adventure of the Speckled Band: Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The study was based on two main theories. Baker’s theory was applied to identify the translation strategies used, including using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, using an idiom of dissimilar meaning and form, translation by paraphrase, and translation by omission. Meanwhile, McCarthy and O’Dell’s theory was employed to categorize idioms into types such as similes, binomials, proverbs, euphemisms, clichés and fixed statements, and idioms from other languages. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method and was designed as library research. Data were collected through five steps: close reading, identification, note-taking, classification, and coding, in order to ensure the validity of the findings. The results revealed that fifty-eight idioms were identified in the novel. The most frequently used translation strategy was translation by omission, indicating that the translator often chose to exclude idiomatic expressions that might not transfer well into the target language. Furthermore, the most common types of idioms found in the novel were clichés and fixed statements, suggesting the frequent use of conventional expressions in the source text.

Abstract

Classroom assessment serves both summative and formative functions to gauge evidence, evaluate and improve student learning. Assessment evidence is only meaningful when it reflects the true picture of student learning. In this sense, the role of effective assessment instrument, such as test, as crucial to obtain a valid and reliable evidence of student learning. However, we remain in caution about the ability of teachers in designing and developing assessment instruments which are underpinned by a sound theoretical understanding of language assessment principles. This research is set out to evaluate classroom-based assessment instrument (e.g., language test) against five principles of language assessment. To achieve the intended purposes, the research adopts an evaluative research approach by which assessment instrument developed by a teacher was evaluated and rated against the principles. Documentation was used as a method to collect data by which language tests developed by teachers were collected in person. The teachers’ made testscollected in this study were analysed deductively based on five principles of language assessment. The study indicates that the teacher-made test was in general meet all aspects ofthe principles. However, some aspects within principles are not adequately addressed. Some principal suggestions are provided.
