Abstract

This study examined the influence of learning motivation, vocabulary mastery, self-confidence, and classroom interaction on students' English-speaking ability. A quantitative correlational design was employed. The population comprised junior and senior high school students in Indonesia during the 2025/2026 academic year, from which 96 students were selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires measuring learning motivation, self-confidence, and classroom interaction, a vocabulary mastery test, and a speaking performance assessment. Before analysis, all instruments underwent validity and reliability testing. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression in IBM SPSS Statistics after the assumptions of normality, linearity, multicollinearity, and homoscedasticity had been assessed. The results showed that learning motivation, vocabulary mastery, self-confidence, and classroom interaction each had a positive and statistically significant influence on students' English-speaking ability. Collectively, the four independent variables significantly explained students' speaking performance, with the regression model accounting for 73.5% of the variance in English-speaking ability. Vocabulary mastery was the strongest predictor, followed by classroom interaction, learning motivation, and self-confidence. These findings indicate that improving students' speaking competence requires an integrated instructional approach that promotes vocabulary development, strengthens learning motivation and self-confidence, and facilitates meaningful classroom interaction. The study offers practical implications for English teachers seeking to design more effective communicative language-learning environments.

Abstract

This quantitative study investigates the effectiveness of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based instructional design training program in strengthening the digital competence of elementary school teachers in Indonesia’s frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped (3T) regions. Education quality and access in 3T regions remain constrained by geographical isolation, limited infrastructure, and uneven professional development opportunities for teachers. Building on the European Digital Competence Framework for Educators (DigCompEdu) and its six areas of educator digital competence, the study designed a structured training program that introduced teachers to generative AI tools for lesson planning, resource development, and assessment. A one-group pretest–posttest design was implemented with 120 elementary school teachers from several 3T districts. Data were collected using a Likert-scale digital competence questionnaire adapted from DigCompEdu and analyzed with descriptive statistics and paired-sample t-tests. Findings show statistically significant improvements in teachers’ overall digital competence scores across all six DigCompEdu areas, with the largest gains in “Teaching and learning” and “Facilitating learners’ digital competence.” The results indicate that contextually grounded AI-based instructional design training can be an effective strategy to narrow digital competence gaps between teachers in peripheral and non-peripheral regions. Implications for policy, teacher professional development, and further research on AI-supported pedagogy in disadvantaged contexts are discussed.

Abstract

Background. Stunting is a major public health problem in Indonesia, especially in Central Java, where socioeconomic gaps and limited maternal health education persist. Low nutritional knowledge among pregnant women and caregivers delays early prevention, affecting child growth. Community participation is increasingly viewed as a key strategy to strengthen health literacy. Purpose. To evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based participatory approach in improving maternal knowledge, feeding practices, and early caregiving behaviors related to stunting prevention. Method. A mixed-methods design was used, combining surveys and focus group discussions with 65 pregnant women and caregivers in three Central Java districts. The intervention involved collaborative health education led by midwives, health workers, and local women leaders. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively and with paired t-tests; qualitative data were thematically coded. Results. Maternal health knowledge increased significantly (p < .001), and complementary feeding practices improved in line with national guidelines. Participants also reported higher confidence in monitoring growth and understanding nutrition. Qualitative data showed that collective learning strengthened social support for early stunting prevention. Conclusion. Participatory education builds community ownership, supports behavioral change, and improves the sustainability of maternal and child health programs. Scaling this model may contribute to national efforts to reduce stunting and enhance child well-being.
