Abstract

This study was intended to find out how principals of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri (MIN) in remote regions in South Sumatra dealt with obstacles of shortage of permanent teachers and lack of infrastructure. This study was a qualitative interpretivist study. Semi-structure interviews and observations were implemented to collect the data. Four MIN principals in remote regions in two districts in South Sumatra were interviewed. The results showed that to overcome the shortage of permanent teachers, the principals took the non-permanent teachers to be in charge as homeroom teachers and placed teachers available to teach subjects that were not suitable with their education background. To overcome the lack of infrastructure, the principals used available rooms in the school for other purposes needed, used the classes in turn, and limited the number of students enrolled in the school.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to investigate whether there is a correlation between Self-Confidence with EFL students’ speaking achievement. The participants of this study were the Undergraduate EFL Students of UIN Raden Fatah Palembang. purpose. The participants that were chosen can meet certain criteria from this study. In this study, the student’s self-confidence and their speaking achievement are correlated. Therefore, in order to know the students’ speaking achievement, a group of students who had already taken the informal speaking courses from the population were considered as the sample. Nonetheless, most of the third semester students have already finished the informal speaking class on last semester and they are on the next level of speaking class on this semester. Quantitative method was used in this study. The data gained from self-confidence questionnaire and the list of students’ speaking achievement was analyzed by using SPSS. The result of the study showed that there is no significant correlation and there is no significance influence between self-confidence of the undergraduate EFL students with their speaking achievement. The researchers of this study recommends other researchers to make sure the respondents are in well condition such as feeling comfortable while taking the data. Furthermore, it is recommended that other researchers to do and to extend more variables in order to reveal any aspects that can support and enhance the quality of researches in speaking skill.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out investigate what EFL teachers do to developing their pedagogical competence in teaching implementation. The participants of this study were English teachers in SMP Xaverius 3 Palembang. Qualitative method was used in this study. The data gained from interview was analyzed by using thematic analysis. The study applied purposive sampling. The result of the study showed that the English teachers join some activities and programs as the efforts of developing their pedagogical competence. To increase the knowledge of classroom management, teachers usually did induction programs. Teachers also should join many kind of seminars, workshops, short courses or teacher trainings related to teaching in order to develop their knowledge of teaching methods. Teachers can develop their knowledge of classroom assessment by joining seminars, workshop, reading books or articles, watching youtube, and using other platforms. Lesson study activities are used by teachers to help them making lesson plan.

Abstract

The research had two objectives; 1) to explore teachers’ belief about the use of full English during learning activities, and 2) to determine the factors that affected the use of full English in teaching English to teach English to young learners. Embedded mixed method was used in this study. The quantitative data were gained by distributing 1 set of closed-response questionnaire item to 38 teachers of English who teach English at elementary schools in Palembang, a capital city of South Sumatera Province, Indonesia. Meanwhile, the qualitative data were gained from one-to-one in depth interview to 15 teachers of English who were willing to be interviewed. Students’ responses to each questionnaire item were analyzed by using descriptive statistics analysis by Employing SPSS program. Meanwhile, the qualitative data gained from the interview were analyzed by using thematic analysis. It was revealed from the study that first, teachers shared positive belief about the use of full English while teaching English in the class. Secondly, there are five factors that affected the use of full English during learning activities; 1) The English Proficiency of the teachers; 2) School Policy; 3) The homogeneous level of students’ language performance 4) Teacher’s classroom management skills and 5) Students’ attitude toward English.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate teachers’ and students’ awareness on elementary schools students’ English handbook in terms of the students’ need and interest. It was a survey research involving 5 teachers of English and also 120 fifth grade students at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri II Palembang. A likert scale questionnaire was distributed as the instrument which was validated and tried out to determine the rigor of the instrument. The data was analyzed by using descriptive analysis. The finding revealed that dealing with elementary schools students English handbook, the teachers tended to disagree that that it was designed based on childrens’ need and interest at the aspect of teaching material, but they agreed that the English handbook fulfilled students’ need and interest in terms of teaching and learning process. Then, students tended to agree that their English handbook fulfil their need and interest. Teachers tended to agree that they need to do some adaptation when using the handbook. Dealing with expectation, teachers tended to strongly disagree that there should be both evaluation and improvement given by the government related to the use of the elementary schools students’ English handbook. In contrast, children tended to agree that government should evaluate and improve the use of elementary schools students English handbook.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis persepsi guru dan peserta didik terhadap pembelajaran berbasis e-learning madrasah pada mata pelajaran Sejarah Kebudayaan Islam. Jenis penelitian ini adalah jenis penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di MTs Negeri 1 Palembang. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan wawancara dan dokumentasi. Setelah data dikumpulkan kemudian di analisis menggunakan teknik analisis data Miles dan Huberman yang meliputi reduksi data, penyajian data, dan verifikasi data. Persepsi guru SKI dan peserta didik terhadap penerapan pembelajaran berbasis e-learning madrasah menunjukan persepsi positif dan adapun yang negatif. Ditinjau dari komponen persepsi kognitif guru SKI dan peserta didik memberikan persepsi positif serta telah mengetahui pembelajaran berbasis E-learning madrasah. Ditinjau dari komponen persepsi konatif guru SKI dan peserta didik memberikan persepsi positif dari persiapan apa saja yang diperlukan hingga aktivitas apa saja yang dilaksanakan pada pembelajaran berbasis e-learning madrasah. Ditinjau dari komponen persepsi afektif terdapat 2 orang guru SKI dan 3 orang peserta didik memberikan persepsi positif dan 3 orang guru SKI dan 5 orang peserta didik memberikan persepsi negatif. Selain itu, persepsi guru SKI dan peserta didik terhadap kebermanfaatan pembelajaran berbasis e-learning madrasah menunjukan bahwa persepsi positif dan adapun yang negatif. Ditinjau dari komponen persepsi kognitif guru SKI dan peserta didik memberikan persepsi positif serta telah mengetahui bagaimana manfaat pembelajaran berbasis e-learning madrasah. Ditinjau dari komponen persepsi konatif guru SKI dan peserta didik memberikan persepsi positif dari tindakan apa yang dimanfaatkan pada fitur di e-learning madrasah hingga aktivitas-aktivitas apa saja yang dilaksanakan pada pembelajaran berbasis e-learning madrasah. Ditinjau dari komponen persepsi afektif terdapat 2 orang guru SKI dan 3 orang peserta didik memberikan persepsi positif dan 3 orang guru SKI dan 5 orang peserta didik memberikan persepsi negatif.

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of finding out whether there is significant improvement on students’ reading comprehension achievement before and after being taught by using THIEVES strategy and there is significant differences on students’ reading comprehension achievement who are taught by using THIEVES strategy and those who are not. This research was conducted for 12 meetings and quasi-experimental research design was used to conduct the research. The population in this study were all seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Panang Enim. In selecting the sample the writer used purposive sampling technique and in this study the total sample was 62 which included the experimental class and controll class. To analyze the data the writer used paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test via SPSS 25. Based on the result of paired sample t-test, the p-output was 0.000 with df=30 (2.042), and t-output was 6.291. Since the p-output was lower than 0.05 and t-output was higher than t-table (2.042) therefore it can be concluded that there was significant improvement from students’ pre-test to post-test scores in experimental class taught by using THIEVES Strategy. And based on the result of independent sample t-test, the p-output was 0.002 with df=60 (1.671), and t-output was 3.212. Since the p-output was lower than 0.05 and the t-output was higher than t-table (1.671) therefore it can be concluded that that there was significant difference on students’ reading comprehension achievement who are taught by using THIEVES strategy and those who are not at SMPN 1 Panang Enim.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the description of the students’ speaking anxiety and to find out the factors that influence the students’ speaking anxiety. The researcher used a mixed method to obtain the data. For a quantitative sample, the researcher involved 80 students in the eighth grade of SMP Lematang Lestari. In collecting the data, the researcher used the PSCAS questionnaire instrument from Yaikhong and Usaha (2012) to obtain quantitative data and interviews to obtain qualitative data. From the results of the questionnaire, the anxiety level category was determined to be 3 categories, namely high (7.5%), medium (65%), and low (27.5%) anxiety level. The researcher used a homogeneous sampling approach to take samples. After that, for a qualitative sample, six students who had a high level of speaking anxiety were selected to be interviewed to find out the factors that influence students’ speaking anxiety. To analyze quantitative data, the researcher used descriptive statistics and to analyze qualitative data the researcher used thematic analysis. In conclusion, the results of the study show that the description of students’ speaking anxiety at SMP Lematang Lestari Muara Enim is mostly at a medium level of anxiety, namely 65%. Furthermore, after identifying the results of the interviews, from the things that were felt by the students, the researcher then drew 3 themes that became factors that influenced the eighth-grade students’ speaking anxiety at SMP Lematang Lestari Muara Enim, namely communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation.
