Abstract

There were some miscommunications occurred between speakers and listeners because the listener did not understand the core intent of the speaker, especially what was conveyed implies pragmatic meaning. Thus, "pragmatic" material is urgently needed to be incorporated to the curriculum of basic English as well as English conversation, to enrich student's vocabulary in understanding the culture and meanings of native English speakers. Thus, this study is aimed to develop the pragmatic based English material that is appropriate to the students’ needs of Hotel Management study program. This research was conducted based on Research and Development techniques (R & D). The research was carried out by: (1) analyzing the existing curriculum and syllabus, analyzing existing materials, and analyzing the students' needs to identify problems, (2) reviewing the principles about effective teaching materials, (3) designing syllabus and teaching materials, (4) validating new teaching materials with the experts, and (5) revising teaching materials as advised by experts. The data were collected through questionnaire analysis and interview. Meanwhile, the development of the material followed these steps, as used by Hutchinson in Ichsanda (2013: 36): 1), collected information on target needs by distributing questionnaires to students of STIM Sukma, 2) analyzed students' learning needs, 3), read and analyzed pre-existing materials; 4) developed materials according to student needs; 5), revision; 6); prepared the drafts; 7), and had a triangulation with experts; 8); final drafts; 9), product application. Based on the analysis, material that is appropriate with hotel management study program has been created and developed.Keywords: Developing materials, hotel Management

Abstract

Understanding someone’s utterances who has different cultural background with the listener certainly should be intended. Lot of miscommunications occurred between speakers and listeners, in case that the listener does not get the core intent meaning of the speaker. Specifically, what has been conveyed implies indirect meaning. Thus, Understanding pragmatic is very important. Rahman (2017) has created a book with pragmatic approachment. Rahman (2017) carries various daily hotel conversations that convey pragmatic meaning. Then, the book has been taught to the students as well. Thus, this study is aimed to investigate the students’ perspective on that book implementation. A Survey was used to collect the data by using questionnaire and interview. 40 students of hotel management were involved in this study. The research reveals that 33 respondents (82.5%) strongly agree that the book is contextual with their daily work and practice. It is also revealed the fact that 34 respondents (85%) said the book represents their hard skill levels. Yet, the book also motivates students to learn by seeing the data that 31 (78.5%) students informed that they are curious to learn the book by practice.

Abstract

The use of virtual learning media is now being daily needs since global pandemic appears. All educations units must use virtual platform to ruin learning process. This study is aimed to investigate the effectiveness of virtual media platform used by lecturer from students’ perspective, in teaching and learning process of English education students in Public Speaking subject. Besides, the research focuses on analyzing how effective the media is from students’ point of view. This study is a case study approach, that is natural qualitative. The study involved university students, conducted on one biggest university in Medan, Indonesia, majoring in English Education. The participants were surveyed through questionnaire distributed through Google Survey. The questionnaires and interview were conducted to assemble the data related to students’ experiences in using certain online media given by the lecturers, both provided by the institutions and other platform. By their response, Zoom Cloud Meeting is the most effective media in teaching-learning process, where 79% of them say so. It is followed by Whatsapp, where 41.30% respondents choose it. This findings hopefully will be great consideration for the researcher and other parties, to apply the chosen media in teaching learning process, as students expect in their response.

Abstract

This study attempts to investigate the lecturer’s perspective, whether TOEFL subject is necessary for English education study program or not. This study is a case study approach that is naturally qualitative. The study involved three lecturers of English Education Study Program as participants.. This study was conducted at one State University on North Sumatera, Indonesia, majoring in English Education. The participants were interviewed through interview via telephone. The lecturers were asked and interviewed about their opinions about the existence and the implementation of TOEFL subjects in the study program. The data were analyzed by using percentage calculation. After the participants answered the interview, the data were then classified according to its origin. The respondents have different perspective on this study. Two respondents stated that TOEFL should not be included as a subject to be studied by the English Education students in case TOEFL is tips and trick skill based, not knowledge base. In contrary, one of the respondent stated that TOEFL is required to be added to the curriculum, in case the students have not understood all aspects in reading which then TOEFL should be learned by students in specific credit subject.

Abstract

The study is focused on investigating the English Department Students of Semarang State University perform the speech act of promise, the most dominant strategies used, the factors influence the students in performing promise, and to analyze the pragmatic transfer occurred in their English conversations. The respondents of this study were 25 students of the sixth semester English Department, Undergraduate Program, Semarang State University. The data were collected by Discourse Completion Task (DCT). The responses were classified into 13 promise strategies as proposed by Gibbs & Delaney (1987). Furthermore, their responses which contained the pragmatic transfer were also identified and interpreted into two types of pragmatic transfer based on Kasper (1992): pragma-linguistic transfer and socio-pragmatic transfer. Using the DCT, 245 responses in English and 168 responses in Bahasa Indonesia were collected. The result showed that the respondents dominantly used “explicit promise” strategy (26.53 %) in English illustration, and “future act” strategy (23.31 %) in Bahasa Indonesia illustration. Moreover, the most dominant factor that influenced promise performance was the social power level, followed by social distance, formality, and last rank of imposition. Last, there were pragmatic transfers occurred in performing the promise. The students still transferred their L1 cultural norms into English interactions specifically in making promise, both in pragma-linguistic transfer and socio-pragmatic transfer.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate whether students with introverted and extroverted personalities have significantly different levels of anxiety or not. This study involved 59 students of the English Education Study Program at one of the state universities in North Sumatra. Samples were taken randomly from five classes of sixth semester students who took the Public Speaking course. Semi-structured technique was used in data collection. The data was processed by using two methods; statistical calculations for quantitative data related to the results of filling out questionnaires regarding their level of anxiety when doing public speaking which consists of 17 questions, as well as substantive analysis for qualitative data related to the results of comparison of responses from respondents. The results shows that that 31.03% of introvert students having high anxiety, followed by 68.97% students possessing moderate level of public speaking anxiety. In contrary, 13.33% of extrovert students having high anxiety, followed by 86.67% of them having moderate level of anxiety. The biggest anxiety of respondents is in context “my heart pounds when I give a speech”, where introvert students averagely in 4.03 and extrovert students in 3.03. There are numerous suggestion that students and educators can use to overcome the issues.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to investigate the substantial difference in public speaking abilities between students with a natural science and social science background in their high school, and to investigate the students’ point of view related to this issue. This study is a case study approach that is naturally qualitative, which involved 163 students of English Education Study Program, at one state university on North Sumatera province. Semi-structured techniques were used for data collection. The data collected in this study then were inspected out by using two methods; statistical count for quantitative data related to students’ senior high school educational background, and particular substances analysis for qualitative data related to students’ performance in their public speaking. Questionnaire and interview were conducted to assemble the data related to students’ experiences and involvements in taking the public speaking subject and its practice based on their educational background in senior high school, and to collect the students’ opinion related to this difference. The analysis resulted that natural science students in average achieve score 3.58, meanwhile social science students in average achieve score 3.51. The difference is 0.07 point or 1.4%. The average score between the students in natural science and social science can be stated as not significantly different. In addition, generally, all the students who were interviewed believed that public speaking competency is not correlated with majoring in senior high school.

Abstract

The point of this study is planned to research the ability of understudies in performing public speaking, in light of their personality: extrovert and introvert. This study utilized a qualitative approach where the scientist depicted the introvert and extrovert personalities of individual character of EFL students talking execution. The participants were 203 understudies from five classes of English. The data collection technique used was semi-structured. The data collected during this study was then examined using two different techniques: statistical counting for quantitative information about the introvert and extrovert traits of the students and analysis for qualitative information about the effectiveness of their public speaking. The findings show that on average, extrovert students’ accomplishments in talking are better than introverts, but not significant, however not huge. The thing that matters is simply 0.02 points among 0 to 5 in scoring. Students who are introverts or extroverts have different learning methods; introverts tend to study by themselves, while extroverts enjoy interacting with others and studying in groups.
