Abstract

Wood preservation is one way to enhance the durability of wood, especially for low grade natural durable woods. The aim of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of tuba (Derris elliptica)leaves extract against the subterranean termite, Coptotermes sp. The leaves was milled and extracted with ethanol solvent to give it’s extracts. There were two kinds of antitermite test which were conducted in this study, namely direct test (stomach toxic test) and indirect test (respiratory toxic test). The mortality of termites and the weight loss of the paper discs were used to determine antitermite activity of the extract. The result showed that the higher concentration of the extract, the higher mortality of termites for both of the test. The concentration of the extract were 2, 4, and 6% with the mortality 40.0, 69.1 and 93.3%, respectively for direct test and 71.5, 75.8 and 89.7%, respectively for indirect test. Moreover, the weight losses of paper discs of direct test were 5.29, 3.07 and 1.94%, respectively.Keywords: Derris elliptica, natural antitermite, preservative, tuba leaves ekstract

Abstract

Guidance for community groups around the Unhas Education Forest needs to be carried out to encourage increased public awareness about the importance of preserving the forest without losing its benefits of the forest. Furthermore, the community can use the number of visits, both individually and in groups, to the Unhas educational forest for various purposes as a market opportunity to increase income. One of the commodities cultivated by the local community is the oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus). Overall, this community service activity is carried out through a series of activities, including lectures, focus group discussions, training and demonstrations, and workshops. This activity is expected to make the community feel the benefits of the forest and play an active role in conserving the forest. In addition, it can improve the welfare of the people living around the forest. The activity results showed that after participating in the training, 75 per cent of the participants were able to explain the stages of mushroom cultivation.

Abstract

This community service program aims to increase the added value of palm sugar and pepper commodities in Lombo Village, Pitu Riase District, Sidenreng Rappang Regency, through social innovation downstreaming based on a sustainability approach. The activities were designed using the participatory rural appraisal method involving two partner farmer groups, the village government, and students. Interventions were implemented through socialization, hygienic production training, product diversification (palm sugar powder, liquid palm sugar, cube palm sugar, and pepper powder), assistance in adopting appropriate technologies (sap evaporator, dryer machine, grinder, and packaging machine), micro-enterprise management training, and digital marketing. Evaluation was carried out using pre–post tests, field observations, and semi-structured interviews to measure improvements in knowledge, skills, and business behavior. The results indicate increased community enthusiasm and participation, improved adoption of production technologies leading to higher process efficiency and product quality consistency. In addition, the program encouraged the formulation of a sustainability plan for farmer group institutions in managing village businesses based on local commodities.
