Abstract

Malay and Arabic have a relationship that influences the emergence of literary works including poetry. Syair Gulong is one of the many Malay literary works that have a relationship with Arabic. This relationship is inseparable from the circle of Islamic religiosity in both languages. This study aims to reveal the relations between the two languages in Syair Gulong. The form of the relation referred to in this study is the emergence of absorption words with various forms and phonological changes in syair gulung. This research concludes that the uptake words in syair gulong have a relationship between Arabic and Malay in the form of word uptake, solid uptake, and translation uptake. However, this language relation cannot be separated from the appearance of absorption words that undergo phonological changes.

Abstract

Language is the most effective communication device and has huge influence for its speaker behavior. The way of thinking, understanding, and radicalism cannot be separated from language. Therefore, this article provides several terms related to radicalism, i.e. irhab ‘terorist’ and ‘jihad’. The terms are analyzed using relevant Arabic linguistic theories. It is the theory of semantic development (ath-thawwur ad-dalaly) that constitutes a part of semantics, one of the linguistics disciplines. This article also discusses the definition of both words irhab and jihad based on linguistics. The definition is also viewed from its periodic language history: pre-Islamic and present. Semantic development in the jahili age can be seen from jahili poem related to the use of the two words. As result, the meanings of these two words have been changing from time to time.

Abstract

Language characteristic of law is independent, unemotional, and plain in order to avoid ambiguity. Al-Quran with the perfection and miracle of its language make it different from other law sources. This writing addresses the language style of Quranic verses discussing law: the duty to do jihad for the sake of Allah. The verses will be identified using Badi’ study byelaborating not only their beautiful meaning (al-muhassināt alma’nawiyah) but their beautiful lafadz (al-muhassināt al-lafdziyah) as well. There are nine muhassināt found in this study. These beauties include meaning (al-muhassināt alma’nawiyah) and lafadz (al-muhassinat al-lafdziyah). Al-Muhassināt al-Ma’nawiyah found in these verses consists of four kinds: Tibaq, Tauriyah, Jam and Taqsim, while al- Muhassināt al-Lafdziyah includes two softs of beauties, they are Jinas and Radd al-A’jz ala al-Sadr. These findings prove that the verses do not address jihad emotionally but discuss it beautifully and calmly. Keywords: Ilmu badī’, al-muhassināt al-ma’nawiyah, al-muhassināt al-lafdziyah, verses law.

Abstract

From its inception, hijrah in Islamic tradition referred to the Prophet Muhammad’s geographical migration from a perilous environment to a place of peace. Over time, however, hijrah has evolved to encompass broader notions of transformation, including shifts in lifestyle, adoption of Islamic attire, and changes in social relationships. These developments illustrate that hijrah is a fluid and multifaceted concept. It explores how these activists experience and manage hijrah in terms of acceptance and supervision. Key questions addressed include: How do campus da’wah activists construct and sustain their identity through hijrah in the context of modernity? What role does the state play in shaping religious life? The article argues that hijrah represents not only a journey of self-improvement but also a subtle form of resistance to state influence in regulating religious practices, particularly as communities navigate the negative aspects of modernity. The interplay between hijrah, the state, and modernity is characterized by selective engagement, prioritizing lifestyle changes over ideological shifts. Using Peter L. Berger’s social construction framework—encompassing externalization, objectification, and internalization—the article concludes that the spirit of hijrah within this framework significantly shapes perspectives on the state’s role in religious affairs. Keywords: Hijrah; identity, state role, Islamic thought, modernity.
