Abstract

AbstractBecause of its cryptic nature apocalypse Daniel 7 has been interpreted in many ways. Often it is linked to the end of time teachings. This kind of interpretation is problematic. First, while emphasizing the dark side of the prophecy, it fails to capture its main intention which is optimism toward the future. Second, apocalypse contains dualistic ideas, but, they are not supposed to be separated, let alone taking one side over the other. Apocalyptic dualism should be treated as an oscillating, always negotiating positions, tensional but creativecollisions. This article shows a reading of apocalypse that reveals dualism as an integrated entity. It also considers theological consequences of such a reading. While being placed within the world’s history, God is deeply involved in worldly drama which consists of tragedy, as well as, comedy. On the political side, this reading demonstrates that imperial history does not run by itself, but, always prones to subversive movements.

Abstract

Anthropocentrism has received many challenges since the publication of the famous article by Lynn White, Jr. in 1967. Yet, since then there has been no significant changes with regard to human attitude towards nature. Human beings still perceive nature as their tool whose existence is to serve their own interests. When the COVID-19 pandemic hits the world, the anthropocentrism is once again challenged. It should be a good opportunity to change the anthropocentrism. The novel corona virus has made people look powerless. It is just a tiny thing, but it has caused a great impact on human life. Despite the fact that the virus often outsmarts human beings, there is no sign that human beings want to admit their weakness. Through reading some biblical stories: the creation of human beings, the naming of animals, Job and the lamb in the Book of Revelation this article wants to deconstruct the view that sees human beings as superior to others in nature. This reading will use posthumanism as theory. It will allow us to see in the stories that human can be subjugated to animals.

Abstract

This research was motivated by concerns about the problem of modern slavery. The author will interpret Exodus 20:8-11 on the Sabbath to respond to the issue of slavery. The method of interpretation that will be used is deconstruction and social criticism. The use of the social criticism method sees the text as a practice of discourse that is ideologically charged and has specific interests. The text is not neutral but rather is advocating. In the text itself, two social groups conflict with each other. The interpretation of the existing Sabbath is interpreted normatively, legalistically, ritualistically, sociologically, theologically and eschatologically. The results of reinterpreting the Sabbath using a deconstructive method show that the Sabbath has been abolished because every day is interpreted as a forced workday. Forced labour is driven by fear and worry. The Sabbath was forgotten for political and economic motives. The Sabbath was abolished because time was money, so people were traded and enslaved for the sake of making money. The reinterpretation of the Sabbath text with the method of social criticism finds the theological meaning of the Sabbath. The God of the Sabbath is described as the forerunner of the liberation of slavery throughout the ages. God’s Sabbath-keeping people today have a liberation mission to help people who are victims of modern slavery.

Abstract

This article discusses how inter-religious studies is conducted in Indonesia. A case in point is Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies (ICRS). As one of the founders, Duta Wacana Christian University (UKDW), has its own contributions for ICRS. The Faculty of Theology that plays the actual role as UKDW’s representation in ICRS has made ICRS a continuation of its existence as theological education. In this article, I will describe the link between theology and inter-religious studies as far as the Faculty of Theology UKDW is concerned. Rather than hindering the progress of inter-religious studies as some might worry, theology is in fact can be a significant part of inter-religious studies.

Abstract

As a prophetic narrative, Gog and Magog oracle has a strong influence over many Islamic sects and groups. The analysis and interpretation of God’s message within this oracle is a necessity to understand the social, cultural and literary influence of the narrative on religious and non-religious communities. By applying the socio-rhetorical interpretation (intertexture texture), readers can gain more awareness the prophetic discourse which is a part of Allah message to humanity. The main focus of the analysis is the inner texture.

Abstract

This article discusses the figure of Vashti, the banished queen in the book of Esther for her refusal to appear at a party hosted by King Ahasueros for his quests. Vashti is a marginal figure in the book and often misjudged as liberal, vain, and wicked. Yet, the writer argues that Vashty can be an inspiration for women and minority groups. Feminist view of Vashti, the writer argues, has opened the possibility to revise the negative view of Vashti. Traditional view, that exalts Esther, actually perpetuates patriarchal system. Instead of Esther, Vashti is more suitable to be a role-model because she dared to challenge the patriarchal system. She can also be a model for minorities for her courage to defend her integrity. Vashti’s example can inspire minorities to stand up for their identity and defend their integrity against unfair threats from the majority. This, for sure, requires enough courage to take risk. Nevertheless, this is not really an option because people who do not have courage to defend their integrity has lost their humanity.

Abstract

Abstract. By not explicitly prohibiting slavery has created the impression that the Bible does accept slavery. This paper intended to examine the biblical texts that raise the idea of slavery. Its main focus was texts in the Old Testament. These texts would be examined by considering the ancient Middle Eastern cultural setting. This paper would also bring together the pro and anti-slavery texts in a tensional relationship. This way distinguishes this writing from other writings which tend to take only one position, either pro or anti-slavery. The idea of seeing texts in a tensional relationship implies a postmodern thinking. The benefit of this paper is to build awareness that slavery is a practice that needs to be opposed but at the same time difficult to abolish. Therefore, a struggle against slavery still needs to be launched even though slavery has been formally and legally abolished.

Abstract

Abstract. Natural restoration poses a current theological challenge. Readings that support adaptation, mitigation and recovery efforts are the purpose of writing articles to respond to these challenges. The method used in reading the selected text, namely Genesis 26:12-33, is eco hermeneutic as proposed by Norman Charles Habel. The results showed that Gerar water was compassionate toward Isaac, his family and animals as refugee in the Philistines during that time of famine. However, water stopped serving Isaac because Isaac became unfriendly to him by exploiting him when he was starving. From there Isaac was aware of Water's sovereignty in his encounter with the wells of Sitnah, Esek and Rehoboth. At the same time, Isaac realized that God as the source of Water defends Water in an effort to maintain its intrinsic value for all people fairly.

Abstract

Abstract. As a theological reflection on the church, ecclesiology cannot escape the reality of the complexity of the church. In order to understand the complexity of the church properly, as this study does, ecclesiology needs to be based on a living religion, namely religion as practiced by the people. To understand living religion, this study will use theories and research results from the sociology of religion. Furthermore, this study will use theological-phenomenological thinking to understand how God manifests Himself as the other. As a given, God cannot be equated with anything that already exists. Therefore, theology needs to be open to new possibilities. Such a theology is in harmony with ecclesiology which is based on the life of the people. Life must move and the movement involves various parties.

Abstract

Cases of spirit possession quite often provoke controversy. One of the controversies is about what or who possesses a possessed person. In the context of Sumba, there is a difference of views between the church and the Marapu religion. The church sees the possessed as evil spirits or satans, while the Marapu religion views it as the spirit of the ancestors. This paper raises that issue from the results of a field study. The research was conducted at the Sumba Christian Church (GKS) of the Wee Rame Congregation which is in the midst of the Wewewa tribe. The method used was a qualitative method with a questionnaire distribution technique to 45 respondents. Dealing with these differences of views, this paper will trace how the Bible describes demons and ancestors. The purpose of the search was to open the door to dialogue between the church and indigenous religions. The dialogue itself is expected to improve the handling of spirit possession cases in the future.AbstrakKasus-kasus kesurupan cukup sering menimbulkan kontroversi.
