Abstract

This study attempts to see the implementation of communicative language teaching and to investigate factors hindering high school teachers from implementing it. Data were collected using online questionnaire and interview. This questionnaire was administered to 29 senior high school teachers. The findings show that most teachers understand the concept of CLT well. However, there are some obstacles that they need to deal with in implementing CLT the classroom. Teachers experience limited access to the target language’s culture, limited time to develop materials for CLT and lack of training in order to improve their teaching skill. Given its importance, more research is still needed to see how this CLT method can be improved in Indonesia teaching context in the future.

Abstract

Bilingual education has become very popular among Indonesian children nowadays. Other than learning it from school, they are also exposed to the second language in their homes. Although some misconceptions persist in society, some parents continue to do so because they believe that bilingualism benefits their children's development, whether in the language or cognitive areas. This paper focuses on the common misconceptions spreading among parents. This research was specifically done based on literature review. Here, the five common myths about bilingualism on early childhood were answered based on scientific explanations given by experts. The finding indicates that being bilingual helps children have strong language development and executive functioning at the same time. Results are interpreted in the context of relevant research and explained based on the theories of some experts.

Abstract

Pengabdian ini merupakan kegiatan tim dosen Universitas Putra Indonesia “YPTK” Padang untuk memberikan wawasan kepada siswa SMA dan mahasiswa tentang bagaimana Bahasa Inggris dapat memberikan banyak manfaat baik untuk kehidupan akademik maupun karir di masa depan. Tema yang diangkat pada kegiatan ini adalah “How English Changes Your Life”yang dilakukan secara daring. Kegiatan ini dilakukan sebagai upaya untuk meningkatkan kesadaran dan minat anak muda terhadap Bahasa Inggris serta dapat melihatnya bukan sekedar bahasa melainkan alat komunikasi yang dapat membukakan banyak jalan kedepannya. Pengabdian dilakukan dengan metode webinardimana tim pengabdian memaparkan penjelasan mengenai keuntungan apa saja yang bisa didapatkan oleh siswa dan mahasiswa yang bisa memaksimalkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggrisnya. Selanjutnya, tim pengabdian juga melibatkan beberapa orang mahasiswa untuk dijadikan sebagai panitia acara. Selanjutnya, peserta seminar diizinkan untuk mengajukan pertanyaan terkait materi yang telah disampaikan sehingga terjadi diskusi yang lebih mendalam mengenai materi. Kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat membangun pengetahuan masyarakat sasaran, dalam hal ini siswa SMA dan juga mahasiswa untuk dapat memaksimalkan pembelajaran dan penguasaan Bahasa Inggris dengan lebih baik lagi kedepannya.

Abstract

Nowadays, Indonesian kids are increasingly interested in bilingual education. They are exposed to the second language in their households in addition to acquiring it in school. Although there are still some myths about bilingualism in society, some parents still practice it because they think it helps their children develop, both linguistically and cognitively. Those, this essay focuses on the materials used by parents and teachers to teach bilinguals to the children including in the formal language learning. The literature review specifically served as the foundation for this paper. Here, seven frameworks about the learning materials are analysed to see whether the current materials are suitable for the students need. The results show that the learning materials still need some improvement and teachers need to do some innovation to make it happen the school level.
