Abstract

This work aims to study the removal of lead (II) from aqueous solutions with Ca-Alginate (CA)  and Coffee-Calcium-Alginate (CCA). The coffee biomass were successfully prepared as the material to be encapsulated in calcium alginate. The characterization of the synthesized CA and CCA was performed using fourier transform infrared and scanning electron microscopy. The method used was batch study. Various factors which affected adsorption efficiency of lead (II) ions by CA and CCA, such as pH, agitation time, and adsorbent dose were investigated for determination of optimum experimental conditions. The result showed that CA and CCA had significant effects on adsorption of lead (ІІ) ions at pH = 4, agitation time of more than 120 min, and the adsorbent dose was 0.05 gram. Moreover, the Langmuir isotherm model showed that maximum adsorption capacity (qm) was 163.66 mg/g and 176.99 mg/g respectively for CA and CCA. The Langmuir isotherm was better described the adsorption equilibrium. Both of the adsorbent fitted to pseudo second order equations. These results demonstrated that CA and CCA show great potential to remove Pb(ІІ) ions from aqueous solutions.

Abstract

Carbohydrate protein, fat, and minerals are the main ingredients of seaweed besides water. These main contents can vary depending on environmental conditions and the type of seaweed. Gracilaria sp, Sargassum sp, and Ulva lactuca grow widely and have been used on Sayang Heulang beach, South Garut, West Java, Indonesia. Unfortunately, no information was found for its main content that can indicate the seaweed quality. This research aims to conduct a proximate analysis of the three seaweeds, representing brown seaweed, red seaweed, and green seaweed, respectively. Carbohydrate total analysis was done using Luff Schoorl method and gave 11.2 %w/w, 25.3 %w/w, and 20.4 %w/w for Gracilaria sp, Sargassum sp, and U. lactuca, respectively. Determination of total protein using the Kjeldahl-Nessler method gives 6.5 %w/w for Gracilaria sp, 7.8 %w/w for Sargassum sp, and 8.7 %w/w for U. lactuca. The methods for fat analysis are Soxhlet extraction, which gives 0.3 %w/w for Gracilaria sp, 1.6 %w/w for Sargassum sp, and 1.1 %w/w for U.lactuca. The study also showed Gracilaria sp, Sargassum sp, and U. lactuca contain 26.9 %w/w, 23.6 %w/w, and 32.5 %w/w mineral content, respectively. These results indicate that different types of seaweed provide different chemical compositions.

Abstract

Lead ion is one of the environment’s main pollutants. Lead ions have carcinogenic and toxic effects and, therefore dangerous to the human body.  This research was conducted to determine the ability of alginate extraction residue from Sargassum sp.’s ability as lead ion adsorbent. The characterization of this adsorbent was done using FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) and SEM-EDS (Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy). The optimization of this adsorbent was carried out toward some parameters, such as pH, adsorbent’s mass, Pb(II)’s initial concentration, and contact time. The result showed that the optimum condition can be reached if the contact between the adsorbent and adsorbate was done using 0,025 grams of adsorbent in 25 ml of pH 5 Pb(II) (200 ppm) solution, using 5 minutes contact time.  The adsorption process follows the Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum capacity of 416,6667 mg.g-1. The result of the kinetics study showed that the adsorption follows a pseudo-second-order kinetics whilst the thermodynamics study showed that the adsorption process is exothermic with the value of ΔHᵒ = -4,51 kJ.mol-1,  and the value of ΔSᵒ = -0,038  kJ.mol-1.K-1.
