Abstract

This study aims to study maternal mental health’s association to stunting in children under five years old in Indonesia, which is related to mothers, children, and households’ characteristics based on the age group of children under five years old. This study uses longitudinal data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) in 2007 and 2014 with the Logistic Regression method. Maternal mental health was measured using the CESD-10 instrument. The results showed that in the children’s age group of 0-59 months and 24-59 months, an increase in the total CESD-10 score was associated with stunting in children after being controlled by all the characteristics. At age 0-23 months, the increase in the total score of CESD-10 was not associated with stunting. Maternal height, breastfeeding duration, child age, birth weight, and residence location were associated with stunting in all age groups. Maternal education and expenditure quintiles were associated with stunting in the 0-59 months and 24-59 months age groups. Meanwhile, two variables only relate to the incidence of stunting in one age group of children under five, namely maternal age (0-59 months of children under five) and sanitary conditions (24-59 months of children under five).

Abstract

This article examines the role of education in the likelihood of being never married among older adults in Indonesia. Following the Multiple Equilibrium Framework, our paper argues that increasing education imposes a more common trend of singlehood since marriage continues to be a near universal norm in Indonesia. Previous research found that increase in education delays marriage, but few studies have paid attention to the role of education in the decision to stay single. We use Indonesia National Socio-Economic Survey or SUSENAS 2007 and 2017 - two datasets with ten years span - to see whether there has been a change in the effect of education on the probability of permanent singlehood among women and men aged 40-65. The result from the logistic regression confirms a U-shaped relationship between education and singleness propensity. Our key finding is that an additional year of schooling reduces the probability of being single up until senior secondary level, while having education beyond high school increases the probability of being single. Our result implies that traditional norm towards gender role remains strong in Indonesia. We also find that both highly educated women and men have similar likelihood to stay single in this setting.

Abstract

Background: Antenatal care, delivery by skilled birth attendants postnatal care and completed immunization help improve maternal and child health. Objective: This study investigates the association between pregnancy intention and utilization of mother and child health care. Method: The study used The Indonesian Demographic Health Survey 2012. Four regression models were used to identify the association between pregnancy intention and continuum of care for mothers and their children. Results: More than one-fifth (25.5%) of the respondents received the five types of maternal and child health care. Fifteen percent of women reported that their last pregnancy was undesirable. Pregnancy intention was significantly associated with receiving adequate antenatal care (OR: 0.53, 95% CI, 0.46-0.60), utilization of antenatal care and delivery by skilled birth attendants (OR: 0.62, 95% CI, 0.55-0.71), utilization of antenatal care, skilled birth attendance and postnatal care (OR: 0.82, 95% CI, 0.72-0.93), but not for utilization of antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, postnatal care and completed immunization (OR: 1.06, 95% CI, 0.91-1.22) after controlling for socio-demographic variables and obstetric factors. Conclusion: Interventions are needed to reduce unintended pregnancies such as improving access to family planning services.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the association of Indonesian’s government public health intervention in reducing the stunting prevalence. The intervention was started in 2018 in 100 districts and expanded in stages to cover 260 districts by 2020. This study adopts fixed effectmethod on regional-level 2018-2020 panel data on stunting prevalence, aggregate public health outcomes targeted under the intervention, and other regional characteristics. District’s stunting prevalence is used as a measure of the policy’s outcome while dummy of priority districts is used to measure priority effect from the interventions. The result indicates that both priority and non-priority districts experienced a declining stunting prevalence, but the reduction of prevalence in priority districts was 7.271% higher than the reduction that occurred in non-priority districts.

Abstract

Abstract

As technology alters the way organizations work, the need for labor adjustment which more adaptable to technological changes has risen in high digital intensive sectors. However, vocational graduates face difficulties regarding this situation as their vocational school failed to equip them with advanced technological skills. Based on signaling and human capital investment theory, this problem can be solved by increasing education and training. Using 2015 and 2018 Sakernas data and logit regression, the result shows that vocational engineering and technology graduates have the highest probability to work in HDI sectors. however, working in a HDI sector cannot be associated with a better type or a more decent job than other sectors. This refers to the second finding that shows graduates of engineering and technology vocational schools have a lower probability of working as a white-collar even working at HDI sectors. According to the last finding, vocational tertiary education has shown to increase the probability of working as white-collar in HDI sectors, therefore a level up in education is needed to increase wages and improve job positions. Abstract

The fourth Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopts a lifelong learning approach to education and introduces vocational and tertiary education into the global agenda. While Vocational Education and Training (VET) was almost absent in previous international development frameworks, the agenda 2030 and its SDGs highlight greater importance to it. Consequently, many governments in developing countries promote vocational secondary education to improve labor market outcomes. This study aimed to determine the development of return on investment for Vocational High Schools (SMK) and Senior High Schools (SMA) in 2020. The data used the August 2020 National Labor Force Survey (SAKERNAS) data with Two-Step Heckman and the Mincer Revenue Function. As a result, in 2020, the return on investment in vocational education was 16.82% higher than the rate of return on investment in high school education. However, observed by the age group, the results show that SMK only provides an initial wage advantage for men, which then declines with age. Although male SMK graduates experienced poorer results, female SMK graduates did not experience the same decline.

Abstract

Indonesia has a statutory paid maternity leave, however it remains restricted to the employer’s liability and has not yet been integrated into the social security system within the labour sector. Prior research suggests that the availability of maternity leave remains restricted, which raises the likelihood of experiencing reduced income during leave and missing out on potential employment chances upon return. The main objective of paid maternity leave is not just to safeguard the women’s needs, but also to improve the welfare of children and families, resulting in favorable economic benefit. This article advocates for the need of transitioning the prevailing perspective on maternity leave, wherein it is seen as the responsibility of the employer, to a social insurance programme that falls within the scope of employment social insurance. Implementing such a programme would guarantee that women have the ability to take time off and get financial support throughout their leave, in order to preserve their well-being, as well as that of their children and families. Additionally, it would provide reassurance for a smooth transition back to work following the completion of maternity leave.

Abstract

Background: This study aims to investigate how a husband's participation in housework impacts women's fertility intentions. While previous studies have explored individual determinants, the role of a husband's participation in housework remains under-examined in the context of Indonesia. Objective: The primary aim of this study is to empirically analyze the relationship between a husband's participation in housework and fertility intentions in Indonesia. Method: The study uses data from Susenas 2022 and applies ordinal logit analysis. The hypothesis is that a higher level of a husband's participation in housework positively correlates with greater fertility intentions among women. Results: The analysis reveals that women whose husbands participate in housework are more likely to have higher fertility intentions compared to those whose husbands do not participate. Other significant factors influencing fertility intentions include parity, education level, employment status, and geographic region. Conclusion: The study concludes that a husband's participation in housework is important because it influences women's fertility intentions in Indonesia. Promoting gender equality in domestic responsibilities may encourage higher fertility intentions. These findings are important for policymakers aiming to enhance gender equality and address fertility issues in Indonesia.
