Abstract

The use of natural materials in the world of health tends to increase every single year, including  in dentistry. Due to the increased of resistance to antibiotics, the development and new innovations to obtain a new antimicrobial agent. Some potential sources of plants have been studied. One of the natural plants is used as drinks, food, medicine and antimicrobial agent is Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn commonly known as Roselle. Several major Gram-negative bacteria are related to periodontal disease such as Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.gingivalis), The dominant species of Gram-positive including Streptococcus sanguis(S.sanguis). The purpose of this in vitro study is to evaluate the Roselle ethanol extract against P.gingivalis bacteria (Gram negative bacteria) and S. sanguis (Gram positive bacteria) with a concentration of 2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10%. The in vitro study of antibacterial effectiveness of Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) ethanol extract on P.gingivalis and S. sanguis. Natrium Agar (NA) solution was poured into a glass plate which had previously been sterilized and then left in place until the medium solidified. P.gingivalis and S.sanguis bacterial cultures were inoculated with inscribed which had solidified. Then put paper disk which had previously been saturated with Roselle extract samples with a concentration of 2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10%, and the negative control at the surface of the medium (Ampicillin) and incubated for 1 day. Clear zone is formed then observed and measured. There are 24 samples, consisting of 12 samples  P.gingivalis and S.sanguis 12 samples, given intervention roselle flower extract with four types of concentrations to determine the minimum inhibitory consentration (MIC). The observations show that the extensive zone of inhibition concentration of 2.5% a broad zone of inhibition is the smallest among other concentration, both of S.sanguins and P.gingivalis. Meanwhile, the average increases the broad zones of inhibition of P.gingivalis followed by increasing concentrations of roselle flower extract, making it the largest broad zones of inhibition are shown at a concentration of 10%, However, the bacteria S.sanguins, shows that vast zone of greatest inhibition was found at a concentration of 7.5%. The results of this research showed that the ethanol extract of roselle effectively inhibits P. gingivalis as Gram-positive bacteria atconcentrations of 10% and S. sanguins at a concentration of 7.5%. Iit can be concluded that the ethanol extract of roselle flowers effective at inhibiting Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria.

Abstract

Prosthodontic treatment aims to restore the chewing function (rehabilitation) and to prevent tooth decay and bone resorption (preventive and conservative). As an example, treatment by overdenture and Richmond crown. Overdenture is a partial or complete removable denture covered and supported by one or more teeth, the tooth roots and/or dental implants. Richmond crown is fixed denture by post and crown system, in which the post part goes into the root canal and its crown covers the entire of original tooth crown surface. By retaining the original teeth and/or roots, it could improve the stability and retention of the denture, and defend proprioseptic of teeth and vertical dimensions. To provide information about preventive prosthodontic treatment and prevention by using overdenture and Richmond crown. Case Report: A 50 year old woman only has 44 teeth on the mandible which is indicated for the overdenture construction and loss teeth 13, 14, 17 and 27 on the maxilla with deep caries in teeth 22 which is indicated for a removable partial denture (RPDs) construction by Richmond crown gear 22. On an early stage study, printing models is done. Then treatment of the root canal on teeth 22 and 44, followed by root canal preparation, core construction (cast post) and Richmond crown on tooth 22 and bareroot preparation on tooth 44 for overdenture construction. The procedure followed by printing, recording bite to insertion. Choosing treatment either overdenture or Richmond crown is very important because it could mantain remain original teeth, thus it can help to improve the retention and stabilization.

Abstract

Prosthetic rehabilitation is the rehabilitation process of masticatory and esthetics function for patients missing teeth and alveolar bone by means of manufacture and installation of dentures. The prosthetic rehabilitation commonly used include denture adhesive bridge, fixed-fixed bridge, as well as telescopic overdenture. Adhesive bridge is bridge denture consisting of single pontic and two retainer wings attached to the abutment using cement or resin. Fixed-fixed bridge is a bridge denture with rigid connectors on both ends of the pontics, whereas the telescopic crown Overdenture is a removable denture that uses linked precision on the original tooth in the form of primary coping on abutment and secondary coping on the denture. To expose the procedures of prosthetic rehabilitation using adhesive bridge and fixed-fixed bridge on the maxilla and telescopic crown Overdenture on mandible. Male patients aged 32 years came with complaints of difficulty to chew food because he had lost some teeth behind. In the maxilla, teeth are lost in the region of 15 and 16 performed by making the fixed-fixed bridge with abutment teeth 14 and 17. Loss of teeth in the region of 26, performed the manufacture of adhesive bridge with a box preparation on the occlusal 25 and 27. In the mandible, tooth loss in the region of 36,37,46, and 47 performed manufacture of telescopic crown Overdenture with primer coping on the teeth 35.38, 45, and 48 and the secondary coping on a metal frame. Prosthetic rehabilitation especially in the case of loss of back teeth is very important because with the denture patients can chew properly and maintain the stomatognathic system.

Abstract

To overcome the failure of cement adhesive bond between tooth and metal surfaces, a variety of alternative treatmentsis applied to the metal and tooth surfaces. In order to overcome this disadvantage, this study deals with the treatmenton the metal surface in mesh form. This research examined different mesh sizes of 40, 60 and 80 mesh to the metalsurface treatment in shear bond strength of adhesive resin cement. 40 pairs of upper central incisors samples wereprepared in palatal surfaces with a thickness of 0.3 mm and made a pattern of blue wax. The samples were divided intofour groups; three mesh treatment groups (40, 60 and 80) and a control group (no mesh). In the treatment groups, amesh was positioned to the opposing surface of wax pattern to the tooth preparation surface, was casted with nickelchromiumalloy, attached to the palatal surface of the teeth with adhesive resin cement, immersed in artificial salivafor 24 hours at 37°C. Moreover, shear bond strength test and residual resin cement on the metal surface were tested inLaboratory of the Department of Metallurgical Engineering. Data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA (p=0.05).Shear bond strength adherence of mesh plates 60 was found greater than 40, 80 and control group. Stereomicroscopeinspection of adhesive resin cement remaining on mesh 60 was similar than 40, but more than mesh 80 or controlgroup. It was concluded shear bond strength of adhesive resin cement to metal surfaces depends on the size of meshused, and shear bond strength of adhesive resin cement that still intact on the mesh surface.

Abstract

Hump of pineapple is one of traditional medicines found in Indonesia, containing many enzyme bromelains that canparse complex protein molecules into simpler compounds. The enzyme bromelain can inhibit the growth of Candidaalbicans. The increasing of colonies of C.albicans could be due to the increased use of denture. This study shouldexplore effectiveness of hump concentration of cayenne pineapple against C.albicans growth at 30 heat curing acrylicresin plates sized 10 x 10 x 2 mm. The plates immersed in 10 ml of C.albicans and incubated for 24 hours at 37°C. Theplates were divided into 6 groups, subsequently 5 acrylic resin plates, which were soaked for 8 hours at roomtemperature in an hump extract of cayenne pineapple with the concentration of 5%, 15%, 25%, 35%, and 45%.Negative control was soaked in distilled water. 0.01 ml of a 10-3dilution and dropped into the media sabouraunddextrose agar (SDA), and then incubated for 48 hours at 37°C, and counted the number of C.albicans colonies. Analyzed with ANOVA and LSD test, it was known a significant difference of hump extract of cayenne pineapple 5%,15%, 25%, 35%, and 45% against C.albicans growth (p <0,05). On from this fact, it was concluded that hump extractof cayenne pineapple can inhibit the growth of C.albicans, which is effective at a concentration of at least 15%.

Abstract

To overcome the failure of adhesive bridge due to release of the adhesive bond cement between teeth and metal, preparation modification was performed with a pin hole in the teeth cingulum. This study aimed to determine the effectof thread on a pin hole to shear strength adhesion of adhesive bridge. Forty maxillary incisors were prepared at theirpalatinal surfaces 0.3 mm thick, and were divided into four treatments (threaded hole+threaded pin, threaded holes+non-threaded pin, non-threaded holes+threaded pin, non-threaded holes+non-threaded pin). Casted-plates made fromnickel chromium alloy were cemented to the palatal surface of the tooth with adhesive cement (Panavia TMF 2.0), andthen adhesion shear strength tested. The test and evaluation of the residual cement on the surface were performed inLaboratory Metallurgy, Department of Engineering ITB. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA test (p=0.05).Adhesion shear strength of plate with threaded holes+threaded pin has the highest retention. Residual cement onthreaded hole+threaded pin plates similar to threaded hole+non-threaded pin, but more than any other groups. theconclusions were, the adhesion shear strength depends on the design of pin hole. The wider surface of cementremaining on the plates, the greater adhesion shear strength.

Abstract

An alternative treatment for extensive dental caries is using jacket crown. But this restoration could accumulate dentalplaque and can lead to gingivitis. Mouthwash is believed could reduce plaque. Nowadays, most of mouthwash inmarket contains alcohol so that not all individuals can use it. For that reason, we need a free of alcohol mouthwash. The use of medicinal plants from natural materials is increasingly widespread and will be a part of life. One type oftraditional medicinal plants are now widely consumed across the world is roselle flower (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.)because it cointains flavonoid that are fungistatic, fungicid, and bacteriostatic. This studywas aimed to determine theeffective concentration of roselle infusion ingredients to reduce the amount of plaque in acrylic crown. Five peopleusing acrylic crown were asked to rinse using 4 concentration of roselle infusion and distilled water as control for 30seconds, with time interval 1 week for each concentration. Examination of the amount of plaque was performed beforeand after rinsing. The results showed that mouthwash made from roselle infusion is able to reduce the amount ofplaque in acrylic crowns (P<0.05). It was concluded that concentration of 20% roselle mouthwash effectively reducingthe number of plaques at acrylic crown.
