Developing Speaking Skill through Oral Report in an EFL Class in Indonesia Marzuki, Abdul Gafur

Abstract

This Classroom Action Research aims at developing students’ speaking skill through the application of oral report technique. This research is conducted collaboratively in three cycles in which researcher acts as a lecturer while his collaborator acts as an observer and each cycle consists of two meetings. Data of this research is attained from two main sources namely qualitative and quantitative data. The data shows that In preliminary study, 35.5% students could answer questions given by researcher through interview but the achievement score shows that 13.3% students could fulfill the minimum criteria of achievement. The minimum criterion of achievement is 60. At cycle I, 37% students could participate in oral report and 24.4% students could fulfill the minimum criteria of achievement. At cycle II, 51.1% students could participate in oral report and 42.2% students could fulfill the minimum criteria of achievement. The last is 75% students could fulfill the minimum criteria of achievement from 86.6% students who participated in oral report at cycle III from 45 students. Furthermore, the highest score obtained by student from each of cycles present that in preliminary study is 70 whereas 72.5 at cycle I, 85 at cycle II, and 90 at cycle III. Based on the findings of this research, it can be inferred that the application of oral report technique can develop students’ speaking skill in using English

Abstract

This research aims at finding the influence of Contextual Teaching and Learning toward the students’ learning achievement. The subject of the study was 25 eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 9 Palu. The research was conducted in two cycles through the steps of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The researcher collected the data by using observation sheets, field notes, questionnaire, portfolio, and test. The data were analyzed quantitative and qualitatively. The result of achievement test showed that in cycle 1 there were only 17 students (68%) who got score greater than 65, whereas in cycle 2 there were 21 students (84%) who got score greater than 65. The action was stopped after the third meeting in cycle 2, because the result of students’ learning achievement had met the criteria of success. Based on the result of data analysis, the application of Contextual Teaching and Learning was effective to develop the reading skill.

Abstract

This classroom action research was conducted to Develop reading skill by implementing guided reading of the second semester students of Islamic Education Department FTIK IAIN Palu. This research employed action research design consisted of one cycle and seven meetings. Six meetings were held to conduct the teaching-learning process by implementing the Guided reading technique, and one meeting was held to evaluate the students’ individual achievement. The researche’s role is to help the students’ to find out the determining the main idea, find the specific information, locate the reference (people and thing) and find out implicit information in the text. Based on the result of observation sheet on students activities it was 28 (93.34%) out of 30 students who got scores over 70, students could get the score above the standard score namely70. It means that the main criterion; the students’ achievement in this research already meets. It indicated that the implementation of the Guided Reading in teaching reading skill to the students was effective.

Abstract

The research aims at Developing Speaking Skill of the Third Semester Students of TBI FTIK IAIN Palu through Tablemate Interview. The subject of the research was the third semester consisted of 24 students of TBI FTIK IAIN Palu. The research was classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles where each cycle consisted of planning, implementation, observation and reflection. The data of this research were obtained from the results of the test and observation sheet, field notes, during the implementation of the action. The findings of the research showed that Tablemate Interview was effective in developing students’ speaking skill. The effectiveness of Tablemate Interview was shown by the improvement of students’ score. The findings revealed that in cycle 1 there were thirteen students who achieved minimum criteria of achievement. It means that the classical achievement was 54.16%. In cycle 2, it found that there were twenty four or all students who achieved the minimum criteria of achievement. It means that the gained achievement was 100%. Gained achievement is based on the number of students who got the score at least the criteria of success (65). Both of the gained and individual achievements have met the criteria of success. It can be concluded that the Tablemate Interview was effective to develop the students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to improve the EFL learners’ English vocabulary mastery through the application of mind mapping technique. The study employed the Classroom Action Research Design. The subject of this study was 49 undergraduate EFL learners at the Islamic Education Department FTIK IAIN Palu in 2016/2017 academic year. The data were collected through three research instruments: 1) vocabulary test, 2) observation sheet, and 3) field notes. This research was conducted in two cycles and each cycle was done in four meetings including the post cycle vocabulary test. The result of study shows that using Mind Mapping technique can improve the EFL learners’ vocabulary mastery. This is proved by the improvement of the EFL learners’ vocabulary test score results. In the first cycle, the average of the learners’ who fulfill the criteria of success is 55.1% which means that only 27 learners from 49 samples can pass the minimum standard score. In the second cycle, the result of the test is proved to increase into 85.7% which means that 42 of 49 learners have been successful to fulfill the criteria of success. Based on the result of the data analysis, it can be concluded that the EFL learners’ vocabulary mastery has been improved through the application of Mind Mapping Technique in the teaching of English.

Abstract

This research aims at analysing the development of students? speaking skill in Islamic higher education in Indonesia through repetition technique. This is a CAR (Classroom Action Research) implemented in cyclical process, covering planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subject of research was the fourth semester students of EFL speaking class which consist of 25 students. The data were obtained from observation checklist, field notes, questionnaire, and test. They were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. Quantitative data dealt with teaching-learning process, i.e. students? participation in the classroom activities. They were gained from students? achievement tests. The findings revealed that in cycle 1 there were twelve students who achieved minimum criteria of achievement. It means that the classical achievement was 48%. In cycle 2, it showed that there were twenty of students who achieved the minimum criteria of achievement. It means that the classical achievement was 80%. Both classical and individual achievements have met the criteria of success. It can be concluded that the repetition technique is proved to be useful to develop students? speaking skill.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing the implementation of pictures technique in increasing vocabulary of the fourth gradepupils of SDN 6 Palu. This research employed a collaborativeclassroom action research design and was implemented in the formof cycles consisting of four major steps: planning, implementing,observing and reflecting. The subject of the research were 34 pupilsof grade four B at SDN 6 Palu. The instruments used to collect datawere test, observation checklists, field notes, and questionnaire. Thisresearch was completed in two cycles because the results of theresearch in the first cycle did not meet the criteria of success. Eachof cycle comprises four meetings. The findings of the researchshowed that the applying of technique in teaching English canincrease pupils` vocabulary mastery. This is shown by theimprovement of the mean score made by the pupils, that is: 7.04 incycle I to 8.10 in Cycle II and the number of the pupils who gotscores at least 6.5 or greater was 22 (64.71%) in cycle I to 34(100%) in cycle II. In addition, the pupils gave positive responsetoward the model applied as reflected from the results of threevariables of measurement of the questionnaire given: learningmotivation, learning result, and tasks accomplishment. It can beconcluded that the pictures technique is effective and applicable inteaching vocabulary.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to reveal on how the intended meaning of any figurative expressions delivered through the lyrics and also symbolic signs and gestures which delivered on a popular video clip of Taylor Swift “Look What You Made Me Do” in order to figure out its implication toward language learning as one of the most-watched music videos on YouTube. The data of this study were the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s song “Look What You Made Me Do” and the official video clip on YouTube uploaded by VIVO on August 27th, 2017. Both the lyrics and the symbolic cues shown on the video clip were analyzed through Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis by categorizing any kinds of figurative expressions delivered to reveal the intended meaning of the song and interpret its symbolic expressions through semiotic study as research method. Thus the context is intervening the writing of the song. The results showed that there are many repetitions found to emphasize the message delivered which can be considered as something that viewed as highly really matter for the author or the singer of the song then based on the symbolic or semiotic analysis, most of the clues delivered are trying to express the singers’ transformation regarding to her new reputation as a more powerful and tough person from her past image as an innocent sweet girl. The clues are delivered through the symbols in the forms of animals such as snakes and raven which belief as the symbols of transformation.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The research aims at utilizing cooperative learning in teaching reading skill for Islamic college students. The research was classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles where each cycle consisted of planning, implementation, observation and reflection. The subject were taken from PAI 5 which contained 30 students. The data of this research were obtained from the test, observation checklist, and field notes. The findings of research showed that cooperative learning was effective in developing students’ reading skill. The findings revealed that there were nineteen students who achieved the minimum criteria of achievement in cycle 1, which percentage was 63.3%. In cycle 2, it was found that there were twenty five students who achieved the minimum criteria of achievement, which percentage increased to 83.3%. Both of the classical and individual achievements have met the criteria of success. Besides, students were active in joining classroom activities and completing their classroom tasks. Therefore, it can be concluded that the cooperative learning was effective to develop the students’ reading skill. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memanfaatkan pembelajaran kooperatif dalam pembelajaran keterampilan membaca mahasiswa di perguruan tinggi Islam. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas yang dilakukan dalam dua siklus dimana setiap siklus terdiri dari perencanaan, pelaksanaan, observasi dan refleksi. Subjek penelitian diambil dari kelas PAI 5 yang terdiri dari 30 mahasiswa. Data penelitian ini diperoleh dari hasil tes, lembar observasi, dan catatan lapangan. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran kooperatif efektif dalam mengembangkan keterampilan membaca mahasiswa. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa ada sembilan belas mahasiswa yang mencapai kriteria pencapaian minimal pada siklus 1, dengan persentase 63,3%. Pada siklus 2, ditemukan bahwa ada dua puluh lima mahasiswa yang mencapai kriteria pencapaian minimum dengan persentase 83,3%. Persentase klasik dan individual telah memenuhi kriteria keberhasilan. Selain itu, mahasiswa aktif mengikuti kegiatan kelas dan menyelesaikan tugas kelas mereka. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pembelajaran kooperatif efektif untuk mengembangkan keterampilan membaca mahasiswa. How to Cite: Marzuki, A., G. (2016). Abstract

The objective of this study is to know the effectiveness of recorded English dialogues in developing the students understanding of English word stress for Islamic Education students. The study employed the classroom action research design. The subject of this study was undergraduate EFL students at the Islamic Education Department in 2018/2019 academic year. The data were collected through four research instruments: observation checklist, questionnaire, field notes, and test. The result of study shows that teaching English word stress through the utilizing recorded English dialogue performed by the researcher is effective to develop students understanding of English word stress. The primary criteria to judge that the students have development are that from the score they gained from two phases of test. In the first test, the students’ development reached 56.25%. Meanwhile, in the second test, students’ development attained 81.25%. Since learning achievement is calculated based on the number of students who get the target score, so it can be stated that the learning achievement has been attained.
