Abstract

Abstract This article aims to discuss the migration process of the Buginese-Makassarese to north Bali. Based on oral history, they had lived in north Bali since the 17th century. They later settled down in the kampongs of Buginese in Buleleng, Penyabangan, Celukan Bawang, and Sumberkima. The migration process was driven by political and economic problems. The Makassarese and their allies was lost during their struggle against the Dutch-East India Company (VOC) in 1667/1669. The migration flow of Makassarese was increasing due to the rebel of Kahar Muzakar DI/TII in South Sulawesi. Economically, they have sails to catch sea cucumbers and turtles then sell them to Singapore. The Buginese-Makassare always preserve their Bugineseness identity while they are interacting with the Balinese. Nevertheless, some aspects of their identity are gradually disappearing, such as ethnic language and house architecture. Although they have different religion and belief, they can adapt to the Balinese customs and culture. Using Balinese language and marriage with Balinese are the media to maintain their relationships with the locals.

The slowness of adaptation and regeneration further distances Basing's art from everyday life. The people of Kajang are trying to maintain it, but recently they have faced many obstacles. The mechanism that is still maintained is the relation of traditional art to the ritual of prayer for death. The purpose of this paper is to explain the relationship between traditioal art and rituals for the death and the constraints to inherit the art. This research used qualitative data that collected and analyzed based on village monograph, participant observations, and interviews. The observation is carried out during the Basing art performance at the death prayer ritual. The interviews were conducted on several people which proportionally representing social roles, including traditional community leaders, village government bureaucrats, teachers, youth art activists, village elders, and artists. The research found that restriction to the customary areas is only able to control people's behavior based on customary values and norms, but is not able to force residents to develop the Basing arts. However, the inheritance of arts faces obstacles because the people of Kajang are not able to carry out cadre of artists as successors and reinforcers of the existence of Basing art.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze youth participation in the preservation of Jaran Kepang art through the Rogo Samboyo Putro (RSP) Paguyuban in Kediri Regency, East Java, as well as its role in maintaining local cultural identity in the midst of globalization. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, research data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The analysis was conducted by referring to Stuart Hall's cultural identity theory, which views cultural identity as a fixed form (identity as being) and an ever-evolving process (identity as becoming). The results showed that youth have a very important contribution to the preservation of Jaran Kepang through four types of participation, namely decision-making, activity implementation, evaluation, and benefit distribution. The RSP Association is a forum for passing on traditional arts while modernizing costumes and promotion through social media. A structured organizational structure, a culture of deliberation, and a sustainable work program strengthen the role of youth in developing Jaran Kepang art. Thus, the art of Jaran Kepang not only functions as a cultural heritage, but also transforms according to the times, so that it remains relevant as a reinforcement of the identity of the Kediri community.

Abstract

Pinggir Papas Village has attracted attention because it has succeeded in preventing COVID-19 cases while maintaining their local traditions. This happened during the COVID-19 pandemic which hit the whole world and amid globalization. To remain relevant within the framework of Islamic teachings and today's modern world, the baberten tradition, which is considered part of the local cultural heritage and beliefs, needs to be rationalized. This research aims to interpret the baberten tradition in Pinggir Papas Village, Kalianget District, as well as the rationalization of mysticism as a method of disease prevention. By using qualitative methods and an ethnographic approach, the data and research data sources come from the baberten tradition and sources as well as baberten tradition activities. The baberten ritual is performed twice a year, with three different processions. This ritual has certain goals and symbols. Three main components are involved in value rationalization, (1) offerings, (2) reading prayers, mantras and Surah At-Taubah, and (3) night journey. The research findings show that rationalizing the values of the baberten tradition can give rise to a more reasonable understanding of the values of mysticism and allow baberten to continue without eliminating the religious principles adhered to by the residents of Pinggir Papas Village. Thus, this research provides a foundation for the sustainability and maintenance of cultural heritage in Pinggir Papas Village and makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the dynamics between local traditions, Islamic religious teachings, and contemporary challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
