Gelam (Melaleuca cajuputi) dominantly found on tidal swamp areas of Central Kalimantan. The study was conducted to investigate the quality of charcoal from stem section based on the grow place, the location of A (flooded of the big tidal, peat thickness is 51-100 cm), location B (unflooded of the big tidal, peat thickness is 101-200 cm), and the stages of tree growth (saplings, poles, and trees). The parameters observed were yield, moisture content, volatile matter content, ash content, carbon content in bound, and calorific value. Charcoal from gelam generally meets the requirement of SNI 01-1683-1989, SNI 06-4369-1996, and Malaysia standards. The average value of the charcoal yield is 28.090-28.545%, the charcoal water content is 4.605-5.413%, the volatile matter content of charcoal is 30.286-34.635%, the ash content of charcoal is 1.840-2.386%, the bonded carbon content of charcoal is 58.37-62.46%, and the charcoal calorific value is 6937.43-7530.09 cal g-1.Key words: biomass energy, calorific value, charcoal, Melaleuca cajuputi

The heartwood of ebony displayed series of axial and alternating black and paler streaks. Accordingly, ebony from Central Sulawesi was classified in two different streaks patterns i.e. SL (spider web) and batang macis (matches stick). We investigated the chemical properties (holocellulose, cellulose, lignin, extractive content, ash and pH value) of sapwood, intermediate, and heartwood from the different streaks patterns of ebony wood. The mean value of holocellulose, cellulose, lignin, ethanol-toluena extractive, hot water extractive, ash contents, and pH value were 76.59±3.02%, 50.62±4.86%, 26.72±3.05%, 9.71± 2.97%, 13.54±1.43%, 0.97±0.32%, 5.56±0.39, respectively. On the basis of t-test, holocellulose, cellulose, and hotwater soluble contents were differed significantly between the two streaks patterns. Analysis of variance showed the radial direction also affected significantly on the chemical contents. The contents of the holocellulose, cellulose, lignin, extractive ethanol-toluen and ash were significantly differed among sapwood, intermediate and heartwood. The heartwood showed higher levels of cellulose, lignin, ethanol-toluena extractive and ash contents than those of other parts. On the contrary, the lowest levels of cellulose, lignin, and ash contents and pH value were found in the intermediate wood region.Keywords: chemical properties, Diospyros celebica, radial direction, spider web, streaks pattern

Antitermite activities of leaf hexane extract of cat whiskers (Orthosiphon sp.) leaves, ethyl acetate, and ethanol- toluene extracts of pepaya (Carica sp.) leaves were investigated in several concentrations (1, 5, 10, and 15%, weight based) that be impregnated to filter papers againts the dry-wood termites Cryptotermes sp. After impregnation, filter papers were dried into oven at 60 °C for 3 hours, then were tested to termites for 4 weeks. The results showed that treatment concentration could obtain the highest termites mortality level, no weight loss and the lowest damage level. Ethyl acetate extract of papaya leaves exhibited the highest termites mortality (91.2%) at concentration of 10%. This concentration also showed the lowest weight loss (0%) and the highest antifeedant activity (antifeedant coefficient of 100%). Ethyl acetate extract of papaya leaves exhibited the lowest of LC50 value (7844.20 μg ml-1 ). Antitermitic activity showed a trend more repellent than toxic. Fatty acid such as hexadecanoic acid, linolenic acid, octadecanoic acid and steroid compounds that detected by GC-MS were estimated to play a role as antitermite agents. Thus, the application of ethyl acetate extract of papaya leaves at concentration of 10% was recommended to the next experiment by using solid wood impregnation.

Gelam wood commonly use for house pole in peatswamp land of Central Kalimantan. However increasing the utilization of gelam wood lead to harvest a small diameter of trees.
