Abstract

The article was aimed to find out the empirical evidence of the effectiveness of Word Jigsaw Strategy on Students’ Vocabulary achievement of Descriptive Text. Word jigsaw is part of graphic organizer which is one of alternative strategy to teach vocabulary. The study was quasi experimental research. The population was eight grade students of SMP PGRI 1 Ciputat. Moreover, the sample of this study consisted of 25 students from VIII-3 class in the Experimental Group and 25 students from VIII-4 in the controlled group. In this study, the experimental class was taught by using Word Jigsaw as strategy in teaching Vocabulary, while controlled class was taught without Word Jigsaw. The research instrument was test that consisted of pre-test and post-test form. The technique used in collecting data was quantitative with t-test. The result of this study showed that the use of Word Jigsaw strategy is effective on students’ vocabulary of descriptive text. It can be seen from the result of calculation that the students’ score in experimental class was higher than controlled class. Based on the statistical calculation with the significance level 5%, it showed that to = 2.778 was higher than tt = 2.021 as the effect size that ranged in moderate level. It meant the Word Jigsaw strategy was effective on students’ vocabulary achievement of Descriptive text.

Abstract

        As University graduates must be able to speak English well. So they are ready when they are faced with the real life and work. So are the graduates of Bina Sarana Informatika University students, they have to gain the language competence especially speaking ability. The aim of the research was to know if the dialogue techniques are effective and appropriate for the university students. The result of the research showed that; 1). Most students got enormous advantages in improving students speaking skill as well as overcoming the speaking difficulties. The improvement covers grammar knowledge, intonation and pronunciation, vocabulary mastery, fluency and naturalness in speaking, and speaking attitude. 2). The students did not feel bored.  All students took part actively in the task. It means that students like doing the task. In other words, dialogue technique is one of many good techniques of teaching speaking. 3) During the semester students showed their positive responses to the implementation of the dialogue technique.  It can be concluded that the dialogue technique presented in the right way will bring about a good response from the students. In the implementation, the students are happy doing the activity and they are eager to practice speaking. Based on the research result and theoretical review, the writer suggested that dialogue technique is worth to be used for university students especially for conversation subject.

Abstract

The  research  aims  to find  out English Classroom activities and assessment based on students’ need analysis and teacher’s perception. The quantitative and qualitative method were  conducted in this research to describe the students’ needs. In collecting the data, the  researchers applied interview for teacher and  questionnaire  for  the  students  as  the instrument of the research. There were one teacher and 30 students as participants in this research by conducting purposive sampling. The findings showed that researchers can use the topic that they provide to develop materials in needs analysis for the student in language teaching. In addition, assessment activity on the topic of invitation, give instructions and ask permissian was suggested to use feedback from friends. While, making a greeting card topic was suggested to use feedback from the teacher. Hence, showing the existence of a person or thing topic was suggested to use role play.

Abstract

To have an effective learning and teaching English, it should cover four language skills such as listening, speaking reading, and writing. It is shown in practice, that the process of teaching involved some language skills i.e when teaching listening will involve speaking and reading. And when teaching speaking will include listening and reading, the same case when teaching reading will contain speaking and listening. Though the main purpose of teaching reading is to develop knowledge and get information, but speaking practice could be placed in. Through jigsaw reading technique, it is a good idea then to integrate the reading activities into speaking practice. Therefore, this technique is applied to students of Bina Sarana Informatika University. The purpose of this research is to know if teaching reading will also result speaking skill. The research was carried out from October 2023 to January 2024. This an action research that applied six (6) stages in presenting jigsaw reading. They include; 1). Preparation, 2). Expert group, 3). Presentation group, 4). Debriefing, 5). Group processing, and 6). Individual accountability. The action research employs twenty (20) students of semester 3 Bina Sarana Informatika University. The result shows that most students gained good speaking skill. This conclusion is made based on the presentation speaking test result which the grade of “the accuracy & fluency” aspect was range from good to excellent score. The number of this scores reached to 18 (90%) out of 20 students. The result showed that students who got fair score is only 2 (10%). After learning and discussing the content of the paragraph most students can answer the questions orally. The students who got good score on “Content Mastery “ is 12 students (60%), and the aspect of “answering questions” is 18 students (90%) got good scores. Since the main subject is reading, therefore the researcher also evaluated the result of the reading comprehension test. Based on the test result most students can do the test well. This is shown with the average score is 87. Therefore, it is concluded that integrating reading lesson into speaking practice through jigsaw technique is effective and applicable for students of university. The process also created togetherness among the students. Jigsaw technique also stimulated students to read intensively. By doing such activity that students speaking ability is improved
