Abstract

This cross sectional study aimed to determine oral health-related quality of life in pregnant women. A total of 100 pregnant women seen at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia participated in this study. The short version of the Malaysian Oral Health Impact Profile (S-OHIP(M)) questionnaire with five-point ordinal scale that ranges from ‘never’ to ‘very often’ was used to assess the frequency of oral impacts during the previous 12 months. The majority of the respondents were Malay (96.0%), with a mean age of 29.9 years (SD 5.78). The highest education level attained by most respondents was post-secondary qualification or Diploma (39.0%). Some had formal tertiary education (27.0%). The majority of them were income earners (74.0%) and contributed to the household income. Half of the respondents were in their third trimester of pregnancy while the remaining half was either in the first or second trimester. The severity of impact experienced by the women, which is the mean S-OHIP(M) score was high at 10.43 (95% CI = 8.96, 11.90). The prevalence of impact, which is the percentage of respondents reporting ‘fairly often’ or ‘very often’ to one or more impacts, was 36.0%. Common impacts experienced by the respondents include feeling uncomfortable because food got stuck in between teeth or dentures (22.0%), feeling that oral health problems had caused bad breath (13.0%), and feeling shy because of problems with teeth, mouth or dentures (9.0%). The results also demonstrated that neither the severity nor the prevalence of impact was influenced by the women’s socio-demographic background. This study concluded that pregnant women suffered from high impact of oral diseases that could affect their quality of life

Abstract

Dentistry is a highly stressful program; stress is associated with xerostomia and periodontal disease. Objective: This study aims to investigate the association of perceived stress, severity of xerostomia, and periodontal status in dental students. Methods: This was a two-phase cross-sectional study of 245 Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) undergraduate dental students. Phase 1 involved administration of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and Summated Xerostomia Inventory (SXI). In phase 2, the Community Periodontal Index (CPI) was performed on 150 students to determine their periodontal status. Results: Mean PSS-10 and SXI scores were 19.6 (SD 5.47) and 7.9 (SD 2.04), respectively. Only 7.3% students had healthy periodontium while 17.3% had gingival bleeding, 65.3% had calculus, 6.7% had shallow pockets, and 3.3% had deep pockets. The association of perceived stress, severity of xerostomia, and periodontal status was not significant. Nevertheless, a significant positive correlation was found between PSS-10 and SXI scores (r = 0.318, p < 0.01). Conclusion: Most USM dental students were affected by some degree of periodontal disease, but it was not associated with perceived stress or severity of xerostomia. Students with higher perceived stress had more severe xerostomia. Information from this study could be utilised by the dental school in planning towards providing a stress-free training environment.

Abstract

Objective: This research compared the effectiveness of the Active Skeletonized Sutural Distractor (ASSD) and the face mask (FM) in treating adolescent Class III malocclusion and assessed the stability of the mini screw utilized in the ASSD appliance. Methods: A total of 68 adolescents with Class III malocclusion were divided into either one of two treatment groups (ASSD or FM) for a maximum period of six months of therapy. Lateral cephalometric radiographs and impressions were taken for comparative purposes. The 3M® intra-oral elastic (USA) was attached to the mini-implant, and the mini-screw mobility was evaluated monthly using a force gauge (Correx®, Orthocare, UK). Changes in craniofacial morphology were compared using dependent and independent t-tests, respectively. The significance threshold was set at 0.05. Results: A total of 54 participants were included due to a drop-out. Statistically significant improvements were found in soft tissues and dentoskeletal parameters following treatment with both ASSD and FM. However, participants treated with ASSD showed significantly greater changes compared to FM. Except for inter premolar and inter molar width in the FM group, and intermolar width and palatal width in the ASSD group, neither appliance had a significant influence on palate and dental arch parameters after treatment. The percentage of mini-screw stability was 61.53%. Most participants (73.07%) in the ASSD group achieved corrections over 6 months. Conclusion: The ASSD has the potential to treat Class III malocclusion with better outcomes than the conventional FM and may replace the necessity for surgery.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and validate a Malay language questionnaire to assess mothers' knowledge in providing breast milk for premature infants, and barriers to breast milk expression while the infants are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Two tertiary hospitals in Kelantan, Malaysia participated in this cross-sectional study. Relevant items of knowledge and barriers were identified through a literature search, clinical observations, and expert opinion. Ten breastfeeding experts validated the content of the knowledge and barriers to breast milk expression questionnaire. The effectiveness of the questionnaires was tested for face validity among ten mothers, followed by reliability tests comprising 50 mothers who gave birth prematurely. The 20 knowledge items and 16 barrier items have an Item-level Content Validity Index (I-CVI) of 0.99, indicating good relevance of the knowledge and barrier items. The knowledge and barrier questionnaires had Item-level Face Validity Indexes (I-FVIs) of 1.00 and 0.99, respectively, suggesting clear and comprehensible items. The questionnaires obtained a Cronbach alpha score of 0.726 for knowledge and 0.736 for barriers, showing that they are reliable tools for assessing knowledge and breast milk expression barriers. The validity and reliability of the newly developed Malay version of the questionnaire have been established for evaluating breastfeeding knowledge and barriers to expressing breast milk among mothers with premature infants.
