Abstract

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to explore scientific knowledge in the process of making Kasongan pottery and its potential in improving the lateral thinking skills of junior high school students through the integration of local crafts in physics learning. Methodology: This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation. Purposive sampling technique with 38 craftsmen. Data analysis using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. Main Findings: Scientific knowledge in the process of making pottery includes concepts of physics, chemistry, and biology. This process can improve students' lateral thinking skills through the application of practical problems and solutions. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study introduces the integration of local crafts, especially Kasongan pottery, in physics education to improve lateral thinking skills. This approach connects scientific concepts with traditional practices, offering a new method in learning and preserving culture.

Abstract

The tendency of conventional textbooks with prosocial behavior themes, which mostly contain text or unattractive visual designs, makes reading activities less appealing to children. Illustrated storybooks with creative and locally relevant settings tend to attract students, especially 5-6-year-olds. This study aims to develop a storybook that fosters prosocial behavior in children. Conducted at Fitrah Semesta Kindergarten using the R&D method with the ADDIE model (up to the development stage), the study produced a 10-page storybook. Data analysis employed qualitative and quantitative techniques. The results show that the illustrated storybook received "highly feasible" ratings from material, language, and media experts. Material aspects scored 85.5%, language 89.2%, and media 84.2%, with an average expert rating of 86.3%. Observational responses scored 86.36% (highly feasible), and the pre-test to post-test improvement was 40.36%. This indicates the storybook significantly enhances prosocial behavior and is highly suitable for 5-6-year-olds.

Abstract

International teaching practicums help pre-service teachers (PSTs) advance professionally in teaching and gain multicultural competence. This study aims at describing an investigation of challenges and problems faced by the pre-service teachers during their international teaching program in an Indonesian elementary school and how to cope with them revealed by the PSTs' voices. This qualitative case study started with conducting a survey questionnaire covering various aspects of results, challenges, and problems regarding the aspects of pedagogical, content knowledge, technology, and cultural gaps faced by 7 international pre-service teachers (PSTs) from the Netherlands. The survey results were then further examined through in-depth interviews with the PSTs and thematic analysis was conducted to examine the data. The findings showed that there were three categories of problems faced by the PSTs: issues from the students, problems from the PSTs, and problems from the schools or stakeholders. The PSTs could adapt to the situation and find solutions to the problems. They tried to be "Indonesians," enjoyed every activity and difference, and communicated to the right person to solve the problems. The study also revealed that the PSTs hoped that the lecturers could have spent more time at school and given them more advice. They wished the university could improve the scheduling system and give them a chance to teach in more than one school to be able to experience different school cultures. This study recommends further investigation of how a good international teaching program should be developed and managed. Keywords: pre-service teachers, international teaching practicum, teaching English to young learners

Abstract

Globalisation brings a great impact on the use of English in any domains like business, education, IT and the like. English has become lingua franca one chooses to communicate with others having a different language. English has spread worldwide and this phenomenon has resulted in English teaching learning in primary level in many non- English-speaking countries. This brings a consequence to a crucial need in teachers' education. Teachers at the primary level need to develop both competence in English use and teaching skills to young learners regarding their special characteristics. Theories in  children development is needed by teachers to meet the special needs of children. One method suggested to meet those needs through songs" Songs help children to internalize some words and sentences in the new language. Songs also provide a link with their everyday lives and be fun. Songs can be used at any level of ages at any stage in a lesson. In the beginning of a lesson songs can be used to mark the change from one topic to another. Songs can be a break from another more concetrate activity in the middle of a lesson and used to round a lesson of the end.

Abstract

Education curriculum in Indonesia changed from the revised 2013 Curriculum to the Merdeka Curriculum. It requires the strategic, methods, teaching materials, learning model, media and method used by teachers. One of the teaching materials is an electronic module. The research aimed to explore information from the perspective of teachers and students regarding the electronic science module in the Merdeka Curriculum. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative and quantitative descriptive. The data collection technique was carried out by interviewing three science teachers, and an open questionnaire of students from three schools in Yogyakarta by 115 students. The research results according to the teacher's and student’s perspective on electronic science module in the Merdeka Curriculum. Teachers are very interested in using electronic modules to help science learning. Students prefer to study with electronic module because they can be accessed via laptops or smartphones and can add teaching materials other than textbooks to the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum. Electronic module can be used as an alternative solution to support students’ understanding of science material. The results can be used for further research to develop electronic module that are following the characteristics of students and supported by facilities to access it
