Abstract

Although the use of instructional aids in Physical Education has been widely discussed, studies that specifically evaluate the effectiveness of traditional, local-wisdom–based instructional aids in enhancing elementary students’ participation and motor skills remain limited, particularly in Barru Regency. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of traditional instructional aids in Physical Education learning at SDN 144 Barru Regency, conducted from November to December 2025. A mixed-methods approach with a descriptive evaluative design was employed, involving 42 participants comprising 2 Physical Education teachers and 40 fourth- and fifth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, interviews, and motor skills tests; quantitative data were analyzed using paired-samples t-tests, while qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ motor skills after the use of traditional instructional aids (t = 5.87; p < 0.001) and an increase in the mean participation score from 68.45 to 82.30, with a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). In addition, questionnaire results indicated a 21% increase in learning motivation compared to pre-intervention levels. Qualitative findings reinforced the quantitative results, revealing greater enthusiasm, active engagement, and improved collaboration among students during instruction. The study concludes that traditional instructional aids are effective in improving the quality of Physical Education learning and implies that schools and teachers should optimize local-wisdom–based innovations as a contextual, economical, and sustainable instructional strategy.

Abstract

Although the use of instructional media in physical education has received increasing attention in prior studies, research specifically examining the challenges of utilizing traditional teaching aids in elementary school physical education remains limited, particularly in rural settings. This study aims to analyze the problems encountered in the use of traditional teaching aids in physical education learning at SDN 49 Kabupaten Barru. A qualitative case study approach was employed involving 12 participants, comprising one physical education teacher and eleven students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that limited equipment availability (mean adequacy score = 2.1/5), lack of teacher training (reported in 78% of responses), and minimal institutional support significantly hinder the optimal implementation of traditional teaching aids. Observation results show that only 40% of planned traditional media activities were implemented effectively. Although student engagement during the use of traditional media reached 65%, it declined when equipment was incomplete. Thematic analysis identified four dominant challenges: infrastructure constraints, pedagogical limitations, low budget allocation, and shifting student preferences toward modern games. These results contribute to the theoretical development of culturally responsive pedagogy in physical education by demonstrating how contextual resource limitations shape instructional practice and student engagement. The study concludes that teacher competence and institutional support play a crucial role in optimizing the use of traditional teaching aids in rural elementary schools and recommends structured teacher training and adequate resource allocation to strengthen their implementation. Future research should experimentally test traditional media-based physical education models in broader and more diverse school contexts to further validate these findings.

Abstract

Physical Education has strong pedagogical potential to develop character through direct experiences of complying with rules, competing, cooperating, making rapid decisions, and confronting social consequences. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of traditional game-based Physical Education instruction that explicitly integrates moral values, including honesty, trustworthiness, justice, self-control, respect, and ta‘āwun, in improving sportsmanship and cooperation among students in the Primary School Teacher Education Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar. The study employs a mixed-methods approach with a quasi-experimental design involving an intervention group and a comparison group, as well as pretest–posttest measurements. Data were collected through measurements of sportsmanship and cooperation, behavioral observations, and students’ written reflections. Moral values were operationalized through game rules, role rotation, conflict-resolution mechanisms, post-activity reflection, and behavioral assessment. Quantitative data were analyzed to examine changes in sportsmanship and cooperation, whereas qualitative data were analyzed thematically to explain how students interpreted competitive dilemmas and pedagogical responsibilities. Because the results presented in the manuscript are still based on simulated data, empirical conclusions regarding the effectiveness of the intervention cannot yet be established, and all such results must be replaced with field data. Conceptually, this study offers a character education framework that connects normative values with embodied learning practices in Physical Education for prospective primary school teachers.

Abstract

Inclusive physical education requires pre-service primary teachers to adapt instructional tasks, communicate learning expectations, ensure safety, and sustain meaningful participation among learners with diverse abilities. This study aims to examine whether physical literacy and practicum experience predict inclusive physical education teaching self-efficacy among pre-service primary teachers at Universitas Negeri Makassar, Indonesia. The proposed study employs a cross-sectional explanatory design involving approximately 160–220 students in the Primary School Teacher Education program who have completed foundational physical education coursework. Physical literacy will be measured using an adapted instrument for university students, while inclusive teaching self-efficacy will be assessed across six dimensions: planning, instructional adaptation, communication, assessment, safety, and collaboration. Practicum experience will be operationalized according to verified practicum hours and the quality of interactions with learners in school settings. Hierarchical regression analysis will estimate the unique contributions of physical literacy and practicum experience after controlling for semester, prior disability-related coursework, and personal physical activity. As data collection has not yet been completed, the draft does not report empirical findings; any numerical results incorporated for structural demonstration are simulated and must be replaced with field data before submission. Conceptually, the study positions inclusive teaching self-efficacy as an outcome of both embodied competence and authentic teaching exposure. Its findings are expected to inform the design of primary teacher education programs that prepare generalist teachers to deliver safe, adaptive, and participatory physical education in increasingly diverse classrooms.
