Abstract

The second largest food waste and plastic waste producer in the sea, Indonesia is faced with serious challenges when it comes to waste management. Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) is a province in Indonesia that urgently prioritizes waste management. Community-Based Solid Waste Management (CBSWM), a solid waste management system with many proven benefits, is popularly used in many developing countries including Indonesia. Aimed at developing the CBSWM model in NTB, this study was conducted by collecting the primary data through the FGD process as well as the secondary data. This study found that although the local communities had the motivation and willingness to manage their solid waste, they had limited knowledge and skills. The CBSWM model is expected to accelerate the solid waste management activities in NTB.

Abstract

Tourism activities are more likely to bring positive impact on the economy of the society. However, if managed poorly, the tourism activities may also bring a bad luck to the region. One of the negative impacts is the excessive unmanaged waste. The excessive waste may create problems that harm the environment and affect the society well-being. This paper aims to examine the potential of sustainable waste management practice in tourism area in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. This paper also intent to specifically examine the potential of community participatory aspect in sustainable waste management. This research uses Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) methodology to assess the primary data. Additionally, further analysis of secondary data is also added. The research is conducted in tourism area in Saribaye village, Lingsar, West Nusa Tenggara province. The results show that Saribaye village residents still lack of enviromenment awareness and the infrastructure is still far from adequate to support a sustainable management practice. However, the Saribaye village community have a high willingness to learn about the sustainable waste management practice and their current demographic structures may support the sustainable waste management development in the village.

Abstract

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated digitalization in Indonesia, including for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Zean Store, a Muslim clothing MSME in Cilimus, Kuningan, faced challenges in digitalization due to limitations in time, knowledge, and local competition. A mentoring program was implemented to enhance marketing through social media (Instagram, TikTok), open an online store on Shopee, and adopt a simple bookkeeping system using Google Sheets. The results of the mentoring showed improvements in brand awareness, operational efficiency, and sales. This study emphasizes the importance of digitalization for the advancement of MSMEs in the digital era.

Abstract

This study compares carbon emissions across panels of high-income countries (HICs) and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Using the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis as a theoretical framework, this study observes the curve for each income panel using random effects panel regression, controlling for the scale, composition, technological, and pollution outsourcing effects. With a dataset ranging 30 years from 1990 to 2019 and a panel of 18 HICs and 20 LMICs, the regression results validate the presence of an EKC-like relationship between emissions and income per capita for both panels. Key findings show that LMICs are on a path of growth that emits fewer emissions than HICs at the same income level due to access to less emission-intensive technologies. This suggests that, in contrast to previous theoretical understanding, the effects observed in the EKC occur simultaneously rather than sequentially and may be leveraged to dominate at any point on the curve. In practice, LMICs are urged to dismiss the “grow now, clean later” ethos and instead, adopt cleaner production methods through energy efficiency initiatives, technological transfers, and technological leapfrogging to manage economic growth without a corresponding growth in emissions. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research explores the role of the tourism sector in Indonesia, including its backward and forward linkages with other economic sectors. The tourism sector is represented by the hotel and restaurant (hospitality) industry. The study uses the input-output method and traces the econometric backward and forward shocks of the tourism sector with the Error Correction Model (ECM), using database from Statistics Indonesia from 2010 to 2019. The paper contributes to the existing literature by using multi-stage quantitative processes to observe backward and forward economic linkages. The result shows that manufacturing output contributes a significant and positive effect to the hotel and restaurant industry. At the same time, the tourism sector provides a significant and positive contribution to government retribution. Nonetheless, there is a negative relationship between the growth of the agriculture and tourism sector, which is assumed due to the tradeoff in the factor of production between the agricultural and tourism sector development. Consequently, backward and forward relationships suggest more holistic and prudent economic policies for observing interdependent tourism development in Indonesia's other economic sectors.
