Abstract

This research was aimed at inquiring the application of roleplay toward the EFL learners’ oral proficiency achievement. An experimental design, primarily on the pre-experimental design, was used in this research. Thirty-eight university students were taken conveniently as the research sample. A test and a close-ended questionnaire were administered to rate the oral proficiency achievement and perception of the EFL learners. The findings revealed that (1) the oral proficiency achievement level (OPAL) of the EFL learners in the experimental group was in the good and very good achievement level, (2) there was a significant improvement on the EFL learners’ OPA after the intervention given, and (3) then positive perception made by the EFL learners about the application of roleplay on their achievement of oral proficiency. In concluding, using roleplay made a significant improvement on the EFL learners’ oral proficiency achievement. This research also provides pedagogical implication for lecturers, students, stakeholders, and near future researchers to apply this as the alternative instructional activity to develop the oral proficiency of the English language learners.

Abstract

The aim of this research attempted to determine whether using NHT technique significantly improved the students’ reading comprehension and significantly made a difference on the students’ reading comprehension who were taught by using NHT and those who were not A Quasi Experimental design was used as the research method. The sampling technique used in this research was purposive sampling. Pretest and posttest, in the form of Reading comprehension test, were used to collect the data of students’ reading comprehension. Paired samples and independent samples t-tests were employed to calculate the students’ reading comprehension achievement. The research findings showed that there was a significant improvement on the students’ reading comprehension who were taught by using NHT technique and there was a significant difference between the students reading comprehension who were taught by using NHT and those who were not.Key words : Numbered Heads Together, reading comprehension, descriptive text

Abstract

AbstractThis research attempted to see whether the cooperative leaning was impactful on EFL learners’ critical thinking aspects. Non-equivalent pretest and posttest control group design of comparison group design was used in this research. The population of the research was all of the undergraduate students of University of Indo Global Mandiri. Forty students were selected as the sample purposively in the experimental group (treatment group) and control group (non-treatment group), respectively. A critical thinking rubric was employed to measure the EFL learners’ critical thinking(aspects) and critical thinking aspects(total). The research findings revealed that (1) there was a significant improvement on the EFL learners’ critical thinking(aspects) and critical thinking (total), (2) There was a significant mean difference on the EFL learners’ critical thinking(aspects) and critical thinking aspects(total), (3) there was a significant contribution of the critical thinking skill (aspects) and critical thinking aspects(total) in which the aspects of framing personal responses and acknowledging other perspectives had the lowest contribution and the aspects of recoqnizing stakeholders and context had the highest contribution. In conclusion statistically the cooperative learning was significantly impactful on the EFL learners’ critical thinking aspects in English language teaching.Keywords: Cooperative learning, critical thinking aspectsAbstrak Penelitian ini berusaha untuk melihat apakah pembelajaran kooperatif berdampak pada aspek berpikir kritis peserta didik EFL. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian non-equivalent pretest and posttest control group design of comparison group design. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah semua mahasiswa sarjana dari Universitas Indo Global Mandiri. Empat puluh siswa dipilih sebagai sampel secara purposif dalam kelompok eksperimen (kelompok perlakuan) dan kelompok kontrol (kelompok non-perlakuan). Rubrik berpikir kritis digunakan untuk mengukur pemikiran kritis (aspek) pembelajar EFL dan aspek berpikir kritis (total). Temuan penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa (1) ada peningkatan yang signifikan pada pemikiran kritis (aspek) peserta didik EFL dan  pemikiran kritis (total), (2) Ada perbedaan rata-rata yang signifikan pada pemikiran kritis peserta didik EFL (aspek) dan aspek berpikir kritis (total), (3) ada kontribusi signifikan dari keterampilan berpikir kritis (aspek) dan aspek berpikir kritis (total) di mana aspek membingkai tanggapan pribadi dan mengakui perspektif lain memiliki kontribusi terendah dan aspek dari para pemangku kepentingan dan konteks yang memiliki kontribusi tertinggi. Kesimpulannya secara statistik pembelajaran kooperatif berdampak signifikan pada aspek berpikir kritis peserta didik EFL dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris.Kata kunci: pembelajaran kooperatif, aspek berpikir kritis

Abstract

The present inquiry investigated the dicto-comp’ effectiveness on the writing achievement of EFL learners. An experimental research design, chiefly concerned on the non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group design, was taken into the research. Thirty six students were taken as the sample purposively. An English writing test was employed as the primary instrument to assess the writing achievement of EFL learners. The research results found out (1) the EFL learners’ English writing achievement level in the group of experimental after the treatment given was in the good and very good category, (2) dicto-comp significantly improved the EFL learners English writing achievement in the experimental group, and (3) dicto-comp made significant difference on EFL learners’ English writing achievement than those who were not. In conclusion, implementing dicto-comp improved the writing achievement of the EFL learners significantly. Pedagogical implications for English students and lecturers, stakeholder, and near future researchers were also made in this research.

Abstract

This research aimed to improve students’ reading comprehension achievement using Question-Answer-Relationship (QAR) strategy and to determine students' perception toward the application of QAR strategy. The research design was a pre-experimental design. The population in this research was seven grade students of SMP Tri Dharma consisting of three classes, namely VII A, VII B, VII C. The researchers used 33 students of class VII B as the sample for this research. This research used reading test and a closed ended questionnaire to collect the data. This research used paired sample t-test and percentage analysis to analyze the obtained data. The results of paired sample t-test showed that t- obtained was 25.438 and p. was 0.000 (p<0.05). This means that there was a significant improvement in students' reading comprehension after being taught with the QAR strategy. The results of percentage analysis showed that the students' perception of the QAR strategy was positive. It perceived that the QAR strategy was effective to help the students improve their reading comprehension achievement significantly. Those findings indicated that the QAR strategy was effective in improving students' reading comprehension achievement of descriptive texts for the seventh graders of SMP Tri Dharma Palembang in the academic year 2021/2022.

Abstract

This research aimed at seeing whether or not the EFL learners had positive perception towards teaching English writing with dictocomp. An experimental research design which mainly concerned on the descriptive analysis was used. Eighteen students were selected purposively as the research sample. A close-ended questionnaire with 15 question items was used as a main instrument to see their feedback. The research findings revealed that the EFL learners’ learning motivation and confidence were exceedingly boosted. In addition, their English writing difficulties were slightly solved. Furthermore, their English writing performance had positive and significant development after being instructed with dictocomp. Another positive response was about the English writings aspects of the EFL learners were also well-improved. Thus, in concluding, the EFL learners had positive perception towards the implementation of dictocomp in English writing classroom.

Abstract

Vocabulary is an important aspect of language learning. Vocabulary is important to learn because it can help students understand listening and learning materials and create good sentences in speaking and writing. It can be challenging for students’ to memorize English words, therefore they still need to increase their vocabulary achievement in order to become proficient in the language. Therefore, the writer investigted the used of Action Race Game to find out whether or not there was any significant enrichment on students’ vocabulary after the instrument applied and whether or not there was any significant mean difference between those who were taught by using action race game and those who were not. The research used the experimental group and control group consisted 67 students’ eighth class SMPN 38 Palembang. To asses students’ vocabulary achievement, the writer proceeded the pre-test at the beginning of the research and followed the post-test end of research. The vocabulary achievement was analyzed by using SPSS. The result of this study indicated that there was there any significant difference between those who were taught by using action race game and those who were not. It was found that t-obtained value was 13.552 at significant value of p<0.005, the t-table value was 2.0369. Since t-table value of t-obtained is higher that t- table, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the null hypothesis (H1) was accepted. In other words, the use of action race game in vocabulary learning had positive effects on their vocabulary learning.

Abstract

DRTA strategy is effective in teaching and learning reading purposed to improve students’ reading comprehension. Students read the material short stories and make predictions then they read segments of the text and confirm or revise previous predictions; Finally, the steps continue until they finish reading the entire text. This study aimed to determine the effect of the method Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) in improving students'reading abilities. This research was conducted to describe the techniques of teaching reading comprehension used, and to find out how the techniques applied by the teacher in teaching reading understanding in seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 38 Palembang In this study, narrative quantitative research was used to obtain information related to research problem. Researcher used a study Experimental with a research Control Group Design. The population is a grade VII 3 and VII 4 student at SMP Negeri 38 Palembang .The sample in this study were VII 3 students as experimental class and VII 4 as control class. The data obtained from the objective test result of multiple choice as much as 50 questions then analyzed with, validity test, test reliability, questions,difficulty level test questions, normality test, homogeneity test and hypothesis. The result of data processing through statistical calculation by using pre-test and post-test to show the results in the experimental class and control class and the results showed that the experimental class has a higher value than control class so that there was a significant difference between the experimental class control class in the seventh gradestudents of SMP Negeri 38 Palembang . Thus, the methods of Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) can be used both teachers and students to improve students' reading ability.

Abstract

Vocabulary is the base component of language that needs to be mastered, because it covers all of the language skills, teaching vocabulary is very important especially to students. Therefore the writer used a way to enrich vocabulary in students, namely by using picture cards media, picture card media is a type of learning media that used picture cards. The writer conducted research at SMP Tri Dharma Palembang in class VIII.B, which consisted of 45 students. The writer used a pre-experimental procedure, the data collection technique used in this research was using pre-test and post-test, before the writer gave the pre-test and post-test questions to the students, the writer conducted an instrument test for the English teacher (expert judgment), to see whether the instrument was good to use or not. After getting an assessment from expert judgment, the writer gave 25 valid questions with multiple choice a, b, c, d, and if the number of one correct value would get a score of 4, and if students answered all the questions correctly they would get 100 points. And from data analysis the writer used Paired simple t-test, it is useful to find out the whether there is a difference between the Pre-test and Post-test, and the writer used SPSS 25 program. Therefore Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted, it can be concluded that by using picture cards media can enrich vocabulary in class VIII.B SMP Tri Dharma Palembang.

Abstract

Morphological analysis helped to infer the meaning of several words, and, at the same time, learn new words. This research aims to find out, to count and to explain the kind of morpheme in Morphological Analysis of “Bahasa Inggris Think Globally Act Locally” Book 2018 Revised Edition for 9th Grades by Ministry of Education and Culture. The research method used qualitative method. To find out the data and count the result, this research used descriptive qualitative by calculating the percentages. The data displayed that free morpheme is the most common type of morpheme because free morpheme is a basic word. The number of words found was 19163 words spread over 209 pages, where bound morphemes were found as many as 3056 items which consisted of 39 items derivational prefixes, 993 items derivational suffixes, and 2024 items inflectional suffixes. It means, the result showed the use of Prefixes was only 1%. Meanwhile, the use of Suffixes was 99. Although the use of prefixes and suffixes was enequal, this book can still help students to enrich the vocabulary mastery with 30 types suffixes provides.
