Abstract

This study concerned on finding out the messages carried by both verbal and nonverbal signs in Kuta five star hotel advertisements. The data were taken from internet. The data were collected by observation method. The collected data were analyzed by qualitative method using theory of semiotics from Saussure (cited in Chandler 2001), the theory of meaning by from Barthes (1967), and theory color term from Cerrato (2012). The message is presented in formal and informal way. Our findings show first, the verbal signs that appear have connotative and denotative meanings can provide meaningful messages to the reader. Second, the visual signs that appear show several images and colors that have various meanings according to the context behind the advertisement.

Abstract

Translating economic terms is a challenging task since the translator needs to understand economics and be able to convey the concepts to the target language. In translating economic books for lay readers, the translator also needs to consider the lexical choice so that the target readers can understand the translation easily. This study aims to analyze the translation procedures applied in the translation of economic terms in the book The Psychology of Money written by Morgan Housel and to find out whether the translation is oriented to the source language or the target language. The data in this study were analyzed qualitatively by using the taxonomy of translation procedures by Vinay and Darbelnet. The results showed that there were seven translation procedures applied in the translation of economic terms: borrowing, calque, literal translation, a combination of borrowing and literal translation, transposition, equivalence, and combination of transposition and borrowing. The literal translation is the most dominant translation procedure applied to translate economic terms. Based on the analysis of the translation procedures, it can be concluded that the translation of economic terms in this study is oriented to the source language.

Abstract

The study concerns with the slang word in song lyrics. The aims of the study are focused on analyzing the types of slang proposed by the theory of Chapman (2007) and the effect of slang words by the theory by Eble (1996). The method of the research used descriptive qualitative method. The data got from song lyrics by Ariana Grande, the song titles were 34 + 35, Positions, Thank U, Next, and Side to Side. Data were obtained from the data collection through listening to the songs, reading the song, printing the song, underlining words containing the type and effect of slang words, and noting the data. The researcher found 21 (78%) data types of primary slang and 6 (22%) data types of secondary slang. The effects of slang words there are 21 (78%) slang words identified as expressing informality and 6 (12%) slang words identified as identifying group members and no slang found to apposed establishing authority.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of shift in the translation of the book “The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down” by Haemin Sunim. The qualitative method was employed in this study. The data was collected through document analysis. Following the data collection procedure, the data were categorized and analyzed using the theories proposed by Catford (1965) and Machali (2009). The result shows that there are six types of shifts found in the translation of the book. They are level shift, structure shift, class shift, unit shift, intra-system shift, and meaning shift. Unit shift was the most prevalent translation shift, followed by class shift. There are cases of obligatory shifts due to different linguistic systems of the source language and the target language. In such contexts, the shifts are necessary to achieve accuracy and acceptability in the target language. In addition, there are also optional shifts due to the translator’s preference or different cultural backgrounds. It is applied to increase the readability in the target language.

Abstract

Language is the most important thing used daily by humans to communicate directly or indirectly. Quite a lot of research that discusses language and one of them is onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia is an object or action based on sound imitation associated with the object or action. It can be divided into four types; Mechanical Onomatopoeia, Fast Motion Onomatopoeia, Musical Onomatopoeia, and Fighting Onomatopoeia. The article entitled “An Analysis Types Onomatopoeia Word in Batman & Spiderman Comic”, aims to identify the types of onomatopoeia words found in Batman & Spiderman Comic. To analyze the data, the main theory used in this article is the onomatopoeia theory proposed by Elizabeth (2013). This study uses a Descriptive qualitative method to present descriptive and qualitative data to support the data contained in Batman & Spiderman. The results of this study indicate the types of onomatopoeia which include Mechanical, Fast Motion, Musical, and Fighting Onomatopoeia. Of the 29 data found in Batman & Spiderman Comic, the onomatopoeia type of Fighting mostly occurred with 18 data, followed by mechanical onomatopoeia with 3 data, musical with 6 data, and fast motion with 2 data. Abstract

Politeness is the primary notion in this study. The objective was to find the types of politeness maxim and its scale applied by the character in Emma 2020 movie. The analysis was conducted based on the theories proposed by Leech (1983) who formulated the six types of politeness maxim. Leech (1983:123) also proposed the three scales of politeness and two scales based on the theory by Brown and Gilman (1960). The data were taken from the British romance movie entitled Emma 2020. The qualitative method was used for analyzing the data. The analysis found six types of politeness maxim and five types of politeness scale applied by the movie characters with the types of 13 approbation maxim and 24 cost-benefit scales was extremely appear. In addition, there are two types of politeness maxim compete by the same character found in this analysis, and the goals of conversation affected the politeness maxim application.

Abstract

Every advertised product or service has a meaning contained in it, such as a verbal or visual sign that is inserted. This study wants to explain and explain the verbal meaning and visual signs contained in Valentine's Day Edition chocolate advertisements. The analysis process used by the researcher is a detailed observation method using a qualitative descriptive method. The supporting theory was put forward by Saussure (1983:65) to describe verbal and visual signs, Barthes (1967) to explain the meaning of verbal and visual signs and Wierzbicka (1996) to explain the colors used in Valentine's Day Edition chocolate advertisements. In analyzing this, there were 9 verbal and 15 visual signs from 3 Valentine’s Day Edition chocolate advertisements and 6 connotative and 14 denotative meaning that were found by the researcher. This indicates that the company wants to make the advertised product known to the public with different concepts and ideas by using attractive verbal and visual signs.

Abstract

The aim of this research is analysed intimate style that used by the characters in The Incredibles movie and the social factors that influencing the characters to use intimate style would be analysis also. The researcher did this research use descriptive qualitative method and also using observation method to collect the data. The researcher used theory from Martin Joos and Holmes. The result of this research presented descriptively. This research found 15 intimate language style in the movie those are addressee with 3 data, extraction with 4  data, jargon with 2 data, close friend relationship with 2 data, and family relationship with 5 data and also found the social factors that influencing the characters to use intimate style such as participant, topic, setting and function.  The participants of this movie have very close relationship such as family relationship because the topic of the movie is about family superheroes. The conversation in the movie also mostly occurs in informal situation. The utterances that produce by the characters have various function. But mostly, the characters produce the utterances to show their intimacy and closeness each other.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts to describe the cohesive devices used in the Maxx Brides Magazine. The data of this study were taken from the articles found in the Maxx Brides Magazine on March Edition 2017. The data was collected by observation method. The analysis of the data was conducted by descriptive qualitative method. There are at least two factors that influence the text, those are cohesion and coherence. Cohesion provides the relation of meaning that exists within the text. Meanwhile, coherence is semantic property of discourse which is formed by interpretation of each relative sentence to other sentences .the coherent text is meaningful, unified and gives the impression. The qualitative analysis was applied in analyzing the sample texts. The finding showed that the demonstrative reference was the type most frequently used grammatical cohesion and synonym were the most frequently used lexical cohesion in the articles. Abstract

An advertisement is a form of communication used to persuade an audience (viewers, readers, or listeners) to take some action concerning the product, the ideas, or the service. This study focuses on a single advertisement; The Canggu weekly advertisement Strongly conveys promotion Using verbal and nonverbal signs. The study Determined to find out the verbal and nonverbal signs in used in the advertisement and their meaning. The study uses a qualitative descriptive method and two theories in analysing the data. The first was the theory of Semiotic by Saussure (1893), and the theory of meaning by Barthes (1977). The findings show that the signs in this advertisement typically have a literal or denotative meaning in explaining the product. The same thing in the nonverbal signs the dominant meaning used was denotative meaning. It is because the literal meaning is making the reader easier to catch the message delivered by a print advertisement or an online advertisement.
