Abstract

The Effect of Anthropogenic Stresses on the Soft Substrate Macrozoobenthic Community Structure in Buyat Bay, Totok Bay and Likupang Strait (Minahasa Pennisular, North Sulawesi) Abstract The ecosystem of shallow marine waters in Minahasa Penninsular has got pressures from various development activities in the land, such as mining, agriculture and or domestic wastes. This study was aimed at analyzing the macrozoobenthos response to various levels of anthropogenic stresses, such as tailing, traditional mining and agricultural activities on the community structure of soft substrate macrozoobenthos, in Minahasa Penninsular. Sampling was carried out in April and May, 2010, at 10 sampling sites in the subtidal zone of Buyat Bay, Totok Bay and Likupang Strait. In this study, the community variables, such as species abundance and diversity using species diversity index of Shannon-Wiener (H’), richness index (SR), eveness index (J’), dominance index of Berger-Parker (d), ‘K-dominance’ curve, were measured. Macrobenthos assemblage was analysed using multivariate analysis, both for classification analysis and factorial correspondence analysis. The study recorded a total of 543 individuals of 114 species (taxa). The soft substrate macrozoobenthic community structure and assemblage in Minahasa Penninsular were determined by the substrate condition and the level of anthropogenic stresses, especially sedimentation from either tailing or traditional mining activities. Both macrozoobenthos community structure and assemblage in shallow waters of Likupang Strait were in natural condition dominated by sensitive species, but those in Totok Bay, near Ratatotok downstream, were in bad condition (early succession) dominated by opportunistic species. Based on the characteristics of macrozoobenthic community structure and assemblage, it was found that the benthic ecosystem of Buyat Bay has not reached the final phase of succession (ecosystem equilibrium), except the shallow waters near Buyat river mouth. Abstract

This study aims to determine the type and community structure of zooplankton in the Tongkaina seagrass aquatic ecosystem. Sampling was carried out at 3 location points using plankton nets. Plankton net was drawn along 50 meters from the sea towards the beach. There are 14 genera of zooplankton in the morning and 17 genera in the afternoon. The total density of zooplankton in the morning was 0.064 individual/l , and in the afternoon 0.114 individual/l. The highest density of zooplankton in the morning is Limacina and in the afternoon, Calanus. The zooplankton Diversity Index (H ') in the morning is 2.5907 and in the afternoon is 2.7321, indicating that the diversity level is less diverse. Morning uniformity (e) zooplankton index was 0.5614 and in the afternoon 0.5267, showed that the distribution pattern of zooplankton was moderate. The zooplankton dominance (C) index in the morning was 0.0783 and in the afternoon 0.0720. This shows that there is no dominant genus. Water conditions fall into the good category due to the temperature, salinity, and pH that are quite stable and are still within the limits of feasibility for zooplankton life.    Keywords: Zooplankton, Community Structure, Seagrass, Tongkaina Waters. Abstract

The present paper describes the soft-bottom macrozoobenthic community structure inhabiting Lembeh Island’s waters (North Sulawesi). Material for the study was collected from 5 stations in October 2013 using a La Motte grab (600 cm2) and subsequently sieved through a 1 mm square mesh sieve. A total of 1147 individuals belonging to 78 species (taxa) of macrozoobenthos  and representative of higher taxonomic groups belonging to 12 phyla were recorded and identified. Univariate analysis showed low abundance of individuals and number of species in the Pintu Kota station which has a black sludge of sediment but Shannon index values at this station is the highest. Instead Motto station relatively far from anthropogenic disturbance showed a high abundance of individuals and number of species but Shannon  index values at this station is the lowest. The station is dominated by Tanais sp at a density of 9533 individuals m-2. Shannon index is less sensitive to measure the effect of anthropogenic disturbances compared with the abundance of individuals and number of species. The multivariate analysis (Cluster Analysis and Correspondence Analysis) managed to separate the three groups (essemblage) makrozoobethos: Group A (Posokan), Group B (Motto) and Group C (Pancoran, Mawali and Pintu Kota). Abiotic factors such as granulometri, physicochemical, hydrodynamics and anthropogenic factors believed to be the factors controlling the formation of the ecological group. Keywords: macrozoobenthos, anthropogenic impact, multivariate analysis, Lembeh Island.
