Abstract

Age estimation is one of the important components in forensic science used for personal identification, biological profile reconstruction, and help narrowing the search possibilities. Age estimation can be done by various methods and biological evidence, such as the human face. The human face is one of biometrics that provides a variety of information.  The purpose of this article is to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of age estimation with face using smartphone for forensic identification based on previous studies and experiences. Age estimation by face is based on age progression that causes attrition and degeneration on soft tissue. With the development of technology, age estimation by face can be done with applications or websites on smartphone. In general, the utilization of smartphone can reduce waste, pollution, research cost and easier to save and share. A lot of applications have been developed and free to download. Unfortunately, the accuracy of its results is unknown. In conclusion, the applications for age estimation on smartphone give quiet good results and can be used as a supporting tool to estimate age in forensic identification.

Abstract

Background: The individual age as documented in the birth certificate shall be authorized as a chronologicalage. In several countries, falsification of documents relating to an individual age is becoming a major problem,since it is correlated with monetary, marriage, and education matter. Forensic dentistry works to minimizethe possibility of individual age falsification by studying the tooth developmental stages. The objective ofthis study is to observe the applicability of the third molar development related to the biological age.Materials and Methods: A total of 93 OPG (orthopantomogram) of subjects (16 – 23 years old) from theJava population were involved in this study. Third molar developmental stages of the mandibular wereevaluated using the Demirjian et al. method. The statistical analysis was carried out using IBM® SPSS®Statistics version 23.0 (IBM, Armonk, NY, USA).Results and Conclusion: The result showed that the average Java population reached the final stage at anaverage age of 21 ± 1,39 years in females and 20 ± 1,9 years in males. The present study indicates that thedevelopment of mandibular third molar is slightly earlier in males than in females. Besides, Demirjian’smethod is considered as a reliable method for dental age estimation in the Java population.

Abstract

Lip prints are wrinkle patterns and grooves on the mucosal surface of the lips. Just like fingerprints, every individual in this world has their own unique lip prints patterns. According to the previous studies, the parents of cleft lip and palate (CL/CP) patients have certain lip print patterns. As a result, the lip print pattern can provide information on the inheritance of CL/CP. This review aims to explore the potential of lip print patterns as a means of identification in the inheritance of cleft lip and palate. The online literature search in the PubMed database, Science Direct, and Google Scholar was conducted with a combination of the following keywords: “lip prints”, “cleft lip/palate suffer”, “lip print classification”, and “cleft lip/palate prints”. In addition to online literature searches, reference lists from all the included articles were manually examined for further full-text studies. This review included research and review articles published during the last 10 years period (2012-2022). The result showed that there were 7 articles that met the inclusion criteria. In conclusion, various studies explained that the lip prints pattern type II and whorl/O are the most observed in the inheritance of CL/CP.

Abstract

Background: Age may be estimated using tooth eruption sequence and/or calcification stage. Because many factors may affect the time of eruption, the tooth calcification stage shows higher accuracy than the time of tooth eruption. Demirjian’s and Willems’ methods have been most commonly used for dental age estimation. Both Willems and Demirjian use the calcification stage as an indicator. Studies comparing these methods have shown varied results, as they have been performed on different populations. Purpose: This paper aims to analyse the estimation of children's age based on dentition via panoramic radiography in Surabaya, Indonesia. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study using a purposive sampling method. One hundred digital panoramic radiographs of children between 6 and 15 years that match the inclusion criteria from the Airlangga University dental hospital in Surabaya, Indonesia were evaluated. One researcher analysed estimated dental age (EDA) three times in a one-week time-lapse using Demirjian’s and Willems’ methods. Statistical analysis was carried out using a Paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. EDA was calculated using both Demirjian’s and Willems’ methods. Results: The mean chronological age (CA) was 10.57 ± 2.70 for males and 10.73 ± 2.84 for females. The mean difference between CA and EDA using the Demirjian and Willems methods was -0.57 ± 1.17 and 0.10 ± 0.96 for males and 0.58 ± 1.40 and 0.44 ± 0.94 for females. Conclusion: The results suggest that Willems’ method is more precise than Demirjian’s method in males and females and more suitable for children in Surabaya, Indonesia.

Abstract

Background: The Demirjian method is used in assessing the stages of growth and development of teeth to calculate a person’s estimated age. In 1973, Demirjian identified the eight stages of tooth growth and development and their respective criteria. Purpose: To analyze the validity of Demirjian’s method for estimating dental age among children aged 6–17 years old in Surabaya, Indonesia. Methods: From August–October 2020, 162 panoramic radiographs of patients aged 6–17 years were taken at the radiology department of Airlangga Dental Hospital. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS software for different tests, including a paired t test. Results: Using the Demirjian method, there was no significant dissimilarity between chronological age (CA) and estimated dental age (EDA) in the male group. However, a significant dissimilarity was found between CA and EDA in the female group. Conclusion: Demirjian’s method can be used as a tool for estimating the dental age of males age 6-17 years old in Surabaya.

Abstract

One of the crucial steps of identifying an individual is to determine their sex. The mandible, which is the largest and strongest bone in the human face, is a useful tool due to its significant sexual dimorphism. Two features that are recognized for their high sexual dimorphism are the gonial angle and mandibular ramus height. Several studies have shown different results when using both measures to estimate sex, factors that are thought to influence morphological differences include age, population, sex, and physical activity. The objective of this study was to analyze the differences in gonial angle and mandibular ramus height between sexes using panoramic radiography. Additionally, it aimed to analyze the correlation between these measurements and sex. The measurements of the gonial angle and mandibular ramus height were conducted using ImageJ software. Initially, the specific anatomical landmarks were identified, and the software’s measurement tools were then employed to accurately assess the height and angle based on these selected points. The sample consisted of secondary data obtained from 70 panoramic radiographs of patients aged 20–45 years at the Dental and Oral Teaching Hospital (RSGMP) of Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya. Data analysis was conducted using the independent t-test and Pearson correlation. There was a significant difference in the mandibular ramus height between sexes, with males having a greater height (p < 0.05). It was also discovered that, despite the fact that males exhibited a smaller gonial angle compared to females, this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.29). Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed between mandibular ramus height and sex (r = 0.498); however, there was no significant correlation between gonial angle and sex (r = -0.128). The study reveals a significant difference in mandibular ramus height between males and females, with males exhibiting greater height. This parameter shows a strong correlation with sex, making it a reliable indicator for sex determination. Conversely, the gonial angle is not suitable for this purpose.

Abstract

Background: A dentist is responsible for promoting oral health and disease prevention to make the world a better place in terms of oral health. Besides, the dentist also plays an important role in the forensic field and law enforcement. Forensic odontology is an area of dentistry that deals with the proper management and investigation of dental evidence, which aids in identifying people and the presentation of dental evidence in the interest of justice. Purpose: This article discussed the role and responsibilities of dentists in human identification. Review: The world continues to deteriorate as time passes with much criminality and disasters that cannot be prevented. In many cases, the identification process can be done through the unique characteristics of dentition. Various information such as age, sex, and ethnicity are recorded in the tooth. Forensic dentists are responsible to manage and evaluate tooth evidence. Conclusion: Forensic odontology plays an essential role in determining individual identity. The unique features of dentition provide accurate results in identification if all procedures are correctly employed. With the advancement of science and technology, dentistry may now assist in the identification and investigation of forensic cases.

Abstract

Introduction: A dental medical record is a systematic documentation of a patient, provided by the dentists. Various information including the patient data, diagnoses, treatments, and odontogram are recorded in the dental medical records. In Indonesia, the guideline of dental medical records has been established by the Ministry of Health. However, the preliminary study by the Department of Forensic Odontology, Faculty of Dental Medicine Universitas Airlangga, showed that many dentists documented the medical records, not following the Medical Record Guidelines from the Ministry of Health. Purpose: This study aims to determine the dentists' understandings of the completeness of dental medical records according to the Dental Medical Record Guidelines by the Ministry of Health of Indonesia. Methods: A total of 358 dentists in East Java participated in this study by fulfilling an online questionnaire. Results: The results showed that approximately 27.4% of the respondents are conducting dental medical records following Dental Medical Record Guidelines. Conclusion: The results of this study are expected to be considered as a reference for the implementation of socialization on the Dental Medical Record Guidelines and the formulation of policies that regulate the use of dental medical records following national standards.

Abstract

Background: Forensic odontology is a field concerned with the use of dental evidence to identify the age, race, gender of victims and suspects in mass disasters, abuse, and organized crime. General dentists are required to have basic knowledge and expertise in forensic dentistry. Aspiring dentists in dental professional education must demonstrate mastery in both medical and dental sciences, which is a requirement to fulfill the dentist competency standard. Forensic dentistry supports preclinical and clinical skills in both basic and applied dentistry. Therefore, research is necessary to determine the level of knowledge of undergraduate dental students, dental professional education students, and dental specialist program students regarding the field of forensic odontology. Information about the level of knowledge was obtained by using a questionnaire that inquired about the content of the material measured. In this study, the research subjects were undergraduate dental students, dental professional education students, and dental specialist program students at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Universitas Airlangga. Purpose: Analyze the level of knowledge of students at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Universitas Airlangga, regarding the field of forensic odontology. Methods: This study is an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional research design. This study used Google Forms for data collection with closed questionnaires. Results: According to the results of this study, a significant majority of respondents, specifically 83.3%, demonstrated a level of knowledge in the good category. Conclusion: the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Universitas Airlangga students had knowledge levels in a good category regarding the field of forensic odontology.
